Mia held her breath, feeling as if the darkness of the cabinet was suffocating her. Tears began to spill down her cheeks as she accepted that they would be found. The footsteps outside had stopped right in front of where they were hiding.
The air was thick with tension, the silence almost deafening.
Just as Mia was sure they would be discovered, a loud bang echoed from a distance. The man outside the cabinet hesitated, then walked away, his footsteps walking towards the bang.
Mia and Andrew waited a few more moments, listening intently to make sure that the men were truly gone. When they finally felt safe, they breathed a collective sigh of relief.
"Hey, hey, we're okay," Andrew whispered, wiping away Mia's tears. He pulled her close, and she felt the warmth of his embrace envelop her.
