Chapter 24 - Chapter 24 – Sandworms

Durualp had only caught one sandworm since he had taken on the task. He had tried to feel the worms hiding under the sand, and had paid close attention to the movements of the sand, but he had not found another sandworm. When the thought that he was looking in the wrong place finally settled in his mind, the first location sharing came to his mind.

Since there were three of them, they had divided the sand area into three. Eiderd on the left, Tauriel in the middle, and Durualp on the right. No one could enter the other's territory. When Eiderd completed the task in six days, Tauriel took his territory. In return, she gave half of her territory to Durualp.

Durualp, who had thoroughly explored the newly acquired sand area, became increasingly pessimistic as the days passed. Tauriel caught the last sandworm as of yesterday and completed her task. Now that the entire sand area was left to Durualp, he wanted to know where Tauriel had caught the sandworm. He straightened himself, gathered his thoughts and went to Tauriel with all his courage…

After lunch, Durualp came to the informal education building and entered the classroom and waited for Instructor Sarp to arrive. While looking at the small sand dunes in the distance from the classroom window, he tried to see the place Tauriel had described to him yesterday. There was a very high chance that he would find a sandworm somewhere there. He would feel better if he caught another sandworm.

A while later, when the lesson started, Instructor Sarp came to his classroom. When he looked around and displeasure was reflected on his face, he turned to Durualp and asked calmly,

- Where is the other useless?

- I don't know. But I saw his after lunch when he was heading towards the formal education building.

- The formal building? This girl is up to something again... (He said angrily. He thought for a while and then turned to Durualp and added). You wait a little, I'll be back...

After Instructor Sarp left the classroom, it occurred to Durualp that Demir would also catch a sandworm. (Whatever, my dear, I will give him the places I searched before. Let him search for a while. I will have caught my own ones by the time I realize there are no worms there) he thought. He fell into deep in thought a sly smile reflected on his face.

Time passed and finally Instructor Sarp and Demir came to the classroom. When Instructor Sarp let him go for the task, Durualp ran out of the classroom and disappeared in the sand. After a while, he came to the place Tauriel described. He started to examine the surroundings without rushing…

The mother worm was very nervous today. Small-footed creatures have been wandering around here for the last ten days. There was no problem for the first few days, but in the following days, her children started not coming to the nest.

They grew up and could take care of themselves now. But yesterday, very close to the nest, it heard one of it children shouting "mother". It pulled itself together immediately, warned it little babies in the nest and crawled as fast as a snake to where the sound was coming from, but everything was over by the time the mother worm arrived. There was nothing left except a small hole in the sand.

It looked around a lot, waited a lot, but it efforts were in vain. It bowed it head, no matter how much it heart ached, it had to go now. Since the babies in the nest were small, it couldn't leave them alone for a long time. After walking a little distance, it turned back with one last hope and looked back again, but there was no sign of it child. This child, like the others, had disappeared without a trace.

When it arrived at the nest, it gathered it little babies together. They were born this year, they were very small. They couldn't live without their mother's care. They needed mother's care for at least a year. The mother worm formed a circle completely surrounding her babies. While the babies slept comfortably in this circle, it kept watch against dangers...

Morning came, the sun rose, but the pain in the mother worm's heart increased instead of decreasing. It couldn't leave the nest in this state. It waited a little longer. When the sun was very high, the babies would get a little more active when they warmed up.

It looked at the sky, the sun was high, but for some reason it wasn't that hot. For the last ten days, the temperature has been cooler than normal, so the cubs were not able to move fast enough. There was no difference today either. After warning her children not to leave the nest, the mother worm left her nest to find food...

Durualp came to his target location. After searching for a worm for a while, he came across a strange sand structure a short distance away. This, it was a fluffy sand pile in the middle of a circular sand bed. Curious about what kind of sand structure it was, he moved a little closer.

While observing the sand pile carefully, he noticed that the sand grains were rolling in small pieces. Then, when there was a slight swell in the sand dune, Durualp could no longer stand still and climbed onto the sand pile and started digging the sand with his hand.

As he dug, he found sandworms and soon all the sandworms had appeared. While Durualp took out his catching bag from his pocket, he was counting the worms. "There are seven in total. Finally, my duty is finally over," he shouted.

When he reached out and caught a sandworm, a very high-pitched screaming sound spread from the worm. Durualp, who had never heard such a sound from worm he had caught before, was surprised by the sound, but he did not let go of the worm. As she filled all the worms into the catching bag one by one, the smile on her face was getting more and more wicked…

Although her food was in the moist areas deep in the sand, the mother worm had didn't go very deep and could not collect enough food. It had been constantly coming up to the surface of the sand, fearing that something would happen at any moment.

While it was collecting food, it heart tightened again and it went up to the surface of the sand again to check if there was anything around. At that moment, it heard it baby shouting "mother". It the ache of your heart and it crawling towards baby happened at the same time.

When she came to the hill where her nest was, she saw one of those small-footed catching it babies. When she accelerated her crawling by shouting "Let go of my babies, they are still very small", the small-footed turned and looked at the mother and caught it other baby as if nothing had happened…

While Durualp was putting the sixth worm into her bag, she heard a deep screaming sound from not too far away. When she turned her head towards the sound to see what was happening, a huge sandworm was crawling towards her on the sand hill. After quickly throwing the last worm into his bag, he started running fast, but it was very difficult to run on the sand…

When the mother worm came to it nest, the small-footed had also gone quite a distance. When it checked the nest and saw that none of it babies were left, it world fell apart.

All her anger and rage was towards itself for leaving her babies unprotected. But the small-footed who destroyed it nest and ran away with all it babies definitely deserved to die. When it anger reached its peak and it war cry rose to the sky, it didn't care about anything anymore and chased the small-footed at full speed…

When Durualp heard the strange scream, he wanted to run even faster, but even climbing those small sand dunes was very difficult. As he stepped on the sand, his feet kept slipping and he was sinking deeper. When the sand filled the inside of his shoes, running became very difficult.

Finally, when the possibility of being caught settled in his heart, he said with fear and helplessness. "I'm done… My end has come… I will soon become worm food. Instructor Sarp, I will never forgive you. I will become a ghost and haunt you."

Durualp had spent ten years of his life until he climbed this small hill. Now that he had climbed this hill, he could run faster towards the plain below. But he was startled by the voice coming from behind him. Durualp did not dare to look back and started running.

Just as he was about to reach the plain, fear fell into him and he quickly threw himself to the side. The sand worm could only turn it head against Durualp's sudden change of direction. It could not control the rest of it huge body and started rolling sideways like a log.

Durualp stared at this giant creature rolling in front of him from where he jumped. It was about two meters high and twelve or fifteen meters long. After a while, the sandworm finished rolling and righted itself and unleashed the anger of a mother whose children were taken away from it. When it killing intent reached its peak, Durualp could no longer move…

Just when he thought everything was over, he saw Instructor Sarp quickly jump from the hill he had just landed on towards the sandworm. After a perfect jump, a long sword suddenly appeared in Instructor Sarp's hand as he soared from the sky towards the worm. And immediately, the area around his sword began to tremble red. Just as Instructor Sarp was about to collide with the sandworm, he swung his sword quickly and cut off the worm's head in one move.

When the worm's head rolled to one side and its giant body to the other, Durualp looked at the view in amazement and had never thought Instructor Sarp could be so magnificent.

When his eyes lit up as if he had seen his hero, he relived the scene where Instructor Sarp jumped and killed the sandworm with a single move. Now, since this worm's giant body had no head, it was involuntarily contracting and twisting, writhing and twitching.

Instructor Sarp, who was on guard in case something happened at any moment, waited between the sandworm and Durualp for a while with his sword in his hand. When the worm finally stopped contracting, he shooked the blood off his sword and came to Durualp.

He lifted Duralp from where he was sitting, and then, in the light of Durualp's shining eyes, they set off towards the informal education building…
