Chereads / Destined To Be Heiress / Chapter 23 - “The Heart Tree"

Chapter 23 - “The Heart Tree"

After what felt like hours of walking, they came to a clearing. In the centre of the clearing stood an ancient, gnarled tree, its branches twisted and tangled in a way that seemed almost... deliberate.

"This is the Heart tree," the Keeper said, his voice full of reverence.

"Here, the secrets of the box will be revealed to you."

Elia approached the tree cautiously, feeling a strange energy emanating from it. As she reached out to touch its trunk, the tree began to glow with a soft, pulsing light.

The Keeper placed his hand on her shoulder.

"Close your eyes," he whispered.

"And listen to the whispers of the tree."

Elia did as he bid, and as she listened, she felt a sudden flood of visions and images pour into her mind. She saw ancient civilizations rise and fall, great battles fought and won, and powerful magic wielded by those who had come before.

But amidst all this chaos, she saw a single figure - a young woman with long, flowing hair and piercing green eyes. The woman was surrounded by a halo of light, and Elia felt a deep sense of connection to her.

The Keeper's voice broke into her thoughts.

 "This is Arianna," he said.

"The one who created the box and bound its power to this world."

Elia's eyes snapped open.

 "Who is she?" she asked.

The Keeper's expression turned serious.

"Arianna was a powerful sorceress who sought to use the box's power to bring balance to a world torn apart by war and darkness. But as she delved deeper into its secrets, she became consumed by its power... and disappeared into its depths."

Elia's heart skipped a beat.

"Is she still alive?" she asked.

The Keeper's eyes seemed to hold a hint of sadness.

 "I fear not," he said.

"But her spirit remains tied to the box, waiting for one worthy to unlock its secrets and continue her work."

Elia felt a surge of determination. She would unlock the secrets of the box and complete Arianna's work. But as she turned to face the Keeper, she saw that he was no longer there.

Instead, she found herself face to face with her younger self.

Elia's eyes widened in shock as she stared at the younger version of herself. She was standing in the same spot where the Keeper had been just moments before, but now she was alone with her younger self. The air was thick with an eerie silence, as if time itself had become tangled.

The younger Elia looked up at her with a mix of confusion and curiosity. "Who are you?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Elia felt a pang of nostalgia wash over her. She remembered this version of herself, full of energy and idealism, eager to change the world. But now, she stood before her older self, wiser and worn.

"I'm... I'm you," Elia said, trying to make sense of the situation. "Or at least, I'm a version of you from the future."

The younger Elia's eyes lit up with wonder. "What do you mean? What's going on?"

Elia took a deep breath, trying to process the situation. "I've travelled back in time, or... or something. I don't know how it happened or why. But I'm here to tell you something important."

The younger Elia leaned forward, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "Tell me what it is!"

Elia hesitated, unsure of how to begin. But something about the younger Elia's eagerness drew her in. She took a step closer and began to speak, telling her younger self about Arianna's work, about the box, and about the secrets that lay within.

As she spoke, the younger Elia's eyes grew wider with understanding. She listened intently, absorbing every word like a sponge. Elia saw herself in her younger self – the same drive, the same passion for discovery.

When Elia finished speaking, the younger Elia looked up at her with a determined glint in her eye. "I'll help you," she said. "We'll unlock the secrets together."

Elia smiled, feeling a sense of wonder and gratitude. She reached out and took her younger self's hand, feeling a strange connection form between them.

Together, they turned back to face the box, its secrets waiting to be unlocked. And as they approached it, Elia felt a strange sensation – as if time itself was bending and warping around them.

Elia approached the box, her heart pounding with anticipation. As she reached out to touch its intricately carved lid, she felt an unexpected jolt of electricity run through her fingers. The box seemed to hum with an otherworldly energy, as if warning her that she was not prepared for what lay within.

With Elia and her younger self's hands clasped together, they lifted the lid of the box, revealing a world of wonder and discovery that neither of them could have ever imagined.

Undeterred, Elia lifted the lid, and a puff of misty smoke wafted out. As the smoke cleared, she saw a small, ornate book lying open on a bed of crimson velvet. The pages were filled with ancient symbols and diagrams, written in a language she couldn't understand.

Suddenly, the air was filled with the sweet scent of lavender and rose petals. Elia's eyes scanned the room, searching for the source of the fragrance. That was when she saw her – Arianna's ghostly form standing beside her, her eyes fixed intently on the book.

"Arianna?" Elia whispered, her voice barely audible.

The ghostly figure nodded, and Elia felt a strange connection forming between them. It was as if Arianna was guiding her towards the secrets hidden within the book.

Without hesitation, Elia opened her mind and heart to Arianna's whispers. The symbols began to make sense to her, revealing a tale of an ancient civilization that had harnessed the power of the elements. They had built magnificent structures that defied gravity and harnessed the wind, water, and fire to sustain their city.

As Elia delved deeper into the book, she discovered that Arianna had been working on a groundbreaking discovery – a way to harness the power of the elements to create sustainable energy for all humanity. But something had gone terribly wrong, and Arianna's work had been left unfinished.
