Chapter 5 - Journey To Vasperia

Zym extended his hand, his eyes aglow with an otherworldly energy. With a swift motion, he traced intricate patterns in the air, and a shimmering portal burst into existence before him. The air seemed to ripple and distort, revealing a glimpse of a realm beyond their own - Vasperia, a realm of beauty. The portal pulsed with an eerie blue light.

The air crackled with a potent energy as Zym stood before the portal. Its surface, a swirling vortex of blue and white as it pulsed with an otherworldly light. This plan was a desperate gamble, a journey to find Kael, but Zym felt a flicker of hope ignite within him.

Turning to Zola, he forced a smile, the weight of their situation heavy in his heart. "Remember the plan. Hold the council at bay for as long as possible. I'll return with Kael as soon as I can." Zola, her amber eyes filled with fierce determination, nodded. "Go, Find Kael. Let us do all we can expose the truth and prevent a needless bloodshed."

Taking a deep breath, he plunged into the swirling vortex. The world dissolved around him in a kaleidoscope of colors and disorienting sensations. He tumbled through the portal, the wind whipping at his celestial armour, the taste of ozone acrid on his tongue. The world seemed to bend and twist, reality warping around him before solidifying once more.

He landed on soft, damp earth, the scent of pine and damp earth filling his nostrils. Disoriented, he pushed himself up, taking in his surroundings. He stood within a towering grove of ancient trees, their branches reaching towards the sky like gnarled fingers. Sunlight filtered through a thick canopy of emerald leaves, casting an ethereal glow on the forest floor. The air gentle on his skin, a stark contrast to the harsh winds of Vaul.

In the distance, nestled amongst the trees, a majestic tower shimmered. The Guardian Tower. Its obsidian walls gleamed in the filtered sunlight, intricate glyphs etched into its surface. Zym's heart quickened.

Zym spread his wings and launched himself towards the tower. As he drew closer, a faint hum filled the air, a magical ward pulsing around the structure. Zym recognized the sigil of Vasperia, a swirling vortex similar to the portal he had just traversed. Focusing again, he channeled a portion of his own celestial magic, matching the rhythm of the ward. With a soft sigh, the barrier flickered and dissolved, granting him entry.

Landing softly on a platform jutting from the tower's side, Zym cautiously approached a massive, ornately carved double door. He raised a hand and knocked, the sound echoing through the stillness. After a moment's pause, the door creaked open, revealing a figure cloaked in shadow.

"Who goes there?" a deep voice boomed, laced with a hint of curiosity.

Zym straightened his celestial cloak. "I am Zym, Guardian of the realm of Vaul," he announced. "I come seeking an audience with Kael."

The figure stepped forward, revealing himself from the shadows. Zym's eyes widened in recognition. "Kron? Is that really you?"

Kron, the tinkerer, one of the guardians of Vasperia, and an old friend, smiled warmly. His mechanical arm glinted in the sunlight, a testament to his skill and ingenuity. "Zym! By the stars, it's been too long."

They embraced briefly, the weight of their shared history palpable. Kron stepped back, his eyes twinkling with curiosity and concern. "Come, follow me. Kael and Mieza will be thrilled to see you."

Zym followed Kron through the grand halls of the Guardian Tower. The walls were adorned with ancient tapestries depicting the rich history of Vasperia, and the air buzzed with the faint hum of magical energy. As they walked, Kron filled the silence with chatter.

"How's Vaul? Still as windy as ever?" Kron asked with a chuckle.

Zym smiled, the tension in his shoulders easing slightly. "Windier, if you can believe it."

They arrived at a pair of heavy wooden doors. Kron pushed them open to reveal a spacious chamber bathed in the soft glow of enchanted lanterns. At the far end, Kael and Mieza were deep in conversation, their heads bent over a map.

Kael looked up first, his eyes widening in surprise. "Zym!" he exclaimed, striding forward to embrace his old friend. "It's been ages!"

Mieza joined them, her smile radiant. "Welcome, Zym. It's so good to see you."

They hugged, the warmth of their reunion a stark contrast to the cold urgency that had driven Zym to come to them.

Kael smiled warmly, his eyes reflecting a mix of nostalgia and admiration as it changed colour from the initial green to a calming blue. "Zym, you haven't changed a bit. Still as steadfast and reliable as ever. It's hard to believe how much time has passed since our days at the Font Monastery."

Zym chuckled, shaking his head. "And you, Kael, have become quite the guardian. I heard tales of your battle with the old gods and even the chaos god, Zarathos. Look at you—powerful, confident, and...handsome too. And Meiza, you're even more beautiful and radiant than I remember."

Mieza smiled. "We've all grown in our own ways, Zym. It's good to see that your strength and dedication haven't wavered. The realm of Vaul is lucky to have you as its guardian."

Zym smiled, feeling a surge of warmth at Mieza's words. "And the realms are fortunate to have you two. With allies like you, I believe we can overcome any challenge that comes our way."

Kael chuckled, a hint of pride in his eyes. "We've had our fair share of challenges, but we've come out stronger for it."

Kron, standing to the side with a knowing smile, finally spoke. "Now, Zym, what brings you here and where is Zola? It's clear this isn't just a social visit."

The room grew serious as Zym took a deep breath and looked at Kael. "I'm here because we need your help, Kael. The Kingdom of Kragnir is on the brink of war with the Kingdom of Oephidia. The Garudas and the Nagas are about to go war. The Eye of Naga–a relic of the nagas has been stolen, and an attempt was made on a garuda envoy's life by a naga. We suspect that factions within the Naga society are manipulating events to ignite a conflict. We need to find out who is behind this and stop them before it's too late."

Kael and Meiza exchanged a glance, their expressions hardening. "This is grave news, I know the Nagas and their Queen, Melionie and even Veridian. I used to visit Oephidia when I was a little boy." Kael said. "If war breaks out, it could potentially destroy the realm of Vaul. The Garudas and the Nagas are both powerful. A war between both would be catastrophic. Such battle would be a clash of elemental forces and the land and sky would become weapons."

Mieza nodded. "We'll help in any way we can. But we need to move quickly. If the situation is as dire as you say, every moment counts."

Kron stepped forward, his mechanical hand whirring softly as his gaze lingered on Kael and Mieza. "I know you'd both rather I keep a watchful eye on Vasperia than join you three on this quest. I'd love to come along but Vasperia won't protect itself. Kyra and I will protect it. Don't worry, I have everything here under control. You both may go with Zym, I'll be right here when you both return."

Zym felt a surge of relief. With Kael and Mieza by his side, he felt a renewed sense of hope. "Thank you," he said, his voice earnest. "Your support means everything."

Kael clasped his shoulder. "We're in this together now, Zym. Now, let's get to work. Time is of the essence."

With their reunion complete and their purpose clear, the guardians turned their focus to the task at hand. The future of the realm of Vaul depended on their success, and they were determined to uncover the truth and prevent the impending war.
