Chereads / Destined To Be Heiress / Chapter 20 - "pay the price"

Chapter 20 - "pay the price"

Ezra sighed heavily.

"The box is enchanted with a powerful spell. It will grant you wishes, reveal hidden truths, and manipulate time... but it comes at a terrible cost. Every time you use it, a piece of your soul will fade away. And if you continue using it, eventually you'll be left with nothing but an empty shell of who you once were."

The words sent a chill down Elia's spine. She looked at Lina and Xia, and saw the same horror reflected in their eyes.

"We don't have to use it," Elia said firmly. "We can find another way."

Ezra nodded grimly.

"I hope so. Because once you start down this path, there's no turning back."

Elia's determination hardened, and she felt a sense of resolve wash over her. She glanced at Lina and Xia, and saw the same determination reflected in their eyes.

"We need to get out of here,"

Elia said, her voice firm.

"We can't let the box control us. We'll find another way to uncover the truth."

The three friends quickly gathered their things and left the café, leaving Ezra behind. As they walked back through the winding streets, they couldn't shake off the feeling that they were being watched.

Once they reached the edge of town, they stopped to look back at the buildings. The windmill stood tall and imposing, its sails creaking gently in the breeze. Elia felt an inexplicable pull towards it, as if it was beckoning them to come closer.

"Guys, I think we need to go back to the windmill,"

Elia said, her voice barely above a whisper.

"We need to find another way to uncover the truth.""Guys, I think we need to figure out what Ezra meant by that,

" Elia said, her voice laced with concern.

"What kind of price are we supposed to pay?"

Lina's brow furrowed.

"I don't know, but I think it's connected to the magic in the box. Maybe we need to be careful about how we use it."

Xia nodded.

"Yeah, and maybe we should try to find Ezra before we do anything else. He's the only one who can explain what's going on."

The three friends decided to search for Ezra, scouring the streets of the town until they finally found him in a small, dimly lit café on the outskirts of town. He was sitting at a table, sipping a cup of coffee and staring into space.

"Ezra!"

Elia exclaimed, rushing over to his table.

"What's going on? Why did you leave us like that?"

Ezra looked up, his eyes clouded with a mix of sadness and determination.

"I had to leave," he said quietly.

"The price of magic is not just gold or treasures; it's something far more precious. And I'm not sure I'm willing to pay for it."

Elia's eyes widened in alarm.

"What do you mean? What's the price?"

Lina and Xia nodded in agreement, and they set off towards the windmill once more. As they approached the entrance, they noticed something strange. The door was slightly ajar, as if someone or something had recently passed through it.

Suddenly, a faint light flickered in the distance, casting eerie shadows on the ground. The air grew thick with an otherworldly energy, and Elia felt a shiver run down her spine.

As they cautiously approached the windmill, the light grew brighter, illuminating the cobweb-covered windows and creaky door. Elia's heart raced with a mix of excitement and fear. What was going on? Who or what was causing this strange energy?

As they pushed open the creaky door, a warm, golden glow enveloped them, like a gentle hug from an old friend. The air inside was thick with the scent of old books and parchment, and the sound of whispering voices carried on the wind.

Lina and Xia exchanged a nervous glance, but Elia felt drawn to the light, her feet moving forward without hesitation. She stepped into the windmill, her eyes adjusting to the dim interior. The room was filled with shelves upon shelves of ancient tomes, their leather-bound covers adorned with strange symbols and markings.

In the centre of the room, a glowing orb pulsed with an ethereal energy, casting a warm glow over the surroundings. Elia felt an inexplicable connection to it, as if it was calling to her.

Suddenly, a figure emerged from the shadows. It was an old man with wild white hair and piercing blue eyes that seemed to see right through Elia's soul.

"Welcome, young one,"

he said in a raspy voice.

"I have been waiting for you. You seek the truth about the box and its secrets?"

Elia nodded, her heart pounding in her chest.

"I can help you,"

the old man continued.

"But first, you must prove your worthiness. Are you willing to pay the price?"

Elia swallowed hard, her mind racing with questions.

What did the old man mean by "pay the price"?

Was it a physical cost, an emotional one, or something else entirely?

She glanced at Lina and Xia, who seemed just as uncertain.

But Elia's curiosity and determination got the better of her. She nodded again, her voice firm.

"I'm willing to do whatever it takes to uncover the truth."

The old man's eyes seemed to bore into her soul, as if searching for any hint of doubt or weakness. After a long moment, he nodded, his expression unreadable.

"Very well," he said.

"The price is this: you must retrieve a rare and precious artefact from the depths of the Shadowlands. It is a treacherous journey, fraught with danger and uncertainty. Are you still willing to pay the price?"

Elia felt a shiver run down her spine as she gazed into the old man's eyes. The Shadowlands was a place of dark legend, where the living were said to be consumed by the very darkness that dwelled within.

But Elia was determined to uncover the truth. She took a deep breath and nodded once more.

"I'm willing to take that risk,"

 she said, her voice steady.

The old man nodded, a hint of a smile playing on his lips.

"I thought as much," he said.

"Then let us begin. The journey to the Shadowlands begins at dawn."

As he spoke, the room began to fade away, replaced by a dark and foreboding landscape. Elia felt herself being pulled towards it, her heart pounding in her chest.

"To be continued

Stay tuned"
