Chapter 134 - Chapter 134: The Road to Penance

The group moved quickly through the darkened streets of Vimana, their footsteps silent as they made their way to a safer location. The air was thick with tension, each member of the group acutely aware of the potential threat from within their ranks. Kalki led the way, his mind racing with thoughts of the ambush and the possibility of a traitor among them.

They found refuge in an abandoned temple on the outskirts of the city. The temple, once a place of worship and peace, now stood in ruins, a stark reminder of the chaos that had engulfed the world. As they settled in, Kalki addressed the group.

"We need to figure out who the traitor is," he said, his voice firm. "But we also need to stay focused on our mission. We can't let this distraction derail us."

Rajan nodded in agreement. "We should interrogate everyone who had access to our plans. No one is above suspicion."

Leela looked around at the group, her eyes lingering on each person. "But we can't turn against each other. If we do, Kali wins. We need to be smart about this."

Arjun, who had been silent since the ambush, spoke up. "We should start by reviewing the events leading up to the attack. There might be clues we've overlooked."

Nisha, still nursing a cut on her arm from the fight, added, "And we need to be prepared for another attack. Kali won't stop until we're all dead."

As they discussed their next steps, Kalki's mind wandered to his family. He thought about his parents, his siblings, and the peaceful life he had once known. He missed the simplicity of those days, but he knew there was no going back. His path was set, and he had to see it through.

Late into the night, the group took turns keeping watch while the others rested. Kalki sat by the entrance of the temple, his eyes scanning the darkness for any signs of danger. He felt a presence beside him and turned to see Arjun.

"Can't sleep?" Arjun asked, sitting down next to him.

Kalki shook his head. "Too much on my mind."

Arjun nodded. "I understand. This fight, it's bigger than any of us. But we have to trust each other, or we won't stand a chance."

Kalki sighed. "I know. It's just hard, knowing someone close to us might be working for Kali."

Arjun placed a hand on Kalki's shoulder. "We'll find the traitor. And when we do, we'll make sure they pay for their betrayal."

The next morning, the group set out early, determined to uncover the truth. They split up, each taking on different tasks to gather information. Kalki and Rajan went to speak with the innkeeper, hoping he might have seen something the night before.

Gaurav, the innkeeper, greeted them nervously. "I don't know much," he said, wringing his hands. "But I did see someone leaving the inn shortly before the attack. They were cloaked, so I couldn't see their face."

"Did you notice anything unusual about them?" Kalki asked.

Gaurav thought for a moment. "They moved quickly, like they were in a hurry. And they dropped this." He handed Kalki a small piece of cloth, torn and dirty.

Kalki examined the cloth. It was a dark, rich fabric, unlike anything his group had been wearing. "Thank you, Gaurav. This might be helpful."

As they left the inn, Rajan spoke. "Whoever the traitor is, they're good at covering their tracks. But we'll find them."

Back at the temple, the group reconvened to share their findings. Leela had spoken with several townspeople who had seen strangers lurking around the inn, but none could provide a clear description. Nisha had checked the surrounding area for any signs of recent activity but found nothing conclusive.

Frustrated but undeterred, Kalki addressed the group. "We need to stay vigilant. The traitor will reveal themselves eventually. Until then, we focus on our mission and protect each other."

That night, as the group settled in for another restless sleep, Kalki couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched. He knew the road ahead would be dangerous, but he was determined to see it through. For his family, for his friends, and for the world that depended on him.
