Chereads / Rise of the Last Homunculus / Chapter 6 - The First Step

Chapter 6 - The First Step

3 months had already passed since Dyreus arrival at the orphanage. Nothing note-worthy had happened, besides the occasional sleeping and eating.

Inside the church, Dyrus sat at one end of the wall as the children stood on the other, cheering him on as he wiggled on the ground.

"Come on Dyrerus! just stand up and run!"

"That is not helpful at all! Dyreus, you just need to put one leg forward after the other!"

"You all do realize he has no idea what you're saying, right?"

As the children started to argue with each other about how to teach Dyreus to run, May walked in, almost stumbling as she looked at what was occurring.

"What in the world are you children doing right now?"

"We uh... wanted to see if Dyreus could beat Aurora's record on who started running first?"

Aurora was the name of the girl who had arrived 3 days earlier than Dyreus. While at 1 year old she could walk confidently, 1 month later she was already able to run unsupported.

"Everyone develops at a different age. Dyreus is only 3 months old, there's is hardly any way he could walk, let alone run." May said to the children as she headed over to pick up Dyreus.

When she was about halfway to him, she stood in her tracks with a shocked face.

Dyreus was pushing himself up onto his feet!

Everyone around stood in silence as they watched Dyreus struggle to get up.

While the struggling continued, May was about to resume her walk towards him, when all of the sudden, Dyreus was standing on his own two feet!

As if time seemed to freeze, everyone watched as he stood tall, waiting to see what he would do next.

As Dyreus took one last "Ermp" sound, he moved his right leg forward, balancing himself as he pushed off his left leg and moved it in front of his right.

Anticipation and excitement filled the children as they watched Dyreus continue step after step. As they were about to resume their cheering and clapping, a sudden horror drowned over them.

Dyreus had lost his balance on his last step and started to fall, his head aimed right for the edge of a stuck-out chair.

As if time resumed for May, she shot forward trying to catch Dyreus while the children looked away with horror.

BAM!

A sound had entered all the ears around as the children quickly looked to see the aftermath.

May had caught Dyreus before he hit the ground, but not before his head banged against the edge of the chair.

Blood leaked down Dyreus's head, as he let out a roaring cry. May quickly grabbed the edge of her sleeve as she applied pressure to the massive cut on his forehead to stop the bleeding and yelled at the children to grab the doctor.

May looked at Dyreus, as not only blood, but tears began to flow from his eyes as the pain raged through him.

May could only look with despair as she prayed from her soul to the gods that he would be okay.

When she looked at where the children had run off to as they got the doctor, a quick sniffle could be heard from her arms, as the crying started to die down.

Moving her head down towards Dyreus, she could only gasp as Dyreus looked at her with his bright golden eyes, curious as to why he was getting such a welcomed cuddle.

In one movement, she wiped away the remaining blood on his forehead with her sleeve, only to look in awe.

The cut was completely gone and not even a scar was left.

She had personally seen him slam his head on the edge of the chair and the massive cut that was created due to it.

May could only think to herself, "Did his body just completely heal the cut in that short time? He's only 3 months old, that should be impossible. You need at least a rank 4 healer to heal a wound this fast!"

With May's thoughts all over the place, she calmed herself down as she brought Dyreus to his cradle. Wiping the blood off him as she washed his hair, she could only build more questions.

"His hair is also rather unnatural." His white silvery hair gleamed as the sun fell over him through the window as May washed it.

With the doctor showing up only shortly after while the children stood in the back with gloomy eyes, he did a thorough check of Dyreus's head, only to be left stumbled as to the reason why he was called.

When the doctor questioned May about why he was called, she could only respond with, "Must have been my oversensitivity and old eyes," as she knew what she had witnessed should not be known.

With the doctor looking at May angrily, he quickly left as he had more patients to get to, leaving the children with questioning faces.

As if the children waited for May to break the silence, a small girl could be seen walking over to Dyreus.

Aurora, who had woken up from the earlier confrontation, looked at Dyrues and asked May, "Is he okay?"

May showed a small smile and responded in a soft voice, "He will be okay. He is quite the interesting baby," giving off a small laugh.

She looked at the children who had puzzled faces and swooshed them away with her hand saying, "You all got lucky this time, Let's not make the same mistake shall we?"

With the children quickly nodding, they bolted away, thanking in their hearts they didn't have to face any punishment.

As the sun started to die down, May looked at Dyreus and Aurora, thinking to herself, "One, who is just barely over a year old, achieving what others usually can't until they are at least 2-3 years old, and the other posses some strange healing ability..."

May silently sat down in the chair next to her and leaned back while looking at the ceiling.

"Seems like I'm going to be busy for a while."
