Chapter 1 - Chapter One : Betrothal

The green trees rustle as the wind gently comes and goes with birds flying in the air traveling and rabbits hop here and there near their holes. In a small open field with slightly tall grass there is a wild boar that looked to weigh about 180 pounds eating at the dead body of a baby deer. Not too far away the grass is slowly moving without a sound inching closer and closer. There is a boy looking no older than fifteen holding a bow at the ready with a dagger attached to the side of his hunting clothes. The boy held himself still and aimed the bow at the boar's neck for a minute and waited for the boar to lower it's head to take another bite while looking down for a split second and shot an arrow towards it.

There is a loud squeal as the boar jumps up and runs to a tree to rub the arrow off, while that is happening the man grabs his dagger and places the bow on his back as he rushes after the boar that looks at him with anger in it's eyes as he runs up. It stops rubbing against the tree and with the arrow still in it's neck causing it pain, it starts to run up to the boy. He holds his dagger and right when they are about to hit each other he moves to the side and stabs the boar's side and continues running slicing the boar on the side leaving a deep wound that bleeds continuously. Feeling the pain the boar goes into a frenzy trying to kill the boy for the next half and hour the man avoids the boar by jumping into the trees and running around in a zigzag before it finally falls to the ground dead by blood loss.

The boy pulls out rope from his bag and ties the boar's legs and before dragging it down the mountain to the village. Once he steps into the village there are looks of admiration as he passes through.

"Isn't that Bai Chun? He hunted another boar today as well." A young girl says to another girl.

"Any lady who marries him in the future will live a happy life since I heard from my Lao Po title for a married woman used by family" Another girl whispers with a blush as she eyes Bai Chun. Some near-by boys who are interested in those girls look at Bai Chun with an angry expression.

"I feel bad for any lady that marries Bai Chun because he is an orphan with no home since he lives in the village orphanage." One of the boy's loudly says with a smile as he watches Bai Chun walk away with the boar being dragged behind him. After hearing that the girls looked at the one who spoke with eyes that showed they think he is stupid.

"It's not as bad as you think since there are no in laws to worry about once you marry." The girls say before turning to leave, leaving behind some boy's laughing at the boy who looked angry for being embarrassed.

Bai Chun leaves the village and walks to the city to sell the boar. It takes him twenty minutes to make it due to the boar slowing him down. Once at the gate he is forced to pay two copper to enter the city. Then he enters the shopping center and goes to the butcher's shop where he pays ten copper to get the boar cut up and the innards put in a bag of animal skin for him. He then walks all over the shopping district selling the boars meat and innards for the next two hours. The sun is at the halfway point in the sky now he holds thirty copper in his satchel.

Bai Chun looks up at the sky as he walks back looking tired, thinking about how hard he must work compared to other guys whop have a family. Bai Chun is happy that he doesn't have to get bullied by his family through like some other guys and that he doesn't need to fight to make his grandparents favor him. He heard that if your grandparents don't favor you, your life will be hard in the family. The village is soon seen coming up after ten minutes of walking.

Once entering the village Bai Chun quickly cools his face and walks to the orphanage. Once he opens the door the sound of children screaming, laughing, and crying is heard but before he can enter he hears his name.

 "Bai Chun! Come!"

Bai Chun looks back and sees the village head looking at him with a smile as if seeing an old friend. Bai Chun pauses and smiles seeing the middle aged man who looks to be balding. Closing the door he approaches the village head and gives a slight bow in greeting.

 "Village head." He says

"Come to my home I wish to speak with you." The village head says with a smile. The two walk back to the village heads home while chatting.

"So, I hear you will soon be taking the exam to become a Secondary, Rank 9, Grade 30 official." He says slightly probing. Bai Chun nods his head with a smile.

"Yes, I wish to get to a better point in life so I shall take the exam plus once I become an official, I will be able to make a monthly salary from the government." He says his eyes glittering just thinking about it.

"I'm glad since you have been studying for years since you turned ten especially since you used the money you make from hunting to pay for everything." The Village Head said laughing as they entered his home through the gate and into the first room for speaking with guest. The two sit opposite of each other and the Village Heads face quickly changes looking cautious.

"Well the reason I wish to speak with you is about your path of officialdom. The path will be hard since you have no family background and are an orphan." Bai Chun's face hardens when he hears that as he looks at the village head.

"Trust me I'm trying to help you." He says trying to calm him down.

"Look many summers ago do you remember saving both of my daughters from a boar attack?" He asked. Bai Chun nods his head, he remembers that because of saving the two the Village Head favored him and protected him from getting his things stolen many times after the fact.

"Well I believe that you should marry so that the nobles will have one less thing to say about you." He quickly said. Bai Chun froze as he heard that since he thought no girl wished to marry him due to him being a orphan plus he isn't twenty yet so it's a bit early for him to marry.

"I am only fifteen and who would wish to marry me since I am an orphan?" Bai Chun asked looking confused.

"Don't worry I will marry one of my daughters to you." The Village Head said with a smile.

"I don't know." Bai Chun said looking hesitant.

"Trust me I've been helping you for all these years I wish to help you once more. Plus I will give you a plot of land and help you get a home made if you agree to marry." Village Head said with a sly smile that Bai Chun didn't see since he is looking down and thinking about how pretty both girls are before nodding his head.

"Ok but who will I marry?" He asked.

"Well there is my eldest daughter Tao Chun who is seventeen she is very elegant and was taught well by my qizi on how to run a home but she is a bit old for you, don't want to embarrass you by having a qizi that is so much older then you. He acting like he is thinking.

"Then there is my youngest daughter Tao Fang who is fourteen just of marriageable age although she doesn't know much about running a home she will learn quickly. She is young so there will be more time to have children with her compared to Tao Chun and she will be easy to train to your liking since this is the age most men like to marry their qizi." He said pushing Tao Fang more compared to Tao Chun. Bai Chun thought about it before looking up.

"Um, I guess Tao Fang?" He said hesitantly. Village Head smiled and laughed while standing up and holding out his hand.

"Well then we agree then! You will marry Tao Fang after your home is finished being made and don't worry I will pay the workers all you need to do is get your wedding clothes ready and get the women of the village to help you decorate the home in red to welcome your soon to be bride in. As for food you can talk with the women of the village to help." The Village Head spoke quickly and excitedly as they both shook hands. He dragged Bai Chun into his office to get a deed for a plot of land and signed his name on it.

"This will be the land you both will live on. It's on the edge of the village near the river one of the best places to live on. I saved this land just for you." He said with a smile thinking that he's glad he got him early before Bai Chun got too big for his daughter to marry. After speaking for a while they agreed to make a small home with a small courtyard and three empty rooms. If he wishes for bigger home then Bai Chun must pay for it himself.
