Chapter 39 - Mate

As the day's final rays of sunlight faded, the city of Grey moon began to stir, the sky transformed into a kaleidoscope of pinks, oranges, and purples, a breathtaking sunset that signaled the end of the day's reprieve, the air cooled, carrying the scent of damp earth and the distant hint of smoke from candles and lanterns being lit, the city's narrow streets, once deserted and silent, came alive with the soft murmur of vampires emerging from their daytime slumber, they stretched and yawned, their movements languid and graceful as they shook off the torpor of the day, the buildings, once stark and imposing, now seemed to glow with a warm, golden light, as if the setting sun had infused them with a mystical energy, the windows, once dark and empty, now shone like polished rubies, casting a reddish glow over the cobblestone streets, In the grand squares, the sound of fountains and soft music filled the air, mingling with the sweet scent of blood and the distant thrum of a lone violin. The vampires gathered, their faces aglow with an otherworldly beauty, their eyes gleaming with an inner light as they indulged in the pleasures of the evening. In a corner, behind the flower bushes surrounding the area, a tall man with lean and perfect body build stood, silently sipping red liquid from his glass cup as his blue eyes looked in the distance at nothing in particular, his face cold and expressionless and his hand toyed with a little cube, his body felt very restless and he was trying his best to be calm, suddenly he stood frozen, his senses heightened, as the sweet scent of buttercups enveloped him, he knew she was close, his mate, the one he had been searching for centuries, he could feel her presence, like a gentle hum in the background, calling to him, but as he scanned the area, he realized she was hidden from view, he followed the scent to a nearby bush, its leaves rustling softly in the breeze, he peered behind the bush and he saw her, she lay sleeping, her chest rising and falling in a gentle rhythm, her golden hair spread out around her like a halo, he felt a pang in his chest, a mix of longing and tenderness, as he gazed at her peaceful form, he knew he should leave her be, let her sleep, but his body seemed rooted to the spot, he couldn't tear his eyes away from her, couldn't resist the pull of her presence, he bent to remove the leaves on her body and he was suddenly attacked by a restless owl, he frowned in irritation grabbing the owl by its neck and in the next moment he was hit by a powerful surge, pushing him back a bit but he didn't let the owl go, instead he held the owl by its wings clipping them together, "a lythrix" he scoffed "you dare try to prevent me from touching my mate, whose pet are you?" he asked his voice cold, the owl trembled in fear, just then the man got flung away by a more powerful force and the owl dropped from his hand injuring itself, the girl who had being sleeping just now was floating in the air, her golden hair floating behind her and her green eyes staring deeply at the man in anger "you damned creature how dare you lay your filthy hands on my person" she yelled her voice dripping with venom but the man didn't feel intimidated at all, he picked himself up his gaze filled with amusement, a witch, his mate turned out a witch and she was sleeping peacefully in the city of vampires, not even that, she could easily push him off his feet. "I am sorry, I didn't know it was yours,..., I was just fascinated by your scent....You turned out to be my mate...By the way my name is Adrian" he said awkwardly and the girl looked at him in disgust, she landed on her two feets and walked to him then scanned him "you?, a vampire?, my mate?, nonsense" she said in disgust, turned away and picked the wounded owl then disappeared without waiting to hear another word, the man looked in the distance fascinated then he suddenly frowned, what was a witch doing in a city of vampires, had she come to poison them, his face turned horror at the thought and he sped to the grand square but everything was fine, "hey Adrian, where have you being, I have been looking everywhere for you" a voice cried and another man in wine coloured suit came in sight, "I didn't like the crowd so I stepped away" the man named Adrian muttered "have you noticed anything wrong around here?" he asked "no, everything is fine, did you notice something?" the man asked back "no, no I was just asking" Adrian muttered as turned to face the man in wine coloured suit and he frowned "Caleb, you went into my room again?" he asked and the man smiled excitedly "yes, and I found this gold bracelet you just made, look how it fits me perfectly" he said waving his hand to show how beautiful the bracelet looks, "you now owe me thirteen thousand gold coin" Adrian said and walked away, Caleb immediately followed after him "how did that happen, I took one ring last month, two necklaces, a nose ring for my parrot, a diamond ear stud, three hair clips for my sister, a...., wow! I have indeed taken a lot of things" Caleb said and sighed in frustration "I would pay you when you visit my home" he said pitifully and Adrian ignored him as he strolled to another coner away from the crowd, hoping his just found mate would come back.
