Chapter 12 - The dark trade.

Lucien had dropped Ethan off, exchanging brief goodbyes. He smiled as he watched Ethan walk away before driving off into the night. Normally, Robert would drive him around, but today he wanted to have the other man alone, hence driving himself.

To be honest, Lucien hadn't been busy with any pressing plans. He enjoyed playing these games, testing Ethan's patience. But somehow, it made him feel a twinge of guilt. Ethan must have been angry but tried not to show it too much.

Lucien smirked, tapping his fingers on the steering wheel as he took a sharp turn, humming to the music playing on the radio. He couldn't help but smile. But now, he had to handle some things he had been neglecting, distracted by Ethan. He checked the time on his watch and smirked.

Lucien's darker dealings took place in a hidden facility far from his home, a secret hideout for his underground operations. This was where he truly thrived, away from the public eye, dealing in illicit activities that kept his empire running.

As he pulled up to the nondescript building, his demeanor changed. The light-hearted playfulness he showed Ethan vanished, replaced by a cold, calculating aura. He stepped out of the car, straightening his jacket as he approached the heavily guarded entrance.

The guards recognized him immediately, stepping aside to let him through. Inside, the atmosphere was tense, filled with the hum of machinery and low murmurs of conversation. Lucien made his way to the central control room, where his most trusted associates were gathered.

"Mr. Belmont," one of them greeted, a man named Carlos who oversaw the day-to-day operations. "We've got the latest shipment ready."

Lucien's eyes narrowed. "Good. Any issues?"

Carlos shook his head. "Everything went smoothly. We've expanded our reach to the East Coast as planned. The new distribution channels are secure."

Lucien nodded, pleased. "Excellent. What about the competitors? Any movement?"

Carlos handed him a tablet, displaying intelligence reports. "They're trying to encroach on our territory, but nothing we can't handle. We've already taken steps to neutralize their influence."

Lucien scanned the reports, his mind racing with strategies. "Keep a close eye on them. I don't want any surprises."

Carlos nodded, understanding the gravity of the situation. Lucien's empire was built on precision and control, and he wouldn't let anyone threaten that.

As they walked through the dimly lit corridors, Lucien's thoughts drifted back to Ethan. The young man was an enigma, a puzzle Lucien was determined to solve. But for now, he had more pressing issues to address. His empire thrived on these underground dealings, and he had to ensure everything ran smoothly.

They reached the warehouse area where workers were busy loading crates onto trucks. Lucien inspected the operation, his sharp eyes missing nothing. "Make sure everything is double-checked. No mistakes."

"Yes, sir," Carlos replied, relaying the order to the workers.

Lucien moved on to his private office within the hideout, a room filled with monitors and secure communication devices. He sat down at his desk, pulling up files and reports. The latest shipment included high-value items that needed special handling.

As he worked, his phone buzzed. It was a message from Robert, detailing the latest transactions and their progress. Lucien skimmed through the information, satisfied that everything was on track. He sent a quick reply, then leaned back in his chair, his mind once again returning to Ethan.

The boy had sparked something in him, a curiosity he hadn't felt in a long time. But Lucien knew he had to be careful. His world was dangerous, and bringing Ethan into it could have consequences. For now, he would keep his distance, watching and waiting.

Just then, his phone rang. It was Carlos. "Sir, we've got a situation."

Lucien's eyes narrowed. "What kind of situation?"

Carlos hesitated. "It's about the new distribution route. There's been an unexpected complication."

Lucien's jaw tightened. "I'm on my way."

As he made his way to the logistics room, Lucien's mind raced. The game was becoming more dangerous, the stakes higher. But he thrived on this, the challenge and the thrill of staying one step ahead.

Carlos was waiting for him, a map spread out on the table. "We've hit a snag with the East Coast route. One of our contacts has gone dark."

Lucien studied the map, his mind calculating possibilities. "Who do we have on the ground?"

"Jason's team is closest," Carlos replied. "They can handle it."

Lucien nodded. "Send them in. I want a full report by morning."

Carlos left to carry out the orders. Lucien sighed, running a hand through his hair. The challenges kept coming, but that was what kept him sharp. His empire thrived on his ability to adapt and overcome.

As the night wore on, Lucien continued to oversee his operations, his mind a whirlwind of strategies and contingencies. He was a master of this world, a puppet master pulling the strings. And he wouldn't let anyone, not even a potential threat, unravel his carefully constructed empire.
