Chapter 5 - The Duel

Kael felt all eyes turn towards him. The weight of responsibility pressed down on him like a physical force. He knew a duel was a gamble, but he saw it as a chance to fight Azgor without a full-scale war. He had no interest in refusing and besides, refusing could crumble the fragile alliance they'd just built.

He met Mieza's gaze, a silent conversation passing between them. Her worried expression was something but he was calm and retained his internal resolve. Taking a deep breath, he squared his shoulders and stepped forward.

Kael's jaw clenched. He was ready. "Tell Azgor I accept his challenge," he declared, his voice steady and unyielding. "And that he will find I am not so easily defeated.

A low murmur rippled through the hall. Some leaders voiced their disapproval, urging Kael to reconsider. Lord Varyn, however, boomed in agreement. "A fair duel! That's the Zaronian way!" he declared, a glint of admiration in his eyes.

Queen Kyra nodded curtly after a moment's contemplation. "Yes, a fair duel,' she said, her voice laced with confidence in Kael's abilities.

Lord Therion who had been silent for a while finally spoke up, "A duel under the watchful eyes of representatives from each faction present here. A duel to decide the fate of the realm. Seems fair to me."

The demon lord's messenger let out a harsh cackle. "As you wish," it sneered. "Azgor awaits at the Crimson Crag, a cycle of the Zaronian moons from today. Prepare yourselves, the terms are simple. Only one will walk away as ruler of Zaron, and the other will be forced into exile."

With that, the figure and its contingent dissolved into a plume of black smoke, leaving an acrid stench in its wake. The council of Zaron and its allies stared at the empty space, the weight of the impending duel settling upon them.

Kael turned to the assembled leaders, his resolve burning brighter than ever. "I must prepare for the duel." he said. The leaders of the factions present, nodded in agreement, their earlier concerns replaced with a newfound determination. Kael knew he had taken the first step towards reclaiming Zaron.

The following days were a whirlwind of activity. Training intensified, with Kael sparring tirelessly under the watchful gaze of General Thalrok. Mieza, her brow perpetually furrowed with concern, pored over ancient texts, searching for any advantage they could exploit. Though she was confident in Kael's abilities, she did not expect his opponent to fight fair. As a demon, she knew demons and understood that not all demons could be trusted, especially those from other demon realms. Facing a demon from another realm was a feat that required extreme caution.

Messengers were dispatched to the various regions, rallying the populace and preparing for the possibility of war, if the duel ended in treachery.

Kael felt the weight of his responsibilities mounting with each passing hour. He was confident in his abilities. He had faced powerful foes before, but a duel against his kind, a powerful demon lord from another realm, was a different prospect altogether.

The day of the duel arrived, a cold wind whipping across the desolate plains surrounding the Crimson Crag. A jagged, blood-red rock formation, stained by countless battles, served as the chosen battleground. Representatives from each faction present had arrived to watch – a stern-faced demon warrior from the Shadow Cliffs, a wizened demon mage from the Whispering Fens, a stoic demon archer from the Frosty Plains, and a fiery tinkerer from the Fiery Peaks – stood witness alongside Queen Kyra of Tenaria and Mieza. Azgor's legions were also present.

Kael, clad in a polished steel armor gifted to him by Queen Maeve of the Elven Kingdom of Sindrah - a tribute for his victory in the realm of Eldora - stood tall across from Azgor, the gleaming armor catching the pale sunlight. His white hair, once tied behind his back, now flowed freely, framing his striking face with an air of confidence. His calming blue eyes, unwavering and strong, seemed to bore into Azgor's very essence.

The demon lord was a hulking figure, his obsidian skin radiating an unnatural heat. Jagged horns sprouted from his head, and his eyes burned with a malevolent crimson glow. He wielded a massive, wickedly curved blade that crackled with dark energy.

"So, you're the demon lord who wants my throne?" Kael asked, his voice firm and commanding. "I expected you to be quite intimidating or even a worthy match."

Azgor sneered, his jagged horns glinting with malevolent intent. "You are no match for my power, Prince. I will ensure that you are exiled and I will take your throne and everything you hold dear. I am a powerful demon lord. The one who strikes fear in the heart of demons across the demon realms. The one who makes the ground rumble. You cannot defeat me."

Azgor's wicked blade crackled with dark energy, but Kael stood unwavering, his armor shining like a beacon of hope.

Kael's eyes flashed to a brilliant, fiery blue, his confidence and strength igniting a fierce determination. "Well if there's one thing I'm starting to hate about you... it's that you talk too fucking much."

The air crackled with tension as the representatives declared.

"Let the duel begin." they boomed in unison.

Kael drew his own sword, its celestial steel humming faintly with a power that countered the demonic aura of Azgor's weapon. He knew this wouldn't be a simple fight of strength, but a clash of wills. He was ready.

The battle commenced with a thunderous clang of steel. Azgor unleashed a flurry of attacks, Kael parried each blow with his shimmering sword, its celestial essence glowing brighter with every strike. The demon lord's brute force was formidable, but Kael's skills allowed him to weave between the attacks. He spotted an opening and seized it, landing a swift kick on Azgor's chest, sending him stumbling back.

Azgor snarled, his eyes blazing with fury, and retaliated with a wave of dark energy. Kael raised his hand, and a shield of pure light materialized, deflecting the attack. He countered with a swift slash, aiming for Azgor's horns. The demon lord barely dodged, his horns scraping against the blade's edge.

Undeterred, Azgor summoned a maelstrom of shadowy tendrils, which Kael dispelled with a burst of celestial energy. Kael then unleashed a series of swift, precise strikes, each one aimed at exploiting Azgor's momentary lapses in defense. The demon lord stumbled, his footing unsure, as Kael's sword sliced through the air, leaving trails of glittering stardust.

Azgor's malevolent power surged, and he unleashed a devastating blast of dark energy. Kael, anticipating this, had already begun to absorb the attack. The blast struck him, but he stood firm, his armor glowing with a fierce, golden light.

Azgor, enraged, summoned a massive dark creature born from the shadows. The creature lunged at Kael, its jaws wide open, but Kael was prepared. With a swift gesture, he unleashed a brilliant, blinding light that bathed the creature and sent it recoiling.

Kael seized the opportunity to strike, imbuing his sword with energy. The blade shone with an intense, pulsing light as he delivered a series of swift, precise strikes. Each blow landed with incredible force, tearing through the creature and slowly dissipating its form.

Azgor, furious at the way Kael countered his attacks, unleashed a maelstrom of flames and dark energy. Kael, anticipating this materialized a brilliant shield, deflecting the attack.

The shield glowed with a fierce, golden light, and its surface rippled with energy. Azgor's attack was absorbed, and the shield began to glow even brighter, imbuing Kael with additional power.

Kael took advantage of the opening, surging forward with his sword shining with intensified light. Azgor, caught off guard, stumbled backward as Kael's blade sliced through his defenses, aiming for a decisive blow. Azgor desperately attempted to regain his footing, but Kael's relentless assault pushed him further back.

The duel raged on, the rhythmic clash of steel echoing across the desolate plains. Kael was relentless and he pressed on.

He knew that the longer the fight dragged on, the more Azgor would think of cheating. He needed to end this quickly. Suddenly, an opportunity arose. Azgor, frustrated by Kael's attacks, unleashed a furious horizontal slash. Kael ducked beneath the blow, feeling the burning wind whoosh past his head. He rolled forward, coming up behind the demon lord in a swift maneuver.

With a surge of energy, Kael launched a surprise attack. His blade, imbued with a more powerful energy this time, struck true, finding a chink in Azgor's armor. A searing white light erupted from the point of impact, momentarily blinding the demon lord.

Kael seized the advantage, pressing his attack. A flurry of precise strikes rained down on Azgor, exploiting the momentary opening. The demon lord roared in fury, flailing his massive blade wildly. But Kael, fueled by a hope, continued his assault.

The representatives watched the scene unfold, their faces etched with a mixture of awe and anticipation. Queen Kyra gripped her celestial bow, her knuckles white with tension. Meiza, her eyes blazing with determination, watched as the fight went on.

Just as it seemed Kael might gain the upper hand, Azgor recovered from his momentary disorientation. He punched Kael with his monstrous fist, sending the Kael flying across the rocky ground. Kael landed hard on the ground.

Azgor loomed over him, his crimson eyes filled with sadistic glee. "Pathetic," he sneered. "Your skills are no match for mine."

Kael, fueled by a surge of defiance, hauled himself to his feet. Kael closed his eyes, channeling his energy. He reached out, seeking a deeper connection with the power that flowed through him. Images flashed through his mind – battles fought by his ancestors, the unyielding spirit of his father—Leor, and Aamon—his grandfather. A surge of celestial and demon energy coursed through him, revitalizing his body and strengthening his resolve.

His eyes changed colour as he opened them, they were now a glowing gold. a newfound determination burning within them. Azgor, surprised by Kael's sudden change, watched with narrowed eyes as the prince charged. Kael fought with renewed vigor, his movements infused with an otherworldly grace. His blade danced with a celestial and demonic light, each swing imbued with the power of the heavens and the infernal.

Azgor, for the last time in the duel, was thrown on the defensive. He roared in frustration, his magic flickering erratically as he parried Kael's relentless attacks. The clash of steel echoed across the plains once more, but this time, the rhythm had changed.

The representatives watched in awe as Kael pushed Azgor back, his attacks unrelenting. Queen Kyra, a flicker of hope blooming in her eyes, urged Kael on silently. Mieza, watched and cheered him on happily.

Seizing the final opportunity, Kael lunged forward, channeling celestial and demon energy into his blade to deliver a single, powerful strike. His blade, humming with golden celestial light, collided with Azgor's in a deafening clang. This time, the demon lord proved no match for the combination of Kael's celestial and demonic heritage. Azgor's blade shattered, the fragments dissolving into wisps of dark smoke.

With a scream of rage and disbelief, Azgor was struck thrown backward by the impact. He slammed into the blood-red rock face of the Crimson Crag, the impact leaving a crater in its wake. Silence descended upon the plains, broken only by the ragged gasps of Kael, who stood, his sword held aloft.

Kael cautiously approached the crater. There was no sign of Azgor, only a lingering stench of sulfur and a faint glow of dissipating demonic energy. Azgor was defeated and destroyed.

A cheer erupted from the representatives. Relief washed over Kael, momentarily eclipsing the throbbing ache in his muscles. He had won the duel, securing Zaron's future… for now.

The representatives fixed their gaze on Kael, their faces a mixture of relief and astonishment. Queen Kyra and Mieza rushed forward, Kyra's regal demeanor momentarily forgotten, swept Kael into a fierce embrace. "You did it," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion.

"You saved Zaron, I'm so proud of you," Mieza spoke, her voice laced with pride as she hugged him.

Kael smiled but he could only nod. He had won the duel but he knew this wasn't over. His victory, however, was tainted by the knowledge that this might not be the end. Azgor was defeated but other demon lords still loomed over Zaron. Yet, for now, he had at least neutralised the current threat.

As the representatives congratulated Kael, a new determination settled over him. He knew that Zaron's true battle for had only just begun.
