Chapter 14 - Dreams Deferred

I am Lucky Strowk. 'Hard work and determination,' I lived by those words and expected life to be fair as long as I work hard.

So far, the rules have been changing after every round, and that is to be expected

since they do not want us to predict the next game and plan ahead. I came to Motherland to achieve my dreams, somewhere in the near future, I will take over the tenth base and change its reputation.

Galadrielle was the tenth kingdom to join the ANTs, so it has been looked down upon, we are the cowards that joined when it was safe, and we appear like fools with no backbones.

I devoted my life to that goal and this little runt wants to take that away by creating an absurd rule. Who does Neith think she is!?

The rules for this game are simple; in units of five, eliminate the other side's team leader. In either teams, there exist no spies. Use the rules of the real world to eliminate the leader. A wrongful elimination will result in your disqualification.

How am I supposed to identify my opponent without external help like the past participants? Why does this round start with me at a disadvantage? Either way, I will crush this round and show Neith the power of Galadrielle.

Representing Galadrielle was Lucky Strowk, a seasoned dark magic warrior who is declared the strongest rookie of Galadrielle. His black uniform is befitting of his magical attribute though highlighted by gold and red stripes.

His opponent in this match is no other than the eighth nation's strongest rookie, Kyorha Svye of the peaceful island kingdom known as Sylvia. Sylvia's purity is reflected in the uniform of her army, pure white. Additionally, Kyorha is a light mage.

The stage is set for the epic battle light and darkness.

"Well, if you of you are ready, let's get started, shall we?" Neith commenced the test.

Kyorha recited the rules, a key-phrase being that there is no spy in either teams. The rule protects him but it also hinders him from obtaining information from the other team without suspicion. "This is silly," he said.

He assembled his team to strategize, knowing very well that he can trust them.

Meanwhile, Lucky hath already hatched up a plan that would grant him victory.

The stage changed and looked more in a real life battlefield with both teams out of each other's sight.

Lucky, with his dark robes and piercing eyes, was known for his mastery of illusion and mind control. His team, a group of skilled mages, had one goal, eliminate the leader of the other team. Kyorha, a warrior with the power of light, magic that opposes that of Lucky, was equally formidable. His team, a mix of seasoned mages, had their sight on Lucky's team with the same objective.

The stage was set a deadly game of cat and mouse. Lucky, ever the strategist, decided to use his powers to sow confusion within Kyorha's ranks.

After assembling everyone, he asked them what their abilities, but he was more curious about the girl with white hair and red eyes. Initially he had suspected that she was from the clan that is well known in

Tellus for their ability to shapeshift into any mammal, and as luck would have it, he was correct.

Her name was Vesper, he sent her to infiltrate Kyorha's camp disguised as one of his teammates and find the identity of the team's leader and eliminate him. Her orders were to infiltrate by any means necessary and like a good soldier she is, she obeyed.

Vesper's mission was to feed Kyorha false information, leading him to believe that Lucky's team was planning a surprise attack.

Meanwhile, Kyorha, unaware of Lucky's penchant for deception, decided to play his own game. He sent one his best soldiers to find Lucky's team and stay in their sight.

As time went by, they both became increasingly paranoid. Lucky, convinced that the soldier sent by Kyorha is secretly communicating with one of his teammates, began to divert his mental strength to

hatch a plan that would protect himself, by secretly naming himself as the leader of his own unit.

The climax of their mind games came on a moonless night. Kyorha believing that he had outsmarted Lucky, launched a surprise attack on Lucky's base. Lucky's team found themselves surrounded by Kyorha's soldiers but there was something peculiar about Lucky's team.

At the commencement of the test, they were both assigned an equal amount of soldiers; five per team, but on Lucky's team there were four.

Kyorha started to doubt his own team but it was too late, the crimson eyes had already targeted him. Vesper was already in Kyorha's sight, waiting to land a punch. After all, Kyorha was the leader of his own team, he proudly declared himself as one while Vesper was spying. In this round, guessing is not enough,

by 'eliminating the leader', they actually meant to assassinate but this was a test so a mere punch to the face would suffice.

Just before Vesper could land her punch, Kyorha vanished in the blink of an eye, which was one of his abilities as light mage. He could move at the speed of light if he tried hard enough.

He then appeared behind Vesper and hit her at the back of the head, causing her to faint and fall to the ground. Eliminating her in the process.

Just as her unconscious body could hit the ground, Neith stopped the match. Declaring Kyorha as the loser of this round because he eliminated someone who wasn't the leader.

"Your recklessness will not be tolerated in the army." she said.

Lucky's mind was at ease, thinking that his long journey to victory hath ended but he was wrong. While Vesper was infiltrating Kyorha's team, she had to look like someone who already exist in the team, and if there were six soldiers, Kyorha would be suspicious, so she had to eliminate someone and take their

place within the team, in doing so, Lucky's team also failed the test.

Neith walked towards Lucky, who had tasted despair.

"I must admit, using a spy was a good idea, Lucky. You utilised your team well. Be proud of yourself."

"I tried hard to get here."

"Yes, you did but sometimes trying is not enough. Pick yourself up and fight another day."

Lucky who is lucky by name's bad luck doesn't end there. In Galadrielle, his home, reports of fisherman disappearing came flooding. One report stated that the ocean turned completely black before the screaming stopped.
