Chereads / The Heartbeat Of A Monster / Chapter 5 - Constantine

Chapter 5 - Constantine

"Lord, Lord Constantine is at the door with his wife waiting to see you."

Damon turned away from the window and the early morning view of the mountains and trees below them to face one of their workers.

"Lord… Constantine?"

It was a surprise and been so long since he's seen his friend. He is the redeemed angel friend he knows that rarely visits anybody. Especially him. How they are still close friends still blows Damon's mind once in a while. He put up a smile as the front door was opened to reveal a black limo with Constantine and his heartbeat now made wife waiting patiently by it. Damon noticed how Constantine would carefully stroke his wife's cheeks with love and ask her several times if she was fine. He would place his mouth on the back of her hands and kiss it gently, attempting to tease the blonde-haired human. He is the romantic kind and a lover.

His heartbeat must be so lucky and proud.

Damon reached the bottom of the stairs in no time, still maintaining the smile on his face as Constantine pulled him into a tight hug and pat his shoulders, staring at him with a proud smile of his own.

"The last time I saw you, you still had your horns and now, I bet your wings are beaming with angelic light, am I right?"

Damon chuckled. "You certainly are. What brings you here, this early in the morning? You could have settled in than wait here in the cold." Damon asked, straight to the point.

Constantine waved it off as no big deal before giving his hands to his human bride and pulling her close to him, to greet Damon.

Her eyes were almost reddish. The first thing Damon noticed as he took a full look of her appearance. She was gorgeous too.

Constantine must have felt like the luckiest redeemed fallen angel in the world to have her by his side. She gave him a smile, more like a smirk. Damon was a bit fazed but blinked it as nothing and returned her smile with a more polite one.

"My darling, Veronica would like to stay here for three months until I return. I don't know if it is okay by you."

That was unexpected. Damon turned to look at their massive house behind him before turning to them again and asking just to be certain he heard him right. "Here?"

"I am so sorry if it is coming as such an inconvenience. But there is no other redeemed demon friend I could trust with my wife apart from you Damon. It is only a three month journey. I will be back for her before you know it."

Damon parted his lips slightly before folding his hands behind him. "The problem is that I am not really the owner of this house. It belongs to my brother. I can't really let anyone in or out without his permission. And he is someone who truly values his privacy a lot. He hasn't gotten over all his demons yet, I'm sorry."

Constantine was a bit disappointed. It was so clear on his rugged face. "Should I speak to him then?"

"You know he only talks to me and no one else. I am the only one he trusts and doesn't make him uncomfortable."

Constantine shook his head, rolling his eyes at the mentally ill demon that is yet to be redeemed after so many trials.

"Please, just help me this once. Please. I rarely ask you for any favors. Her safety is my top concern and being with you, safe under your watch would do a lot to make my journey less antsy."

Damon looked at her when he felt she wouldn't stop staring at him, and he instantly had a bad feeling about his wife. But what could he say to a love struck demon lord that would make him past her pretty looks?

"Where on earth are you even going to that she can't come with you?"

Constantine straightened his back and suit jacket. "Not on earth my dear friend, I am going to heaven. I am being summoned by Archangel Michael for a meeting with the other angels concerning these natural disasters happening in the state I am in charge off. It's a talk on how sinful the humans I am governing over are, and it is triggering a lot of misfortune such as the constant floods we have been having. She is a human, she won't be allowed in heaven. You have to help with this please, I promise to do you something huge in return."

It is not about the stay that is the problem. But the person staying over he is not too cool with. He could still feel her almost reddish eyes shamelessly eyeing him from head to toe. Rayven wouldn't approve of such a person in his house. Especially if she is a human.

Damon sighed, not liking any of this at all. He should have just pretended he was not in. He has no clue how to make his sick brother understand and adjust to another living soul living under the same roof as him apart from him, his heartbeat and workers.

"What exactly do you want me to do, Constantine?"

"I want you to help me. Help me accommodate my wife until I'm back from heaven. Your insane…" Constantine took a moment to clear his throat and rephrased his words. "I mean, your brother doesn't really have to know that she is here. It is a big house, and Veronica is usually the well-behaved and minding her business type of human."

Is she?

Damon spared her another look.

"She would stay where you put her and obey every of your words, right darling?"

She snaked her arms around his neck, kissing him on the lips as her way of saying yes, or is it a no? Damon couldn't tell.

"See? She is a good girl."

I doubt that.

Damon refused the urge to scoff.

"Please. Help a friend in need."

The pleadings were getting too much. Causing Damon to stare at his designer shoes in thought. Making his brother comfortable and protecting him from all harm should be his top priority. He shouldn't let anyone trigger any unnecessary fear or paranoia into him again. He has already endured so much. No one should make things worse for him.

Damon's eyes narrowed at Veronica's sneaky ones. Her intentions were made bare to him in them, but he shouldn't be too quick to judge, should he? That is not his style.

"Fine. She can stay. But I can have her thrown out of this place if you are not back from heaven to pick her up like you promised or…" His eyes darkened on her causing the smile to drain from her face. "She oversteps her boundary. My brother is off-limits. He is very unstable currently should I warn you. Don't go looking for him or his trouble. The moment she makes a mistake, I am sending her to a hotel."

Constantine laughed, moving to pat Damon on his shoulders. "Believe me, she might look naughty, but she is very well-behaved. She wouldn't cause you any problems. I swear on Mammon."

Damon didn't smile. Constantine pressed his lips together before smiling again. "If you don't trust her, trust me. You have my word. You wouldn't even know she is here."

Damon finally loosened up a bit before throwing the weird girl, Veronica, another glance. Something about her doesn't really feel human. But anyway, Damon nodded.

"Beautiful! Aren't we all a big family now? The loving house of Lucifer would be so envious, wouldn't they?"

Damon shrugged. "I don't know."

Constantine never failed to give him another smile before ordering Veronica's luggage to be taken out of the car and to where she would be staying. One of the workers asked Damon where that will be exactly before they all marched up the stairs with Veronica's bags and boxes. It didn't feel like a three-month stay. It felt like she was moving in.

After having to endure their passionate goodbye kiss, he gave him one final wave of appreciation before entering the limo and disappearing out of their compound and down the road.

Damon stood at the top of a stair, this time watching this human cry and say tearful goodbyes to her demon lover. When Damon has had enough of her acting because it was so obvious it wasn't genuine, "Come with me and let's have a chat along the way how we could all live peacefully in this house."
