Chapter 58 - The Reconsideration

The palace of the king at Carthage under the Ptolemaic Kingdom is gradually turning into a mourning ground as its citizens are yet to hear if the king will listen to their plea so as to find much more measurable punishment to be imposed on the princess who was impregnated by the son of Nana Oppong, who has been serving as the 1st elder of the kingdom, and also not to execute Akinidad who's ambitious mother forcefully made her live the life of a man just for her quest in attaining the throne for her supposed son, and later joining the ancestors without giving him any respite of any sort.

As the king, together with the elders and the villagers watched by while the executioner takes along with him the princess, his niece and his elder, he starts to speak out to himself.

King: Oh Calamity! Calamity!!

Why thou dost descend on me in torments? Lying breathless in the women's quarters is the lifeless remains of a one-time living symbol of the Kingdoms Courage. Oh Amanirenas, Yaa Serwaa Amanirenas! My loving sister Amanirenas…

And there like two cows being gently to the abattoir, a niece and a daughter. They go with the executioner most willingly. One harbours in her womb a grandchild condemned before its birth, and with her death two people in one flesh are lost.

With Akinidad gone, I see a vacant stool when I am invited to the land of the ancestors. In just one day… and by one stroke of custom, a daughter, a niece and a grandchild yet unborn, all gone in a flash. Of what worth is my life? When the custodian of the people custom become innocent victims of the custom they have in their custody. Life under this colourful umbrella pales into nothingness. (Turns to his umbrella bearers) Take away from me this colourful but deceitful shelter, and let the sky see and hear me groan. Let the spirits of the departed see my tears freely flow.

The umbrella which has been raised above the king is folded and carried away by two people as it were a corpse being sent to the cemetery. The king then moves away slowly as he continues to moan. He stops, leaving his elders and the people to wonder what he is going to do next. He looks at the throne, his gold ornaments, his people and back at his throne. He slowly raises his hands to his head and removes his crown. Before he could deposit it on the ground, one of the elders quickly grabs it. The crowd rushed towards their king who by now is slowly stripping himself of all the gold ornaments. He tries to step out of his sandals but is prevented by the elders. He tries to sit on the ground, but more people rush to prevent him from doing so. It has become obvious as at now that the king intends to abdicate.

2nd Elder: (Kneeling down and holding firmly unto the legs of his Highness) We made you king over us your Highness. We made you king out of your competence and good governance.

King: (Shakingly responds) No, you did not.

Crowd: Yes, we did!

2nd Elder: We have always loved you as our leaders and that is never changing no matter what. We love you as our leader.

King: (Sadly replies) That is not so.

Crowd: That is so, O King!

2nd Elder: We shall not allow you to become a slave to customs and traditions of men, for men make customs and tradition.

King: Is it not the custom that made me King?

Crowd: No! It is we the people that made you king.!

2nd Elder: Emissary, who made the customs?

Emissary: We the people, made the customs

Crowd: Yes, we made the customs, and we made you king!

Emissary: (To the crowd) If it is so, as we all claim that we made the customs, then the same people can unmake the custom

Crowd: (In total agreement) Yes!

2nd Elder: Emissary, tell the executioner the people say he should halt the killings!

Crowd: (Shouting repeatedly to no one in particular)

Tell the executioner to halt the killing!...

Tell the executioner to halt the killing…

Tell the executioner to halt the killings…

The guards dash out as the crowd keep chanting the message over and over and over again. After a while, the chanting stops. Everything becomes very quiet. The guards return with the princess, Akinidad and Nana Oppong. They look quiet surprise. The king spreads his arms wide open and steps forward. The two girls run to him, and he hugs them. Nana Oppong comes forward and kneels before the king. the crowd cheer happily. The drums beat with different rhythms. The umbrella is unfurled Nd raised once again. There comes a massive jubilation the people rejoice with their king on the reunion with his two children.

The princess and her cousin, Akinidad has been forgiven and given respite from the punishment imposed upon them. They are now eligible to start with a new life and continue with their lives. The princess would have to be taken to a place a bit far from the Kingdom where she can live and deliver her baby when the time is due, as the guards are given the responsibility of the capture of Hakeemi, who has gotten the princess in the family way and is believed to be on the run. Nana Oppong, father to Hakeemi, is also stripped off his position as an elder among the ministers of the king and will be banned from the Kingdom if Hakeemi is not found and brought to justice.

The whole kingdom has become a place of celebration as they have all decided to see into what goes into the custom and what does not. At this point, it is not clear if Akinidad or the princess will be the one to take over the throne when the king joins his ancestors when the time is due.

Time has passed by and the princess has finally been laid to labour and has given birth to a baby boy, which makes the heart of the king very happy, yet he may not have the right to be any closer to the throne, since he is born out of wedlock and the supposed father could not be found neither close nor far away from the Kingdom. The princess has finally been brought back to the kingdom to introduce her newly born child to her father, who is still ruling as king, yet old age has already caught up with him. The king is at this gesture, in a desperate moment as he is expected to get an heir to the throne of the great Kingdom. It will be a great lose if no replacement in the lineage of the king is not found to replace the king as the next in line as ruler of the Ptolemaic Kingdom.

Akinidad, who is finally free to live her life as the woman that she is, has also found love and given birth to a beautiful girl as well. Even though the king is happy to the news of the newly born child of his niece, he gets more curious and worried as he has been waiting to hear a news of any among his daughter giving birth to a baby boy. That would be the only way to save the throne from leaving the lineage of the Linette Family.
