Chapter 48 - Reed

"Do you know where that is?"

Reeva asks in a low voice.

"Deeper in the hallway there would be an intersection, take a left and you'll be there. Don't ever take a right, you'd not want to be there."

His last sentence was a sincere warning. Reeva's eyebrows perk up at such a specific warning that he got.

"Why?"

"You might not know this but, the church has some supernatural powers. You don't want to be cursed by things that they lock up in there. I once saw a guy who lost his mind after they took him to the right, even being in a sunfire chamber is a better fate than that."

"Thank you for the information. I'll help you out when I can"

"HAhA" The man gives another laugh "Do your best I guess"

Reeva didn't completely trust that information but decided to heed the man's word. After walking down the person's cell row, he finally arrives at the intersection that the prisoner was talking about.

When he looks to the left, he sees a long hallway with a door at the end bearing the image of a sun perched atop a torch. From the outside, the stone door that had it engraved into it appeared immovable. The route there was lit by more candles.

That is the Sunfire torture chamber

Reeva turns to face the other way. He was surprised to see that this side had a lot more light than the Sunfire chamber. The candle stand was blazing with candlelight, the floor was covered in melted wax, and there were candles all throughout the tiny corridor. At the end of the hallway, a smooth-looking stone door awaits him. Almost calling him to open it.

He resists his urge to check out the right path. He knew better than anyone that checking out a random place where there clearly a story about something bad happened wouldn't work well for him.

Right now, he is chasing an unidentified threat. And he could not get into difficulty with the right door and follow a grey robe at the same time. It would not work out nicely.

Shaking his head, Reeva decides to go. He walks to the left path. The door waits for him, ready to be open. Reeva's hand extends to open the door. However, it was too heavy for his hand.

He increased the force by using two hands to press on the door but nothing happened. The stone door wouldn't move. As a last-ditch effort, he use his whole body to push on the stone door. The door sounds a bit as it moves.

However, it was only by a little, Reeva could only see a slight creek on the door.

What the hell

The door is too heavy for him. Reeva's body isn't the best physically but he was still in his youth with some mystic training at the academy. While the priest at the church doesn't work out or do any exercise at all. How does a guy like that open the chamber? Did he need more people?

Somehow that doesn't feel right. Reeva tried his luck another time but after pushing with all his might, the door still wouldn't move. He finally gave up on it and decided to find another solution.

He went back to the prisoner.

"Hey, do you know how to open the left door?"

"What? The door is locked?"

"No, it's just incredibly heavy"

"Huh..."

Observing the man in the shadows, Reeva deduced from his response that the priest had to have been able to get through by some other means. All he has to do is discover what it is.

"Does the priest bring anything down here?"

The malnourished man stares off into the distance thinking about something.

"They rarely came down here..... Most of the time it's just a prisoner and sometimes it would be a candle replacement."

"Did they bring anything here when they brought the grey robe man?"

The guy stared at the ceiling again. His eyes have little to no life left but they flicker when he figures out something.

"There's something that one of the burners walks in with."

"Burners?"

"You don't know?" The prisoner looks shocked "There is a class of priests called the burner that exists solely to be used as divination fuel. They will convert one of us here to their cause and turn us into instant divination or another supernatural spell that they have.

Reeva looks at the prisoner weirdly. He knew that the church had some kind of these activities but he never knew that it was just capturing someone and turning them into Divination fuel. This is much worse than using consenting people for this.

"That's beside the point, There's some kind of grass that they often bring... I overheard they call it..... dee... I think?" The man shakes his head "Aghh... I can't remember"

"Is it Reed?"

"Yes, that's the thing they talk about! They brought a bundle of it with them along with the grey robe guy. But I don't know what they do with it."

"I think I had some idea... Thank you for your time"

Reeva couldn't believe it. Is the Sun church connected to the reed farmer in the desolate land? What are the connections? Isn't it just a weird dream he had as a side effect of being unconscious?

Or is he tripping?

He simply didn't know, he just needed confirmation. If he burned the reed and that door open, it would prove that the dream had some merit. If it's not then it is just a coincidence.

No

It's too convenient for him to have that dream and discover a use of it here. Someone is pulling something behind the scenes and he doesn't like it.

It reminds him of the author. Someday he will ascend to godhood and have a slap with the guy.

Or is he above god since he is the author of the god?

Shit

Reeva shakes his head and leaves the prison. He just needs to find a bundle of reeds to prove his point. There needs to be one somewhere here right?
