Chapter 20 - Chapter 20

David raised an eyebrow. He had thought that his mother, like his father, was very fond of that woman. However, it seemed that this time things were not as simple as he had imagined. Although he had told her to rest more, it looked like this time he would be in for some trouble from his mother for being late.

Today, even if he didn't intervene, someone would definitely face the consequences. He was just waiting to watch the drama unfold. "Mom, your daughter-in-law is tired and is resting in bed," he said.

Just as he finished speaking, Jennifer came running in, panting heavily, her brows furrowed. She had clearly just remembered that she made a mistake on her first day. "Mr. William..." She wanted to address them as Mr. William and Mrs. Sophia, but since she had already joined the Anderson family, had a marriage certificate with David, and had consummated the marriage, she could only force herself to say, "Father, Mother, I'm sorry. I'm not used to it and forgot."

She had heard David's words at the door. He had clearly told her to rest, but now he made it sound like she was being lazy. She had thought he was a good man, but it turned out she was wrong; his kindness was just a facade to make her life difficult.

Mr. William smiled gently. He was even kinder to Jennifer than to his own son. "It's okay, you didn't really need to come, especially not so early in the morning when there's nothing special to do."

"Who said there's nothing special?" Mrs. Sophia said slowly. "Your husband came over before you. What does this mean? Is this how you were brought up? You should be helping Scarlett prepare breakfast, as a daughter-in-law should." Mrs. Sophia sat next to Mr. William and gave him a cold glare, as if to say: Remember what you promised, or else she will be kicked out!

Mr. William said nothing. He remembered his promise but making Jennifer suffer was never his intention. As long as David could see Jennifer's good qualities and fall in love with her, then Jennifer would not have to live a hard life in the future.

"Then I'll go help Scarlett now." With so many servants in the house, did they really need her help? This was clearly just looking for trouble. She glared at David. Neither mother nor son were good people. One deliberately made things difficult, while the other fanned the flames and set traps. What kind of mother raises what kind of son.

Mrs. Sophia played with the diamond ring on her finger. "We've already had breakfast, and now you're going to help Scarlett? Are you going to check if she's washed the dishes clean enough?"

Jennifer was at a loss for words, her face turning red with embarrassment. She dared not look at Mrs. Sophia again. She knew she was being cowardly, but what could she do when her mother had taken their money? When under someone else's roof, you have to lower your head.

"It's your first mistake, so I'll be lenient. But if I don't make you remember this, you might make the same mistake again." Mrs. Sophia stopped what she was doing and shouted towards the kitchen, "Scarlett! Is everything I asked you to prepare ready?"

"Sophia, don't go overboard!" Mr. William reprimanded softly. Scolding was one thing, but playing too many tricks was unbecoming. Even though he had promised her, he couldn't watch Grace's child suffer too much.

Mrs. Sophia sneered, "Her husband isn't anxious, so why are you, as the father-in-law, so worried? Do you have inappropriate feelings for your daughter-in-law as well?"
