Chapter 187: Spirit of Vengeance

____

"This is it!" said Champ, leading Aoki forward.

Aoki's eyes held a flicker of surprise. A luxurious villa stood amid towering walls before him. To his astonishment, the extreme point he had been searching for was right here.

Double the fortune, he thought.

"Come on, let's go meet Lord Syura!" Champ urged, moving ahead.

As they entered the courtyard, a dark-skinned young man with an "X"-shaped scar across his face emerged from the villa, carrying the naked corpse of a woman who bore signs of brutal abuse.

"Lord Syura," Champ greeted respectfully.

Syura tossed the corpse aside, scratching his head as he eyed Aoki. "Champ, who's this?"

"Sir, didn't you mention looking for someone with exceptional strength? He took down over a dozen bandits on his own," Champ explained.

"Oh?" Syura's interest was piqued as he scrutinized Aoki.

Aoki glanced around, sizing up the scene. "Is it just the two of you here? Or are there others?"

"It's just us at the moment," Syura confirmed. "What's your name? What are your abilities?"

"You don't need to know," Aoki replied indifferently.

He sighed inwardly. Only the two of them? Not as much of a bounty as I'd hoped. Yet, the discovery was still a pleasant surprise.

Syura's expression darkened. "What did you say?"

Aoki ignored his reaction and unleashed a mental shockwave that pierced Syura's mind like a spear—Soul Shock.

Boom!

It was as though Syura had been struck with a sledgehammer. His mind went blank, blood seeping from his eyes, nose, and mouth as his body staggered forward.

Aoki swiftly moved, his arm slicing through the air.

Whoosh!

Syura's head flew upward, blood spurting like a fountain as his headless body crashed to the ground.

[You have killed one person and gained 1,400 experience points.]

[Congratulations! You have leveled up.]

[Congratulations! You have leveled up.]

Three consecutive system notifications echoed in his mind.

"You… what did you do?" Champ stammered, his mind struggling to process what had just happened.

"Didn't you see it?" Aoki asked, casually shaking the blood from his hands.

Realization dawned on Champ's face, which turned grim. "You never intended to join us from the start!"

He'd suspected Aoki's motives but hadn't anticipated the sheer extent of his power.

"Right answer, but there's no prize for it."

Aoki's figure blurred, instantly appearing in front of Champ.

Champ's expression shifted as he hastily pulled a bead from his hand.

Whoosh!

A sharp sound split the air as a dark flash streaked past. A cold sensation swept over his wrists, and in an instant, both of his hands were severed. Pain shot through him, and though he opened his mouth to scream, he had no time to utter a sound.

Phew!

A black blade pierced through his heart.

With blood trickling from the corner of his mouth, Champ stared at the tail extending from behind Aoki, disbelief etched across his face.

"How... how is this possible? Who are you?"

"Since you've given me two excellent gifts, I'll grant you a swift end."

Aoki wasted no further words. His tail swung forward, and the razor-sharp bone blade cleaved Champ's body in two.

[You have killed one person and gained 1,100 experience points.]

[Congratulations! You have leveled up.]

[Congratulations! You have leveled up.]

Three system notifications rang out.

Four levels gained in a single encounter.

Aoki opened the system interface.

He now had a total of 16 free attribute points and 4 free skill points. He distributed the attribute points evenly, adding four points to each attribute.

A surge of strength coursed through him, amplifying his energy. This rush of power was familiar, and Aoki remained focused, directing his attention to the skill bar.

With the saved points, he now had 8 free skill points available.

It was time to acquire a new skill.

Without hesitation, he chose to learn Spirit of Vengeance.

Five skill points disappeared, and on the system panel, Spirit of Vengeance illuminated.

That was it.

Aoki felt no immediate difference and received no additional information.

This didn't surprise him.

Spirit of Vengeance was a passive skill with two primary effects. First, after killing a monster, he would receive additional rewards beyond experience, with the reward's quality tied to the skill's level. Second, it provided a chance to trigger bonus quests.

This was a resource-gathering skill unlike any he'd encountered before.

Aoki glanced again at his system panel.

In just a few days, his average attribute had risen from 37 to 44.

Such was the power of a four-star profession.

"Only 2 more skill points to level up Spirit of Vengeance again."

Aoki's eyes gleamed. He had no desire to learn any other skills at the moment, intent on further developing Spirit of Vengeance.

The skill description was clear: the reward quality depended on its level.

That, of course, depended on what lay ahead in the next world.

Closing the system panel, Aoki searched Champ's and Syura's bodies, retrieving two Imperial Weapons: the spatial-manipulation Dimension Matrix, Shambhala and the Ace Solution: Die Leaguer.

Aoki found a cloth nearby and draped it over the woman's lifeless, battered form.

"Rest in peace."

Syura was as twisted and ruthless as Honest, a merciless predator.

Aoki stood, facing east.

He had reached the pinnacle of his King of the White Walkers profession, secured a four-star occupation, and reaped substantial rewards on this journey.

The only downside was his transformation—each step taking him further from humanity.

"It's time to leave."

Aoki withdrew his gaze, raised his hand, and his figure vanished instantly.

In a primeval forest, a woman with porcelain skin, striking features, and flowing blue hair was locked in fierce combat with a large number of dangerous creatures.

With a wave of her hand, a freezing aura spread out, instantly encasing every creature in ice. As the wind blew, the ice shattered into countless shimmering crystals, glinting under the sunlight.

"Haha! Success!"

Excitement lit up Esdeath's beautiful face as she looked toward the direction of the Imperial Capital, a fiery determination in her eyes. "It's time to find him! This time, I will conquer him!"

She had trained relentlessly in this secluded realm, honing her abilities for one purpose: to capture the assassin. And now, after countless battles, she had finally succeeded.

Esdeath mounted a tamed flying dangerous species and left the secret realm, heading straight for the Imperial Capital. Just as she arrived above the city, a flash of silver streaked down from the sky.

Her flying creature met an instant, fatal blow.

Two icy platforms materialized under her feet, supporting her as she gazed upward.

There, a massive, four-winged dragon appeared, with two familiar figures standing atop it.

"Akame, Kurome."

"Esdeath!"

Both Akame and Kurome wore serious expressions.

"So, you're here. It seems the Empire has already fallen."

Esdeath's voice was steady.

With both the minister and the emperor gone, and her own sudden departure, she had expected this outcome.

But now, she didn't care.

Akame slowly drew her sword, Murasame.

"That's right! The Empire has been defeated, Esdeath. I won't allow you to disrupt the new order!"

"Bold words!"

Esdeath's gaze was calm. "Were the assassins who killed the minister and the emperor rebels?"

Akame hesitated, then shook her head. "Aoki and we are only allies."

"So, his name is Aoki."

A glint of excitement flashed in Esdeath's eyes. "Where is he? Bring him out!"

Akame replied, "Aoki has left. No one knows where he went."

"Left?"

Esdeath frowned.

This was the worst possible news for her.

If he had been here, she could have forced him to fight, whether he wanted to or not. But if he had truly left, there was nothing she could do.

"Esdeath, surrender! This isn't your era anymore!" Akame called out.

Esdeath refocused, casting a glance at the four-winged dragon. "Is this a super dangerous species? A corpse controlled by the Yatsufusa?"

"Yes!" Kurome replied.

"Interesting! Since Aoki's not here, I'll amuse myself with you two first!"

Esdeath's lips curved into a smile as she flew toward the four-winged dragon.

Akame leaped forward, swinging her blade.

Kurome raised her weapon, Yatsufusa.

The ground rumbled as massive creatures burst forth, summoned from the earth itself.
