Alex followed Mike out of the cafeteria hall because he had stood absentmindedly for a while. The halls weren't as filled with students as they were right after or right before lunch.
"What do you have this hour?" Alex asked Mike as they walked side by side.
"Oh," Mike exclaimed, startled for a moment, and then turned towards Alex.
"I've got biology."
Alex nodded and then asked him.
"What's got you so deep in thought?"
Mike's eyes opened wider as he turned to face Alex again and asked in a bewildered tone.
"How did you know?"
'What do you mean, Mike? How did I know? You literally got startled when I asked what class you have this hour,' Alex thought, shaking his head lightly at his friend.
"Well, what's up?" Alex said, deciding not to answer Mike's question at all.
Mike didn't talk for a few moments, but he turned to look ahead of him as he walked.
"You know I like Jessica, right? But it just doesn't look like it's ever going to be a thing, not with how she keeps looking at the Cullens as if they're some god-sent deities or something," Mike said, his voice low as he walked.
Alex looked at the man momentarily and then slapped his forehead loudly.
Mike turned to look at Alex, confused as he asked, his voice clearly showing his surprise.
"What?"
Alex huffed as he put his arm around Mike's shoulder.
"Mike, my guy, Jess likes you. She might have looked at the Cullens and thought it would be cool to be with them as they were the most famous people in the school, but after they rejected her, she just gave up. She had no feelings for them. She actually likes you, Mike. I've seen how she looks at you," Alex said as he tried to bring up Mike's mood.
'I know that they had a brief relationship after the prom, but that is in the future. I honestly don't even know if she likes you right now, Mike, but being confident is better than not, right?' Alex thought as he nodded his head, trying to make his words to Mike more logical in his own head.
Mike stood silent for a few moments and then said, his voice still clouded from what Alex thought was sadness. However, it was complicated to say exactly what emotion it was.
"I don't know, Alex. Thanks for trying to cheer me up, however," Mike said as he smiled and raised his fist for a fist bump.
Alex smiled and met the fist with his own.
"Look, man, I still think Jess likes you, but even if she doesn't, I'll always be here if you need to open up or just go play some basketball or something, maybe even go watch some movie and get a few drinks," Alex said as he patted Mike's back.
"Thanks, Alex," Mike said as he smiled and patted Alex's back just like he had done to his.
"Of course, anytime," Alex said as he walked with Mike until the bell rang, that is.
"Uhm, is that the first or second bell, Mike?" Alex asked as he froze suddenly.
Mike turned to look at Alex as he laughed at Alex's stumped expression.
"Afraid it's the second Alex," Mike said, a grin on his face.
Alex's shoulders slumped as he sighed audibly.
"Well, it seems like I won't be going to class then. What about you, Mike?" Alex said as he faced Mike.
"I would love to keep you company, Alex, but I really have to go. See you later!" Mike said as he waved his hand.
"All right, see you later, Mike!" Alex said as he waved his hand and turned to walk towards the outside of the school.
'Dumb math teacher says that im not allowed to come in if im behind the second ring of the bell, ' Alex thought in annoyance as he opened the school's front doors and went outside.
Looking around, he quickly found some wooden benches where he could sit.
'I used to skip class almost every day when I was in school. Now that I think about those times, it's not something to be proud of. I wish I had more time to have fun and joke around with my friends instead of running away so much,' Alex thought as he remembered his past life.
His expression took on a sad undertone. It was doubtful if anyone could even notice it if they looked at him, however.
"Hey, what got you in such a slump?" A voice was heard as someone sat on the bench next to Alex.
Alex turned his head, startled that someone could possibly sneak up on him.
'I should be able to even hear their heart beating. It should be impossible for them to sneak up on me,' Alex thought, at least until he saw who had talked to him.
Seated right next to him was Alice Cullen.
'I see, no, I don't. How the hell did she walk so quietly? Is she a cat or something? And most importantly, what's she doing here?' Alex thought as he looked at Alice for a few seconds, no words leaving his mouth as he remained startled.
"What's wrong? You decided to become mute, or did a cat eat your tongue?" Alice said, her expression showcasing her everpresent smile, though Alex thought it looked more mischievous than happy at the moment.
"No, I'm just wondering what you're doing out here and not in class. You shouldn't be with some hooligan who skips classes now, should you?" Alex asked, his expression also turning into the same mischievous smile.
Alice looked at Alex for a moment, made a thinking pose, put her index finger on her chin, and then acted as if she suddenly had found the answer.
"Ah, what if I'm the hooligan, though? You're the son of the police chief. Shouldn't you follow his example and uphold the rules?" Alice asked, her voice making it sound as if she were some innocent child asking an obvious question.
Alex's brow started twitching as he looked at her.
'Life is unfair. How can you make an expression like that when you're hundreds of years old."
