The next morning, the sun rose over Axeris Academy, bathing its grand buildings in warm light. Students began to gather in the courtyard, preparing for a new day. Eizan and Alex, having just finished breakfast in the cafeteria, made their way to Elemental Manipulation 1 class. This class was always one of the most exciting at the academy, where students learned to control various Element which they have raised at the aged of fifteen.
"So, how did you sleep last night?" Alex asked, trying to distract Eizan from the weight on his mind.
"It was a bit tough," Eizan admitted. "I'm still thinking about Director Emilia's offer. It feels like a dream."
Alex nodded in understanding. "It's natural to feel that way. But try to focus on the class for now. Maybe today's lesson will help you make a decision."
They arrived at the classroom and entered, joining their classmates who were already seated. At the front of the room, Professor Arion, an experienced instructor known for his meticulous teaching, was ready to begin. He was an exceptional sorcerer, renowned for his mastery of elemental control.
"Good morning, students," Professor Arion greeted in a calm yet authoritative voice. "Today, we will continue our lesson on how to manipulate elements. As you know, elements are one of the most fundamental and crucial aspects of magic. Understanding and mastering them will give you a significant advantage in both combat and your future missions."
As Professor Arion explained, Eizan tried to listen attentively, but his mind kept drifting back to Director Emilia's offer. The words about becoming a Third-Level Knight and the heavy responsibilities that came with it swirled in his mind, clouding his focus on the lesson.
"To manipulate elements effectively, you must understand the basic nature of each element," Professor Arion continued. "For example, fire is destructive and energetic, while water is flexible and calming. You must align yourself with the element you wish to control."
Eizan tried to take notes, but his fingers felt stiff on the paper. His eyes occasionally glanced out the window, where he could see the training field in the distance. He imagined himself training hard, striving to reach a higher rank as a Knight.
"Additionally," Professor Arion went on, "controlling elements requires full concentration and a deep understanding of Mana. You must be able to sense the flow of Mana within your body and direct it accurately to produce the desired effect."
Eizan took a deep breath, trying to refocus. He knew the lesson was important and couldn't be ignored, especially if he wanted to become a better Knight. But the burden of the offer felt so heavy, almost suffocating every thought he had.
"For a practical example, let's work with the element of wind," Professor Arion said, raising his hand. A gentle breeze began to swirl around the classroom, bringing a slight relief to Eizan's chest. "Observe how the wind moves and flows. You must be able to feel this energy and learn to control it with your mind and Mana."
As Eizan was lost in thought about Director Emilia's offer, a small rolled-up piece of paper suddenly floated through the air and landed right on his desk. He glanced around and saw Graham, a noble student known for causing trouble, sitting in the back row with his followers. They were all laughing softly, clearly enjoying the disruption.
Eizan slowly unrolled the paper and read the message written in red ink:
"Who do you think you are, Eizan? Don't dream about becoming a Third-Level Knight. You're just a lucky farm kid."
It seemed the rumors about Director Emilia's offer had reached the students throughout the academy.
Eizan felt his blood boil but tried to stay calm. He didn't want to cause a scene in class and attract Professor Arion's attention. However, Graham's laughter and the laughter of his friends continued to disrupt his concentration.
Alex, noticing the situation, whispered to Eizan, "Ignore them. Just focus on the lesson. They're just jealous of your talent."
Eizan nodded, trying to follow Alex's advice. He put the note in his notebook and refocused on Professor Arion's lecture, although the laughter behind him was still clearly audible.
But the disturbance didn't stop there. A few minutes later, another paper flew through the air and hit Eizan on the head. This time, he couldn't hold back any longer. He turned around and stared daggers at Graham, who was now standing with a mocking grin on his face.
"Having trouble, Eizan?" Graham asked, his tone sneering. "Or are you too busy dreaming of becoming a Knight?"
Professor Arion, noticing the commotion, stopped his lecture and looked over at Eizan and Graham. "What's going on? Graham, are you responsible for this disruption?"
Graham shrugged nonchalantly. "Just having a little fun, Professor. It seems Eizan can't handle a bit of teasing."
Professor Arion frowned. "This is not the place for jokes, Graham. If you continue to disrupt the class, I will have to remove you."
Graham snorted and sat back down, though his eyes remained fixed on Eizan with a look of contempt. Eizan sighed deeply, struggling to control his anger. He knew that responding to Graham with violence would only make things worse.
As the class continued, Eizan's suppressed rage reached a boiling point. Graham's relentless provocations and condescending attitude had pushed him to the edge. Today, Eizan decided it was enough. He wouldn't let Graham continue to insult him without a proper response.
The class ended, and students began to leave the room. Eizan waited patiently, watching Graham who was still standing near the door with his friends, laughing heartily. Fueled by determination, Eizan approached Graham.
"Graham!" Eizan called out, his voice firm and resolute.
Graham turned, regarding Eizan with a sneer. "What is it, Eizan? Still not satisfied after today?"
"Admit it," Eizan said loudly, "you're only bothering me because you're jealous. If you really want to settle this, let's do it properly. I challenge you to a duel!"
Graham frowned and laughed. "A duel? So you want to prove yourself that way? Fine, if that's what you want. But remember, I won't fight you here."
Eizan knew Graham wouldn't agree to a fight in the crowded classroom. He thought for a moment and then said, "If you're so sure of yourself, let's do it in front of Professor Arion. He can watch and judge our duel."
Graham looked at Eizan with a sharp gaze, then nodded. "Alright. I'll take you to Professor Arion."
The two of them walked to the training area outside the classroom, where students often practiced magic and combat. The scene outside was bustling, with many students watching as Eizan and Graham made their way to the training field. Several students followed them, eager to see what would happen.
Upon reaching the training ground, Eizan and Graham stood facing each other with Professor Arion. Graham spoke up, "Professor Arion, Eizan has challenged me to a duel. I think it's a good opportunity to show who's superior."
Professor Arion glanced at Eizan, then turned to Graham. "Are both of you certain about this decision?"
Eizan nodded with determination. "Yes, Professor. I want to end this once and for all."
Professor Arion nodded and looked around to ensure no rules would be broken. "Very well. I will observe this duel and ensure all rules are followed. From now on, no destructive or life-threatening magic."
Graham smirked, positioning himself confidently. "Get ready, Eizan."
They both touched the Academy Emblem on their chests, signaling their acceptance of the duel.
Eizan prepared himself, recalling all the lessons and training he had undergone. He would not let his emotions disrupt his focus. With a flick of his hand, he summoned his Mana, ready to face this challenge.
The watching students gathered around the training area, adding to the tension. All eyes were on Eizan and Graham, anticipating the duel that would determine who was stronger between them.
