People quickened their pace as the scent of food wafted through the air, and Gu Shi Yi, crippled by hunger with eyes turning blue, hastened her steps and approached the overseer. The overseer glanced at her and handed her a rough bowl.
"What's your name?"
"Gu..."
Gu Shi Yi's mind was so clouded by hunger that she nearly gave away her true name.
"Li... Li Yaner..."
"Sounds like a woman's name. Are you a woman?"
The overseer sized up the ragged Gu Shi Yi, who just laughed.
"Too poor to feed a boy, so I got a girl's name!"
"Hmm!"
The overseer didn't ask further and gestured to the person behind him with the notepad to record the name.
"Off you go!"
Gu Shi Yi was allowed in to have her meal.
