Chapter 4 - ch.04

"What do you think?"

"It's a big fish, master."

"I know, I mean, what do you think about this fish?"

"I don't understand what you mean, master."

His broad smile vanished from his face. Throwing the fish to the floor, he made his way back to the lake. What did you expect me to compliment your big fish? I have to put up with your foolishness, but there's no clause in the contract that says I have to give you praise. And yes, this fish is big enough to feed a family of five people. Your ability to catch it is unparalleled, but you won't hear me say that, master.

He did not instruct me to accompany him on the boat, so I pulled out my sword and began practicing. The only lesson I learned from our little earlier combat was that there was still a long way to go, I studied the materials provided to me by Master Nemo, watching the battles between soldiers and the fearsome creatures. However, as I observed, I realized that nothing could have prepared me for the raw intensity of an actual fight. My master had shown no signs of pressure during our duel, but the monsters I had observed in the videos seemed to exude a menacing aura that unnerved even the most seasoned soldiers. It was unsettling to see how easily these soldiers fell to the power of these creatures' gazes.

My master will turn fifteen the day after tomorrow, and he will become one of those monsters. Of course, he won't be going on a rampage and causing havoc like they do. He'll always be a human being. All that will change is that everyone who see him will be aware of what he truly is.

Rather than being afraid when my mother informed me that we would serve an Aloki, I was filled with sympathy. My master was labeled a monster from the moment of his birth, and his father cast him into that cottage as soon as he saw fit in order to get rid of him.

He was banished here, according to my mother, he went on a rage and attacked his brother. I was suspicious of him even though I felt sorry for him, but with time, I started to have doubts about this story. Will my master, who had been keeping his distance from my cat and keeping his eyes fixed on it to ensure she wouldn't approach him, do this?

My master has exemplified the nobility and morals that one would expect from a family such as his throughout the years. Had it not been for that repulsive mark at the nape of his neck, my master would have led a respectable life and even become a hero similar to his father.

His incredible strength makes him seem like a monster to me, but he's not like the raging ones outside. He is a monster that we have brought up as humans. I am happy with the progress humanity has made when I hear him chuckle while reading one of the books his mother brought him. However, I also wonder what might happen if he saw something more advanced like a smartphone. Will it be permitted for him to use it at the base? Is he ready for it? His father gave us explicit instructions to keep him from learning anything about the outside world. When he gets to the base, will this ban end?

My master isn't particularly intelligent; I'm not claiming he has an intellectual disability or anything. I don't think he'll be ready for this technical leap. Master Nemo once comforted me after a training session, telling me that the difference in our grades is similar to the difference in our physical strength between me and my master.

He even used savage methods to get fish. I looked at him again; every few minutes, he would shoot me glares. He looks at me differently than every morning when I water the flowers. I felt exposed beneath those glances, but I was at ease with these angry glares compared to those.

Since I am the weaker party in this situation and require training, I believe it would be better to return to my training rather than worrying about my master.

"Take it"

I handed her the fish and left for my own cottage. Since she had decreased my fish and referred to it as "big," I had not opened my mouth. Simply large? What about the gift that every fisherman should give his wife—the freedom from the dry land and the happiness of starved children? You chose your words, and the outcome was "big."

How can someone like you who has eaten fish before be content with the term "big" if I can explain myself so well about her without ever having touched a fish? Maybe before I go, I could give her some of my books so she can get a little education.

Yes, that's right. This dreamy girl wants to hunt monsters, so she's going to the base with me. I think it's an opportunity to educate her before she gets devoured in a terrible way. What a cruel world we live in. She will die weak and ignorant as well.

I opened the door to see a red-haired woman bending down to put the tray on the table. She didn't notice me behind her, so I just enjoyed the view for a few seconds before she sensed my presence and turned to look at me. Sigh, it's okay. Laura has treasures in the front too; actually, no. No matter from what angle you look at Laura, she is always a delight to the eye. If monsters don't devour Miura in the near future, she'll blossom into a gorgeous flower just like her mother, and I will be fortunate enough to see that happen.

Without saying a word, Laura bowed and quickly left. It seemed that she really wanted to spend as little time with me as possible or that she ran to check on her daughter. Most likely, she thought that the terrible monster that was me had done something to her. Laura, I will miss you.

Now I have to worry about the terrifying events that will happen tomorrow on my last day before I leave forever, when my mother and perhaps my siblings will come here and spend the whole day here.

"I can't wait for tomorrow."

All I want is for tonight to be free of nightmares.
