"Excuse me ma, I forgot to drop Emily's lunch bag but I have given it to a maid, I would take my leave now" Nancy said annoyed at herself for disturbing her boss time with her boyfriend. She quickly turn to disappear from their sight.
"Stop!" Hermia ordered and the nanny stiffened. She heard Hermia footstep walk to where she stood. Hermia sized her up from hear to toe in disgust before her hand went for the nanny neck.
Nancy thought she was going to be strangled until she felt the furious lady pull on something on her neck. Then it clicked, the necklace.
She had forgotten to take it off when she returned to drop Emily's lunch bag.
"Where did you find this?" Hermia asked, her eyes examining the necklace to know if it was fake. Surprisingly, it was real and looked exactly like hers.
How could a nanny explain why she had an expensive necklace around her neck. Nanny thought. Her eyes were on the ground as her her brain tried to rack up a believable lie.
She couldn't say her husband got it for her since he could not afford to buy this from the little penny he has as a salary.
"Did you steal it?" Hermia asked again as her silence became unbearable.
"Ma, I didn't steal it" Nancy anxiously said for the fear of being accuse of steal and ending up in jail. She knew how Hermia act when she is angry and doesn't what to become the next target.
"If you didn't steal then tell us how you got it, I'm sure you can't this kind of things" this time it was Mike who spoke in a calm and calculated voice.
"Sir, I did not steal anything" Nancy said again.
"Then tell me why you are wearing the same necklace as I am" Hermia said and Nancy felt like her ear had stopped working because she could only hear the beat of her heart.
Nancy slowly rose her from the ground and stared at Hermia's neck. He eyes widened in shock to confirm the statement was true. Her eyes glistened when she thought of her fate in Hermia's hand. It was better if they thought she stole from them than for her to wear an alike clothing with Hermia.
"Surprised? Same with me. Now spit it out, where did you get that necklace" Hermia was in esctasy when she got that expression from her daughter's nanny.
"I promise you, I didn't steal it" Nancy said once again, willing her tears not to fall. She can't more humiliated than she already was. She is also a woman and she has pride.
"Okay then, let's say you did not steal it, did you sleep with rich men to get this?" Hermia's eyes showed no mercy just fury waiting to be unleashed.
"How can you accuse me of cheating on my husband, I can never do that not even for money" Nancy said as a frown hitched on her forehead.
"You denying it make it true" Hermia said and pulled on the necklace
"I'm not like that, I don't use men, I am not like you!" Nancy defended. It was until a seconds later she realize what she said. "Ma, I didn't mean it like that"
"You absolutely did" she said to Nancy and turned to Mike "Babe, can you see what she said about me, I have being merciful to her, gave her extra payment and this is how she repay me" Hermia complained, willing tears to come fall from her eyes.
Like a good boyfriend, Mike was on his feet. He wrapped his hand around her slim figure to console her.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean it like that, I'm sorry, I would punish myself" Nancy said and slapped herself in the cheek.
This caused Hermia to smirk, her face was hidden in her boyfriend neck and only Emily saw her smirk.
"Baby, would you let me punish her for saying that" Hermia asked in a hurt voice.
"If that would make you happy, do it" Mike said and release his hold from her.
Hermia stepped close to Nancy like a predator approaching a trapped prey. She patted Nancy cheek and she smiled. She could easily deceive Mike but not Nancy. She knew her punishment would be nothing compared to those pat.
Her thoughts were cut short as a slap landed on her cheek.
"Now I'm happy" Hermia said and turned to Mike with a happy smile.
Nancy couldn't hold it in anymore and let a tear slip from her eyes. This was the misfortune she had to endure to take care of her family.
"I'm so sorry ma, I would take my leave" Nancy said and wiped her tears
"Where did you think you are going to, I'm not done with you, who gave you that necklace" Hermia said, her voice sounded calmly but don't be decieved as her eyes held fury.
"I got it from a friend" Nancy answered and she wasnt lying about that.
"A friend just gave you a necklace and a friend can also give me a necklace" Hermia chuckled
"No ma, my friend, she didn't want it again so she gave it to me instead of throwing it away" That was the truth but the stated friend was Emily.
The little girl had found the box her father have gotten for her mother lying around in the sitting room that night a d gave it to Nancy as a gift the next day.
"That's a very good friend" Hermia said and her hand grabbed the necklace again.
"Ma, what are you doing, you are hurting me" Nancy complained as the chain of the necklace ate into her skin.
"Don't be a baby I'm getting rid of it" Hermia said and concentrated on pulling the necklace on the nanny's neck. She didn't care that the woman's neck was bleeding, all she wanted was for that necklace to be off her neck even if it meant for the woman to beheaded.
"Hermia, I suggest you stop" Mike said but it wasn't much of a protest.
"It's almost done just a little more" Hermia said with a devilish grin. Mike didn't see it as he was behind her.
The necklace cut and she dangled it in front of her. Hermia walked to the fire place and threw it into the fire. Nanny sobbed because that was her most expensive jewelery and most precious gift because it was given to her by her little friend.
"Now, I'm satisfied, don't bother coming to tomorrow because you are fired" Nancy nodded as she sobbed into her palm and left the house. "Emily, you saw that, that is how to treat a stubborn maid" Hermia said causally as if she was teaching her the lesson for the day.
"You are wicked, I hate you!" Emily screamed at her face in tears and ran to her room.
Not long later, Helena came in running into the sitting room.
"You won't believe what I have to tell you" Helena announced.
