Chapter 15 - The party (2)

Lucien and Ethan settled into the back seat of Lucien's sleek black car, with Mr. Robert, Lucien's assistant, taking the wheel. The interior was plush and comfortable, a stark contrast to the nervous energy that emanated from Ethan.

Ethan shifted in his seat, glancing sideways at Lucien, who was casually scrolling through his phone. The hum of the engine and the soft classical music playing in the background did little to soothe his nerves. He cleared his throat, trying to muster the courage to speak.

"So, um, this party," Ethan began, his voice wavering slightly, "it's for... rich people, right?"

Lucien looked up from his phone, a small smile playing on his lips. "Yes, Ethan. It's for the rich and influential. But don't worry. Just stick with me and you'll be fine."

Ethan nodded, though he still felt a gnawing uncertainty. "What's the purpose of the party? Is it just for socializing?"

Lucien chuckled softly, the sound both comforting and unnerving. "It's much more than just socializing. These events are where deals are made, alliances are forged, and sometimes, secrets are revealed. It's all very... strategic."

Ethan swallowed hard, trying to absorb the information. "And, um, what am I supposed to do there?"

Lucien turned to face him fully, his expression more serious. "Your job is to observe and learn. Pay attention to how people interact, what they say, and what they don't say. And, of course, stay close to me."

Ethan nodded again, feeling a mix of relief and apprehension. "Okay, I'll do my best."

Lucien's smile returned, this time with a hint of reassurance. "You'll do fine, Ethan. Just remember, confidence is key. Even if you're unsure, act like you belong."

They lapsed into silence for a moment, the city lights flashing by as they drove through the bustling streets. Ethan's mind raced with thoughts and questions, but he didn't want to bombard Lucien with them all at once.

Mr. Robert glanced at them through the rearview mirror, his eyes flicking back to the road just as quickly. He was used to these kinds of rides—quiet but filled with unspoken tension. He knew better than to interrupt unless necessary.

Lucien, sensing Ethan's continued unease, decided to shift the conversation. "Tell me, Ethan, what do you think of your new position so far?"

Ethan hesitated, choosing his words carefully. "It's... different. I mean, it's challenging, but I'm learning a lot. And, uh, I appreciate the opportunity."

Lucien's gaze softened slightly. "I'm glad to hear that. You're doing well, despite what you might think. There's a lot more to this world than meets the eye, and you're adapting."

Ethan felt a small surge of pride at Lucien's words. "Thank you. I'll keep working hard."

Lucien nodded, his expression thoughtful. "Good. Because there's a lot riding on this. For both of us."

Ethan's curiosity got the better of him. "What do you mean?"

Lucien's eyes met his, and for a moment, Ethan saw something deeper, something almost vulnerable. "Let's just say, our fates are more intertwined than you might realize. But don't worry about that tonight. Just focus on making a good impression."

Ethan nodded, though Lucien's words lingered in his mind. What did he mean by that? He wanted to ask more, but the intensity of Lucien's gaze made him think twice.

The rest of the ride was spent in a comfortable silence, with Ethan occasionally stealing glances at Lucien, who had returned to his phone. He wondered what kind of person Lucien really was. There were moments when he seemed almost kind, but there was always an edge to him, a calculated coldness that made Ethan wary.

As they neared their destination, Lucien put his phone away and adjusted his tie. "We're almost there," he said, his tone businesslike. "Remember what I said. Confidence."

Ethan straightened up, trying to calm the fluttering in his stomach. "Got it."

The car pulled up to a grand building, the entrance lined with expensive cars and well-dressed people. Mr. Robert stepped out and opened the door for them, and Lucien exited the car first, extending a hand to help Ethan out.

Ethan took the offered hand, stepping out into the night. The air was filled with the hum of conversation and the clinking of glasses. Lucien led the way, and Ethan followed closely, his heart pounding with anticipation and a hint of fear.

As they approached the entrance, Lucien leaned in close to Ethan, his voice low and commanding. "Remember, stay by my side and watch everything. This is where the real work begins."

Ethan nodded, swallowing hard. "I'll remember."

Lucien smiled, that enigmatic smile that Ethan was starting to recognize. "Good. Now, let's make an impression."

They walked into the opulent venue, and Ethan's eyes widened at the sheer extravagance of it all. Chandeliers sparkled overhead, and the room was filled with elegantly dressed guests mingling and laughing.

Lucien's presence commanded attention, and heads turned as they entered. Ethan tried to mimic Lucien's confidence, standing a little taller and trying to look as if he belonged.

Lucien led him through the crowd, introducing him to key players with a practiced ease. Ethan shook hands and exchanged pleasantries, all the while trying to remember Lucien's advice.

As the night wore on, Ethan found himself gradually relaxing, even managing to enjoy some of the conversations. Lucien stayed close by his side, guiding him with subtle cues and reassuring smiles. Ethan felt more at ease with Lucien's presence, his confidence slowly building.

However, a moment of tension arose when Lucien excused himself, saying he had something to take care of. Ethan's smile wavered slightly, and he nodded, trying to appear calm and composed.

"I'll be back soon," Lucien said softly, his hand lingering on Ethan's shoulder for a brief moment before he turned away.

Ethan watched Lucien walk toward the grand staircase, feeling a pang of anxiety as he climbed to the next floor. He took a deep breath, telling himself he could handle it.

Standing alone in the opulent room, Ethan tried to immerse himself in the atmosphere, sipping his champagne and attempting to blend in. He glanced around nervously, unsure of how to engage with the other guests without Lucien's guidance.

Across the room, a woman named Isabella noticed Ethan standing by himself. She had been waiting for an opportunity to speak to someone close to Lucien, and with Lucien momentarily absent, she saw her chance. With a determined smile, she approached Ethan, her eyes fixed on him.

Ethan was lost in his thoughts when Isabella stepped into his line of sight, her presence catching him off guard. She smiled warmly, her hand extended.

"Hi, I'm Isabella," she said, her voice smooth and inviting.
