The officers spread out as they entered the sitting room, their flashlights cutting through the dim light. The room was in disarray, with furniture overturned and items scattered. The signs of a violent struggle were evident. Chief Harris's gaze fell on the lifeless body sprawled in the middle of the room.
"Clear!" Officer Collins shouted from one end of the room, as he checked for any potential threats.
Harris moved closer to the body, examining it closely. "Damn it," he muttered under his breath. "This is one of his victims. We're too late."
Detective Larson approached with a grim expression. "No sign of the suspect here. He's probably long gone."
Harris glanced around the room, his frustration growing. "Check the perimeter. Make sure we didn't miss anything. He might have left behind some evidence."
