Chapter 6 - The menace behind the mask

"I just don't understand why you don't want to listen to me Gonzo. There's nothing out there but a dead end your better off here where it's safe" His mother said furiously almost as though she was willing to pounce on him at any moment.

Gonzo continued to stare her in the eye knowing instinctively that arguing would prove a fruitless effort so he tactically gave in, lowering his stare towards the ground with his head bowed once again

"I'm sorry mom!" His voice was gentle with hints of remorse hoping to ease his mothers rising tension on the matter as quickly as possible till the whole situation slipped her mind.

Willing to play along his mother's stiffened face slowly loosened and her veins went to rest with the dark ora which previously oozed around her body fading away slowly, Her face reverted back to it's usual glow as she turned towards the opposite direction and trekked, her red dress swayed with her movements rhythmically and her silence spoke volumes to him

Gonzo got the memo loud and clear so he immediately started moving in the same direction with a slower pace than hers.

"I was hoping honesty would be the key to this whole situation however...., She's left me no other choice in the matter I'll have to rely on my last resort. plan B" He muttered underneath his breath. Unknown to him him his mothers sharp gaze had never left him despite the distance between them.

Gonzo quietly stuck to her till they arrived at their destination which was the shop. The area was Serene as always with the only sounds being heard were the melodic chirping of the blue birds.

A flashback occured in his mind of the scenes he witnessed previously in his past life. It was rare to see such peace and calm expecially since most places were being held under seige by the evil forces he fought and so he soaked in as much of the moment he could before being abruptly snapped out of his daze.

"OH! Gonzo before I almost forget I need you to deliver some roses for me" she quickly grabbed a bouquet of them from a wooden box beside the entrance

"The address is attached to the ribbon please deliver it for me" she shun a bright smile on her face as she spoke.

"Alright I'll do it as quickly as possible and get back, it's almost late anyways" Gonzo's face slowly turned red with annoyance with his grin flickering repeatedly on impulse as he gripped onto the bouquet tightly on the verge of squeezing the life out of them .His aim of rest and relaxation before carrying out his back up plan was halted.

"Alright then, Good luck!"

Gonzo grabbed his bike and peddled as though he was being chased, his legs rotated with immense speed only leaving after images to be seen, his bike sped across the leveled grass discharging a large cloud of dust as he sped into the distance.

His mothers gaze never left him still, she stood outside the door and watched him zoom of to the distance neverminding the obscure dust cloud which continued to swirl itself wrapping her in all directions. Her face was expressionless yet she continued to stare at the route which Gonzo had taken without uttering a word or moving an inch from her position.

10 minutes later....

"Demn it!..... This was a bad idea" He peddled his bicycle with strain yet failed to accomplish a reasonable speed. Despite getting enough nights rest his overexerted body still took on the tole of the previous night's events.

Gonzo's tense body could no longer support his own weight, his vision blurred even his eyes flickered between closing shut and staying open not to mention the vibrating bones in his legs spread towards his arms till he lost balance and fell off his bike, lying on the soft grass on the borderline of the villages small forest " I think I should just lie down here for a while"

(Even without all these convenient gadgets and gears my past life was easier than this but now it's like I've grown weaker, could it be this body? Even though my soul was reborn in this era this body must have inherited something from it's parents or... Maybe it's just me who failed to adapt since even my behaviors changed.) Various thoughts formed in his mind

"Come on don't chicken out now!"

"I'm telling you this is a bad idea!"

"Might be so but if we do this we'll be Heroes"

"I still strongly object to this idea!"

"Doesn't matter cuz your coming with us anyways!"

The strange murmuring of what sounded like Three different people snapped him out of his daze once again. Led by his curiosity he followed the voices to their source only to uncover two sword wielder's and one who seemed to be a mage.

The tallest and strongest one seemed like he was the leader of the group wearing a brown T-shirt and a baggie to boot gripping his large sword, the second one wore the same and so did the third except their shirts were of different color.

Gonzo hid behind a bush and observed them quietly. The mage seemed nervous, his body shook as though he were about to totter but his colleagues looked as ignorant as children. They were about to confront a dangerous beast know as a boare.

The monster had long tusks almost the same length as the trees, it's fur grey and ash dazzlingly weaved above each other with it's razor sharp fangs munching on the forest grass paying no attention to the ludicrous group of fools planning on stirring trouble.

A small glimpse of the situation spoke volumes about their intentions to Gonzo "OH I SEE, this might end badly but they seem to know what they're doing so I probably shouldn't interfere" He uttered to himself quietly.

"Alright you know the plan boy's" The one most confident spoke to the others with a heinous grin on his face as he clenched his sword tightly

" Firstly we piss this thing off then when it rampages on a few shops we step in like heroes and kill it then get all the praise and attention from the shop owners!"

"That's such a great idea bro! That's why you're the leader after all" The second yet less confident swordsman replied with a short smirk stretching across his face, crutching on his sword which was heads down.

"I still think this is a bad idea guys" The more reluctant member protested.

"Just stand in as back up mage your advice isn't needed besides if this goes well they might give us food and the whole reason why you concurred with us in the first place was cuz you were hungry right?"

"That was then but now that I think with a calm head this plan will get someone hurt!"

"Don't argue with the boss bro!"

"I don't know when you started acting like a whimp but don't screw with me!" He yelled with a tone full of rage which scared the birds on the trees and attracted the attention on the feeding boare.

Disturbed from it's meal It's focus changed towards the bickering trio who lost consciousness of their surroundings buried in their argument. It's appearance slowly morphed with it's skin colour turning into a blood red and it's sharp tusk's curved it's shape and opposed each other.

"Screeechhh....."

Unable to grap their situation in time the boare charged furiously towards the group hitting them towards the trees at fearsome speed.

The force tossed their bodies like rag dolls in the wind with only an echoing "boom!" Which resounded throughout the forest as a huge dust cloud formed in the aftermath of the impact

The boares appearance was freightning with it's scowl locked on the dust cloud which slowly disintegrated with the winds speed increase, stroking it's left leg on the ground preparing to charge at slightest glimpse of their figure.

Gonzo on the other hand was left in awe at the sight of the unforceen change of events taking place before his very eyes.

"I knew this would end badly" He uttered quietly trying not to obtain the boares attention. There was no sign of movement from within the vanishing dust cloud until suddenly.....

"Level 1 attack magic ⟨current spear⟩"

The air and dust swirled and merged at rapid speeds forming a rod like shape before vanishing quicker than the naked eye could capture.

"Riiip!" Suddenly the boares abdomen tore open and it's blood splurt out in large batches destabilizing the vicious animal as it cried loudly in agony.

The mage stood tall with his stamina in check while his colleagues lied flat on the ground unconscious with blood dripping out their battered bodies possibly the result of a protection spell cast on himself in the nick of time.

"This is a low level beast so with my current level of magic expertise it should be no problem however....."

"Grrrrrr..."His stomach growled "I haven't eaten anything in almost 2 days so my mana levels won't be enough to kill this beast" He murmured loudly to himself.

"Wait...if they were so hungry then why didn't they just kill and eat the boare in the first place instead of making this over the top elaborate plan of theirs?" Gonzo wondered to himself while continuously observing the somewhat entertaining controversy.

"Grrrrrr...." Gripping his stomach tightly as his faced mushed together in discomfort reducing him to the same state as the boare.

( I only used my mana twice already on low level spells yet it's taking this much of a toll? I don't think I'll be able to generate enough to enforce a killing blow on it) His mind raced with thoughts as he could feel himself getting gripped by fear just staring into the eyes of the blood thirsty creature made his bone shake

"Looks like I'll have to be strategic and ware it out before using a powerful enough low level spell" He spoke putting on a brave face raising his eyes to stare it down "hehehe" his resolve conveniently smashed back at him.

Unfortunately the boare's level wasn't as low as expected showing it's superior strength by charging at him, focusing his opposingly curved tusk's on inflicting damage on his torso by manouvering faster than the mages eyes could capture.

"Crunch!...."

He could hear the very sounds of his bones crunching loudly in his head while being suspended by the hook of it's curved edge with tears flying out from his eye sockets before being launched brutally against a dormant bolder.

The mage was barely able to send brain signals to the rest of his body only being able to perform light movements such as the flickering of his fingers, his eyes blurred consistently with the only color being able to be recognized was the constant flow of red dripping down his face meanwhile the boare just hadn't had enough as it readied itself locking on once more prepared to deliver the final blow.

"I can't feel my legs.....nor arms....am I going to..." Unable to oppose in anyway the mage laid format as the rock he was resting on and a sudden recollection occured in his mind.

"When did it end up like this?" His brain began playing the times in his group he was actually filled with joy "I just don't understand where it all went wrong....."

"Oh yeah, it was when that bastard renzi got scammed and lost all our money in a fake investment"

"When did that even happen? I think it was about a month ago that was when our once successful guild broke apart living a group of three sad, broke and lonely men wondering from door to door looking for scraps"

"I wonder if he didn't get scammed...no if I never bothered to join in the first place would this have happened? No what am I doing I'm looking for who to blame for my death aren't I? I was happy when I joined and was still happy even when we became beggers because I knew....I knew..... that I wasn't alone in everything".

Suddenly his consciousness restored to his present and his blurry vision cleared steadily "if I don't try then who will?" His fingers moved more energeticly spreading to the rest of his body as he used his remaining depleting mana to pick himself up and stand.

Blood flowed out from his head, mouth and nose yet he cared not narrowing his eyes maliciously and grinning"come at me you damned animal, were both gonna roast in hell today!"

The boare charged at him with rage, his figure disappeared with the flow of the gentle breeze as it jumped on every surface with the intent of confusing him. The forest rang with the constant "bang!" Caused by the boares heavy weight and large size.

Finally it played the offensive as the breeze turned into a large gush of violent wind which gathered in one position and dispersed rapidly as though it were mimicking his spell.

Before his brain reasoned the fact it was the attacks direction it appeared at his eyes sight with the massive force it gathered dispersing side ways disintegrating anything they made contact with as the boares tusk's Aimed for his neck.

(Outsmarted by an animal! What the.....) his body tried to avoid the attack but was impossible as the speed and timing would never correspond

"Boom!"

An even bigger dust cloud covered the forest with the trees taking flight before crash landing against the landscape and few avoiding the forest completely "crash!" slamming into some shops at the market.

"What the hell!"

"Where did that even come from?"

"Was that a tree? How the hell is that possible?"

"Look over there. The forest!" A passerby pointed out gathering the attention of the muttering crowd.

"Is that a giant dust cloud? That can only mean....."

"Someones fighting in the forest"

"The old man is not gonna be happy with this"

Meanwhile in the forest the dust clouds which served as a smoke screen desipated once more with some debris crashing downwards from above.

"I'm real sorry for interrupting your cliche fantasy scene however...," As voice spoke calmly in the center of the battlefield.

The mages vision was still a bit blurred but could foreshadow a silhouette with average height standing firmly in front of him and what he happened to be laying on was the body of his unconscious colleagues lying behind him.

"Hey mage! What's your name?" The mysterious figure said from within the dust.

"It's marcon! Friend or foe?" He asked with a puzzled mind wondering his intentions to why he would interven.

"Who me? I just happened to be passing by and saw this little matchup going on so I said to myself why not see what it's all about"

(That voice!) His mind jolted "hey are you a kid by any chance"

"Hehehehehe, age is just a number bro and in this situation you shouldn't be asking me that!"

(Besides it's been too long since I've tested my strength, it would have been against my code to have attacked the animal until it did something truly heinous but everything played out as I expected in the end)

The dust cleared just a bit on the beasts end and it locked on immediately charging at an even higher speed due to its accumulated rage. It's very movement pushed the dust that gathered away with force at an unreadable speed until finally it aimed at where he stood and attacked with a malicious aura.

However..."crack!"

"Bang!"

"Your tooo slow but your tusk would make a good profit if I'm being honest"

The boare crashed head first with a loud "thud" missing one of it's curved hornes.

The dust surrounding him was cleared so

the first thing marcon did was redirect his blurry gaze towards the direction of the mysterious figure only to see a blue haired teenager wearing a red hoodie and black strap jeans.

His eyes widened with shock leaving his bloody mouth open in jaw dropping awe. While the beast decided to give it one more go as it raised it's battered body from the ground but Gonzo starred it down in disgust with an unreadable expression plastered on his face.

"It's time you rest for a bit"He picked up a small pebble and clenched the detached horn before tossing the pebble above him and swinging the horn against it with precise force.

The pebble cut through the air like butter flying faster than a speeding bullet pushing the boare and all it's weight across the forest slamming it through the natural barriers with a thunderous "Bang!" like a rag thrown in the garbage.

"Did that just happen?"

The only witness to this who was marcon still couldn't believe his eyes as

He was almost on the verge of passing out.
