In the morning Emily rose and went to the drawing-room, where she found Klaus leaning back on the sofa, his eyes closed, his hands hanging naturally at his sides, and a hint of sadness in his handsome face.
The smell of alcohol and cigarettes hung in the air, and on the table in front of Klaus were empty whiskey bottles, a little orange-yellow liquid left in the clear glasses, ashtrays full of cigarette butts, and a great deal of soot on the sofa and the floor.
Emily looked at the mess and wondered: What the hell did he go through last night? What was the relationship between that woman, Maya, and him?
Intuition told Emily that he must care for this woman.
Emily sighed softly as she went to her bedroom for a blanket. Klaus did not move when Emily put the blanket over him, and his nose made a slight sound of breathing.
Just as Emily was about to turn away, Klaus caught her by the wrist and drew her into his arms before she could react.
