Chapter 50 - Door

Reeva went to greet the knight that standing guard in front of the prison bars. He's been searching for the bundle of reeds inside the prison but has no luck. The only thing there is a prisoner, stone walls, and iron bars. Occasionally a candle but that's it.

There is no bundle of reed anywhere.

So his only option is to look for it in the living quarters. He acend the stairs and arrived back at the living quarters. Then he began searching for the reed. It has to be here somewhere. However no matter how much he searched he wasn't able to find it.

The only place left is the locked room of the living quarters. Reeva didn't want to break into one of those but he had no choice. The door was made out of wood and the lock was old. The church has existed for a long time and the living quarters didn't get the best treatment.

After all, what would a priest need a nice bedroom for?

Reeva prepared himself against the stone wall opposite the door. Then after a quick breath, he charges at it. He held one of his legs and smashed the door. Due to how old the thing is, the door crumbles with just one kick. It snaps open and swags out to the side.

He wastes no time and goes in and searches the whole room. But after looking around it has the same interior as the one he has access to. A chair, table, bed and a wardrobe. Nothing that looks like a reed.

Reeva scratched his head. Does he need to check every door? He was racing against time here, he didn't know how long the homeless person could outrun the priest for. Especially if they have a burner that would burn themself for divination.

Just thinking about it made him mad. How could they use someone like that? He kicks another door extra hard just to get it out of his system.

Nothing again

He moved to another room and kicked down the door. He repeated this for five more doors before coming to a halt. His breathing had become much heavier; each door only took one or two full-power kicks, but using that much force drained his stamina. Moreover, every time he did this, some of the wood risked piercing his leg.

He needed to change his approach.

He couldn't just keep kicking down every door. He stopped and looked down the row of doors. There had to be something different about the door with a bundle of reeds stored behind it.

He began inspecting the doors one by one until he found something: a door that was more luxurious than the others. He had seen many doors in this place, most of them either broken or with rotting wood. But this one was special—it looked as though it had been replaced recently, and its design was clearly superior to the others.

This is most likely it.

At the front door, one could see the name of who's this belong to

Theodore Gunhorn

The bishop of this place. Reeva has heard of him before from the people who buy his burger. They said that he was a ruthless but fair man. He judges people based on their merit to the god. But from his experience is a little different than they said.

Theodore was a little aggressive in his eyes. The guy strike him as someone who would do anything in the name of god. A little too willing to do everything in the name of god.

That doesn't matter right now. The thing that needs to be done is to kick the door down. It's sturdier than most other doors but at the end of the day, it's just a wooden door. It will break after some force.

Bang bang bang!

Took him three times and the door finally came down. Reeva stepped inside the room and found three features that the other didn't have. The first glaring feature is a wooden floor and the second is the fireplace. and lastly, he found what he was here for.

The bundle of reed

There are quite a number of them stacked on the floor next to the fireplace. Reeva picks two stacks up just in case he needs more. Then he goes back to the hallway and down the stairs. He passes the guard with a wary look and finally arrives back at the front of the stone door.

Reeva looked around the place and found that there was a spot in the hallway that was a lot darker than the surroundings. He places one of the stacks of Reed there and uses the fire from the candle nearby to light it.

The reed starts burning and the fire shines brightly bu, but no smoke comes out of the fire. It looks rather surreal when a fire burns but nothing comes out of it. The only thing that changes is the Reed which is getting darker and darker by the second.

Reeva waits for something to happen. But nothing did. He throws in another stack of reeds and waits for it to burn. However, it didn't do anything.

What did I do wrong?

He thought while walking toward the door. Did he need to push it open? Reeva places his hand on it and exerts some force. The door came door easily than before. Like the weighty door that he couldn't push never existed.

However, when Reeva was about to open the door, he heard something. Footstep rapidly approaching Reeva.

2 people turn the corner, one knight in armor and another in a white robe.

"Stop right there!! What are you doing!?"

Plutus shouts when he notices that a priest is accessing a deep part of the prison. The torture chamber is only open when putting someone inside or getting someone out. But usually one would need permission from the head of that church to access this area.

And Plutus was clear that Theodore didn't order the release of the person inside the torture chamber!

That must mean that this is either a rogue priest or a thief trying to release a prisoner. The latter outcome is more likely than the former. The knight also shares Plutus's suspicion, he readies his sword.
