A while later, the bell rang, and Alex went inside the school once more and headed towards his next class.
He remained silent as the hours passed. It seemed like he didn't have a class with any of his friends for the rest of the day.
The final ring of the bell for the week sounded as the students grabbed their backpacks and headed outside, happy for the weekend.
Walking outside the classroom, Alex headed towards the school's main hall to wait for Bella.
It didn't take long for him to see her coming with Jessica and Angela by her side.
"Hey, girls," Alex said as he waved at them.
Jessica turned to face Alex as she tried to make herself look as cute as she could and waved hello.
'Just stop, please,' Alex thought as he barely held back the look of disgust on his face.
"Hey Alex," Angela said, and she waved at him, a shy smile on her face.
'Truly fitting of her name. She is an angel from heaven when compared to her best friend,' Alex thought as he nodded and then waited as Bella said her goodbyes.
Finally, after what looked like a lot of unnecessary hugging to Alex, Bella came next to him, and they walked out of the school toward their old Truck.
"Anything fun happened?" Alex asked Bella as he threw her the keys to the Truck.
Bella tried to catch them only to fail as they ended up on a puddle on the ground.
Alex and Bella stood frozen for a second, and then Alex crouched down, took the keys wordlessly, and cleaned them up with the underside of his shirt.
And offered them to Bella to grab this time instead of throwing them away.
"Thanks," Bella said as she entered the Truck and sat in the driver's seat.
Alex nodded as he did the same and sat on the front passenger seat.
Turning towards Bella once more, Alex asked.
"So, anything happened?"
Bella nodded as she turned to him, her face showing a smile, though Alex didn't like it one bit.
'That smile is bad news for sure,' Alex thought to himself.
"So there's this rumor going around," Bella said as she made her voice sickeningly sweet.
Alex froze and then mechanically turned to face the front.
"I don't wanna hear it," Alex said, his voice just as robotic as his movement.
"Oh? You do not want to hear it? I guess Charlie can listen to me since you do not want to," Bella said as she hummed under her breath.
Alex turned to face Bella immediately. He nodded his neck quickly as if he were a pigeon taking crumbs off the ground.
"Of course I want to hear you, Bella. Tell me," Alex said as he almost jumbled his words.
Bella nodded her expression, the same mischievous one that Alex had held so often.
Alex stared at her for a moment and grinned slightly.
'I guess she is my sister, huh?'
"So there's this rumor going around about you and this Alice girl, you know?" Bella said as she reversed the Truck out of the parking lot.
"Alice? That's just a friend of mine. We're not like what those people think we are," Alex said as he tried to explain himself, his hands waving around in nonsensical movements as if that would help him.
"Right, but they say that this Alex girl called you when we were in lunch, and I can confirm after you told us, but they say you two were even standing so close to each other as you looked into each other's eyes," Bella said. As each word was spoken, the harder it looked like she was trying to hold back her laughter.
Alex momentarily looked like he had given up on life as he released an exaggerated sigh.
"We got found out so quickly. It's true, Bells. She and I have been together for years, but Charlie and her parents have never allowed us to be together. We actually have this family feud between us, but me and Charlie never told you," Alex said as he infused his voice with as much sadness as he could, closing his eyes and swiping his finger under his eyes as if he were clearing his tears away.
*Pfft*
Bella couldn't hold it in anymore as he burst out laughing.
"Stop, please stop. I can't, I can't anymore," Bella said as she barely managed to utter the words amid the guffaws of laughter.
Turning the steering wheel, Bella finally took the Truck onto the road, and they started driving home.
"But Bells, it's crucial that you know. What if they do something to you because they can't stand seeing me and Alice? Now both families know that we are together," Alex said as he turned to look at Bella, his expression concerned.
"Ah, stop, stop. I'll stay away from them, Romeo. Don't worry about me, and just have fun with your Juliet," Bella said as she finally got her bursts of laughter under control.
*Sigh*
"Thank God. I at least know that you can avoid them and keep yourself as safe as possible now," Alex said as he looked out the window.
Bella sighed and pushed the pedal to make the Truck go faster. However, all it did was make a louder rumble as its body shook more.
"You overused the joke. It was funny, though," Bella said as she turned around a corner.
"Damn, I still have room for improvement," Alex said as he nodded, and silence took over in the car once more.
Unlike the past week, however, the silence was pleasant. The only sounds were the slow rumble of the old Truck and the sound of wheels on soaked asphalt.
The ride didn't take long, and they arrived at their house quickly. It was just on the periphery of Forks.
"It's a nice house," Alex said, more to himself than to Bella.
"Yeah, it's nice that Charlie saved our rooms as they were, too," Bella replied.
"Yeah"
