Chapter 6 - Unmasking Deceptions

The journey from Vasperia to Vaul was a blur of swirling colors and disorienting sensations. Zym, Kael, and Mieza stood shoulder-to-shoulder on a platform conjured by Kael's magic. As they hurtled through the dimensional portal, the platform shuddered. The wind howled around them, a ferocious tempest that snatched at their cloaks and tested their celestial resilience. The swirling vortex of colors, a dizzying dance of blues and whites, blurred the lines between realms, threatening to disorient them entirely.

"We're going to need a plan," Kael boomed over the howling wind, his voice a steady anchor in the chaos. His white hair whipped around his face, and his eyes, usually a calming blue, flickered to a vibrant green – a reflection of the thoughtful storm brewing within him.

Zym nodded, his celestial armor humming with power despite the chaotic journey. "The Nagas say they found no signs of forced entry," he explained, his voice taut. "The chamber where the Eye was kept was heavily guarded. But..." he hesitated, a shadow of unease crossing his features.

Mieza, her white hair gleaming like moonlight against the kaleidoscope of light, interjected. "Wrong how?" Her voice, laced with concern, echoed in Zym's ears.

"Veridian, a Naga elder," Zym said, his brows furrowed. "He was afraid. He hinted that a Naga faction – The Naja – could be behind everything. The crimson feather he found in the chamber was either Garuda or Naja in origin. The Garudas wouldn't steal a relic of the Nagas, their animosity towards them is well-known."

Kael stroked his chin, his eyes shifting to a fiery orange – a telltale sign of the demon stirring within him. "So, a fabricated feather, planted by the Naja. Veridian's unease…suggests manipulation. Someone's trying to frame the Garudas and ignite a war. There's a mastermind pulling the strings here."

"But why?" Zym's voice held a note of frustration. "What would they gain from such chaos?"

Kael's gaze hardened. "Power, Zym," he said, his voice echoing in the void. "Instability breeds chaos, and chaos is a fertile ground for those who seek to exploit it."

Their conversation was abruptly cut short as they pierced through the swirling vortex. Oephidia materialized beneath them – a glittering subterranean realm of crystal architecture, a stark contrast to the familiar windswept plains on the surface realm, above the subterranean realm. As they flew, the soft, silvery luminescence of Nyxoria, the underground moon, began to peek from the shadows, casting an ethereal glow on the crystal city walls and illuminating the delicate, iridescent blooms that thrived in the gentle light. The statues of serpentine warriors stood guard, their eyes aglow with a soft, otherworldly light, as if the stone itself held the secrets of the ages.

The air crackled with a tension that mirrored the one brewing within them – a tension that spoke of a realm on the preparing for war.

"We're going to the Grand Archives," Zym murmured, his voice low. "Veridian mentioned it holds information about the Eye of Naga and reports of previous theft attempts. But drawing unwanted Naga attention wouldn't be ideal."

With a flick of Kael's wrist, a veil of invisibility shrouded them. They descended soundlessly onto a deserted rooftop, the sounds of the bustling city muffled by the magical cloak.

"So, where do we start?" Mieza whispered, her keen celestial senses scanning the cityscape.

Zym pointed towards a towering structure in the distance. "The Grand Archives," he said. "Veridian mentioned it contains information on the Eye of Naga and reports of those who attempted to steal it. We were gathering information when the Garuda envoy got poisoned. Seems like a good place to start our investigation."

Kael gave a curt nod. "Then let's move."

They navigated the rooftops with practiced ease, their movements imbued with the silent grace of celestial guardians. Reaching the Grand Archives, they found the entrance heavily guarded. Two Naga warriors, their bodies adorned with intricate tattoos and their crimson tails curled protectively around their legs, stood vigilantly before the massive obsidian doors.

"Direct confrontation might not be the best strategy," Kael murmured, his voice barely a whisper.

A mischievous glint sparked in Kael's eyes. With a soft smile playing on his lips, he wove his fingers in the air, casting an illusion spell. A shimmering replica of Veridian materialized beside them, his form complete with the elder's distinctive features.

The guards, startled by the sudden appearance of the replica, exchanged confused glances. One of them hesitantly stepped forward.

"G-greetings, sir," the guard stammered. "We weren't expecting any visitors..."

The illusion boomed with a voice that mimicked Veridian's deep baritone. "Greetings. I require immediate access to the Grand Archives. Urgent business of the highest order."

The guards, intimidated by the elder's stern demeanor and the urgency in his voice, recited an incantation, the heavy obsidian doors groaning as they slowly unlocked. The illusion strode confidently through the entrance, followed by Zym, Kael, and Mieza who slipped past unnoticed. With a silent exchange of glances, they shut the doors behind them with a soft thud.

The vast chamber within was a treasure trove of knowledge. Countless scrolls and artifacts lined the walls, their aged parchments whispering forgotten secrets. The air hung heavy with the scent of time and forgotten lore.

The illusionary Veridian gave a curt nod before dissolving into a wisp of shimmering light.

"We need to find anything related to the Eye of Naga," Zym whispered, his eyes scanning the seemingly endless rows of shelves.

Mieza, her celestial senses tingling with a newfound focus, walked towards a specific section. "There," she pointed, her voice barely a murmur. "The Naga script on those shelves seems to deal with powerful artifacts."

They approached the designated section. Zym, fluent in the intricate Naga script, deciphered the symbols with practiced ease. He scanned the scrolls, his heart pounding with a mix of anticipation and dread.

"Here," Zym said, pulling out an ancient scroll, its edges frayed with age. "This one mentions the Eye of Naga. It details its origins and powers, but more importantly, it references recent entries. Maybe we'll find a clue about its theft."

Kael and Mieza leaned in, their eyes following the elegant, serpentine script as Zym read aloud. "'The Eye of Naga,'" he intoned, "'a powerful glowing orb of immense power, capable of controlling the very elements of nature. It grants the wielder shape-shifting abilities, immortality, and more. It has been guarded by the Nagas for centuries, a symbol of their sovereignty and strength.'"

Mieza's eyes narrowed as she considered the implications. "If someone wanted to destabilize both the Garudas and the Nagas," she said, her voice laced with dawning realization, "stealing the Eye and framing the Garudas would be the perfect catalyst. It would weaken both parties, making them easier to manipulate."

Kael nodded grimly. "We have to figure out who stands to gain from such a scheme."

Zym continued scanning the scroll, his eyes catching a recent entry. "This mentions an incident – an attempt to breach the chamber where the Eye was kept. It describes a mysterious figure who was repelled by the warding spells but left behind traces of dark magic."

Kael's eyes widened. "Dark magic? That could be the missing piece. If we can trace it back to its source, we might uncover who's behind this."

Mieza's voice was firm, radiating purpose. "We need to find Veridian and get him to confirm this use of dark magic. If he can testify about this before the Naga council, it might sway their opinion and prevent war."

Zym nodded, rolling up the scroll. "Time isn't on our side," he stated, the urgency evident in his voice. "The longer we wait, the closer we get to a full-blown war."

However, their moment of discovery was cut short. The sound of approaching footsteps echoed through the vast chamber. The trio froze, their eyes darting towards the entrance where a group of Naga warriors materialized, their gazes sweeping across the room with suspicion.

Kael reacted swiftly. "Time to go," he whispered, his voice urgent.

With a familiar flick of his wrist, he cast another invisibility spell, shrouding them from sight. They slipped past the unsuspecting guards, their mission far from over. Their quest for the truth had just taken a crucial turn, leading them on a race against time to prevent the realms from succumbing to the chaos orchestrated by a cunning mastermind.
