Chapter 31 - Find the red aura

The neon-drenched streets of Humanoi city pulsed with an otherworldly energy as night descended.

Skyscrapers, their facades a blend of sleek modernism and traditional Asian architecture, stretched towards the star-speckled sky.

Holographic advertisements flickered in the air, casting an eerie glow on the faces of passersby, each lost in their own world of augmented reality displays and neural implants.

Amidst this cacophony of progress and tradition, a towering structure stood apart—its obsidian surface seeming to absorb the very light around it.

This was the headquarters of the Sentinels, the clandestine organization tasked with maintaining the delicate balance between the mortal realm and the spirit world.

Deep within the building's heart, Director Yuna Kim stood before a wall of holographic screens, her sharp eyes scanning endless streams of data.

The soft blue glow of the displays accentuated the worry lines etched on her face, a testament to the weight of her responsibilities.

"Status report," she commanded, her voice carrying the authority of someone accustomed to being obeyed without question.

A young analyst, his fingers dancing across an invisible keyboard, responded without looking up. "No new sightings of the red aura, Director. Our agents have combed through the Eastern District, but the trail goes cold at the old temple."

Yuna's lips pressed into a thin line.

The spirit candidate with the red aura had been eluding them for weeks now.

Unlike the others they'd encountered—and subsequently contained—this one was different.

Powerful. Enigmatic. And potentially dangerous.

She turned to face a larger screen dominating the center of the room.

With a subtle gesture, she initiated a secure communication link.

The screen flickered to life, revealing the stern visage of an elderly man, his silver hair cropped short in military fashion.

"General Park," Yuna greeted with a respectful nod.

"Director Kim," the man's gruff voice filled the room. "I trust you have good news for me regarding the red aura Spirit king candidate?".

Yuna steeled herself. "I'm afraid not, sir. The spirit candidate continues to evade our efforts."

General Park's eyes narrowed. "This is unacceptable, Director. The longer this individual remains at large, the greater the risk to our operations. Need I remind you of the importance of your mission?".

"No, sir," Yuna replied, her tone carefully neutral. "The Sentinels understand the gravity of the situation. We're utilizing every resource at our disposal."

The General growled.

"See that you do. Our informants in the spirit realm speak of growing unrest. If this red aura truly belongs to a Spirit King candidate, as our intel suggests, then the balance we've worked so hard to maintain is at risk."

Yuna nodded, her mind racing through contingencies. "We've increased patrols in areas with high spiritual energy concentrations. Our research division is working around the clock to enhance our detection capabilities."

"Good," General Park grunted. "But I want more. Activate the Phantom Protocol."

The command sent a chill down Yuna's spine.

The Phantom Protocol was a last resort, involving the deployment of specially augmented Sentinel agents—individuals who had undergone extensive modification to channel spiritual energy.

It was dangerous, both for the agents and potentially for civilians caught in the crossfire.

"Sir, with all due respect, the Phantom Protocol has not been field-tested. The risks—"

"Are necessary," the General cut her off.

"This red aura candidate, this supposed Spirit king candidate, has evaded conventional methods for too long. We need results, Director Kim. Activate the protocol and bring him in. By any means necessary."

The screen went dark, leaving Yuna alone with the weight of her new orders.

She turned back to her team, noting the mix of anticipation and fear on their faces.

They had all heard the General's command.

"You heard him," she said, her voice steady despite the turmoil in her mind. "Initiate the Phantom Protocol. And may the spirits have mercy on us all."

As her team scrambled to comply, Yuna gazed out at the glittering cityscape of Humanoi.

Somewhere out there, a young man named Ryan Hanley was going about his life, unaware that he had just become the most hunted individual in the city.

Little did the Sentinels know, their quarry was far more than just another spirit candidate. The game of cat and mouse that was about to unfold would shake the very foundations of their world.

…,..

The winding path through the outskirts of the Undercity stretched before Ryan Hanley and Migi like a ribbon of shadows.

Neon signs and holographic advertisements gradually gave way to dilapidated buildings and overgrown lots, nature reclaiming what civilization had abandoned.

Ryan walked with an easy confidence, his steps light despite the weight of his backpack.

His eyes, a striking shade that seemed to shift between green and gold, scanned their surroundings with a mix of curiosity and caution.

Beside him, Migi moved with fluid grace, her lithe form belying the strength coiled within.

"You know," Ryan said, breaking the comfortable silence that had fallen between them, "when I imagined going on a quest to find my possible past-life wife, I didn't think it'd involve quite so much walking."

Migi's laughter, light and melodious, filled the air. "Oh? And what did you imagine, oh great Spirit King? A magical teleportation device? Or perhaps a noble steed to carry you?"

Ryan grinned, enjoying their banter. "Hey, a guy can dream, can't he? Besides, with all this spiritual mumbo-jumbo, would a teleporter really be that far-fetched? It was back in my era".

"Mumbo-jumbo?" Migi raised an eyebrow, her tone playfully stern. "Need I remind you that this 'mumbo-jumbo' is the reason we're not currently in Sentinel custody?"

"Fair point," Ryan conceded, his expression growing more serious. "I still can't believe how close they came to catching us back there. If you hadn't sensed them coming..."

Migi's eyes softened, and she reached out to squeeze Ryan's hand. "But I did sense them, and we're safe. That's what matters."

Ryan gave a small smirk, "Well, I still think I could take them all on".

"Ahh darling~~~~" Migi groaned ever so cutely as she strides forward.

Ryan simlply laughed.

The day wore on, the urban sprawl of the Undercity faded entirely, replaced by a dense forest that seemed to pulse with an otherworldly energy.

Shafts of fading sunlight filtered through the canopy, casting dappled shadows on the forest floor.

"We should make camp soon," Migi suggested, her eyes scanning the deepening shadows. "The Evergreen may be secure, but the path there is treacherous at night."

Ryan nodded, suppressing a shiver that had nothing to do with the cooling air. "Yeah, good call. I'd rather not stumble into a nest of rogue spirits or whatever other surprises this place might have in store."

They found a small clearing nestled between the gnarled roots of ancient trees.

As Ryan set up their tent, Migi gathered firewood, her movements swift and silent.

Soon, a cheerful fire crackled before them, pushing back the encroaching darkness.

Seated side by side on a fallen log, they shared a simple meal of dried rations and foraged berries.

Ryan couldn't help but steal glances at Migi, admiring the way the firelight danced across her features.

He could have sworn the more be stared at her chest and thighs, she thicker they got.

And with her new dress, it made it all the more sexier.

She caught his gaze and smiled, a hint of mischief in her eyes.

"See something you like, Darling?" she teased.

Ryan felt a flush creep up his neck, but he met her gaze steadily. "Maybe I do. Got a problem with that?"

Migi's smile widened, and she leaned in closer, her voice dropping to a husky whisper.

"Not at all. In fact, I might even encourage it."

Their lips met in a kiss that started gentle but quickly deepened.

When they finally pulled apart, both were slightly breathless.

"Wow," Ryan murmured, his cocky demeanor momentarily shaken. "That was..."

"Overdue," Migi finished for him, her eyes sparkling with amusement and affection.

As the night wore on, they talked in low voices, sharing stories and laughter.

Ryan spoke of the dream that had led them on this journey—fragmented images of a woman with eyes like starlight and a smile that felt like coming home.

Migi listened intently, her hand never leaving his.

"What if we find her?" Migi asked softly, a hint of vulnerability in her voice. "What if she really is your wife from a past life?".

Ryan was quiet for a moment, considering.

Then he turned to face Migi fully, his expression serious.

"Then I'll have a new goal… My own personal harem with you by my side".

Migi's smile was radiant, and she leaned in to kiss him again, a gentle brush of lips filled with promise.
