Chapter 15 - Ambushes

Although the sky was getting darker, Charlotte was standing on the balcony of the hideout, where the lights of the city were twinkling like stars in the distance. She was lost in concentration as she looked out the window, and the air was chilly, with a soft breeze ruffling her hair. An intermittent chirping of crickets and the distant buzz of traffic were the only sounds that shattered the calm that prevailed throughout the night. Unease gnawed at her, a shadow that she was unable to shake, despite the fact that the triumph over the competing organization ought to have provided a sense of comfort.

Leaning over the railing, Jack joined her in the position. "It seems as though you are deeply contemplating something," he continued, his tone gentle but tinged with worry.

As she turned to meet his eyes, she let out a sigh. "Jack, I can't help but believe that there is something that we are losing out on. There is something about Stone's sudden readiness to collaborate with us and his openness to offer information that does not sit well with me.

Jack looked at her with a worried expression on his face and nodded. "The same notion has been going through my head. Stone is a powerful man, and powerful men are not the type to turn their behavior around so readily. Something is on his mind that he is not sharing with us."

Charlotte's thoughts were racing as she turned her gaze back to the metropolis. "What if he is working to exert his influence over us? Imagine for a moment that this entire situation was a ruse to get his hands on the evidence that we have stored against him."

Jack's eyes grew more wide. "You believe that he intends to delete the evidence, don't you?"

She gave a determined nod, her jaw permanently locked in place. "It is true. In addition, I believe that he is attempting to divert our focus by providing us with misleading information regarding the rivalry organization."

"He is aware that if I publish the truth, it has the potential to destroy him."

Jack scowled as he reflected on what she had said. "We must exercise extreme caution. Stone is up to something we do not know."

Charlotte gave a slight nod. "We must maintain a safe distance from one another, play along, but keep our guard up. We can't let him know that we have suspicions about him."

In the morning of the following day, the safe house was bustling with activity as the squad assembled for their subsequent mission. Stone had already risen and was examining the blueprints and charts that were spread out across the dining table. A short distance away, Marcus was enjoying a cup of coffee and periodically looking over at Stone, his expression being indecipherable. Stone behaving very disturbed and how the matter at hand is as urgent as a long call.

After entering the room, Charlotte and Jack shared a fleeting glance with one another, indicating that they were aware of each other's presence. As he looked up, Stone's eyes narrowed slightly as he focused his attention on them.

"Morning," Stone greeted with a brisk tone in his voice. "Today is going to be a very busy day for us. Although the competing organization may be struggling, they are not yet extinct. The time to strike is now, when we are in a position of strength."

"You to are journalists, what is required of you is take pictures, footages and you will write all these on your stories."

"In so doing, You will have helped us finish the organization. You also need to apply your investigative tactics to help sense any form of danger" He continued.

"Since when did Stone really became afraid. If this is stone we hear and know, he is not the type to talk of danger. This guy is a master!" Charlotte thought to herself.

Charlotte feigned a grin in an attempt to conceal her anxiety. "What exactly is the plan?"

Stone indicated the maps with his hand. "A number of strategic areas where they are reorganizing have been recognized. Our attacks will be simultaneous, and we will eliminate their leadership while also causing disruptions to their operations.

A veneer of professionalism was on Jack's face as he nodded his head. "That sounds fine. What is it that you require us to do?"

Stone defined their responsibilities, and his directions were very plain and specific. As he spoke, however, Charlotte's thoughts were racing. She needed to find a means to accumulate additional knowledge without giving away any of her secrets.

The mission was scheduled to take place the night after that. In the midst of the preparations being made by the crew, Charlotte and Jack were able to escape to the dimly lighted kitchen of the hideout.

"We need to keep our eyes and ears open," Charlotte muttered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the refrigerator. "We need to monitor our surroundings." "We need to be prepared in the event that Stone makes a move."

With a gloomy expression, Jack nodded his head. "I concur. Not only that, but we need to figure out a mechanism to validate his facts. If he is telling us lies, we have a right to know about it."

A gleam of resolve could be seen in Charlotte's eyes as she appeared to smile. "Jack, we are going to be fine. We are all in this together, I have told you this severally."

"After all, when the story is out, you too will feature there."

When Jack smiled back at her, his determination was identical to hers. "In agreement."

The target was a vacant godown located on the outskirts of the city. It was a facility that was unremarkable and was surrounded by weeds that had grown out of control and fences that were falling apart. The squad moved stealthily and precisely, keeping their motions quiet as they proceeded under the cover of darkness.

Stone took the lead, maintaining a composed and self-assured demeanor. Charlotte, on the other hand, had acute eyes that scanned every shadow and every corner for any indications of potential danger.

As soon as they arrived at the gate, Stone gave a signal for everyone to come to a stop. He hushed, "Remain alert," as he spoke. "What we are about to enter is completely unknown to us."

Charlotte gave a slight nod, her heart thumping rapidly in her chest. The moment she caught a glimpse of Jack, he gave her a comforting nod. They would be prepared.

The group made their way inside, and as they made their way through the godown, the darkness engulfed them. There was a heavy presence of the odor of dust and decay in the air, and the quiet was oppressive.

They became aware of the sound of voices as they moved closer to the central area during their approach. After Stone gave them the signal to take shelter, they hid themselves behind a pile of old boxes and listened to what he had to say.

A harsh and accented voice explained, "...They are moving the shipment tonight," and the voice continued. "All of us need to be prepared."

"Would you be so sure?" Someone else's voice responded. "There is not enough troops available for us to deal with an ambush."

At first, there was a voice that said, "Orders from the top." "We are obedient to directions."

Charlotte's thoughts were racing. If the information that Stone provided was accurate, then this could be their opportunity to deal a potentially devastating blow. But there was a nagging sense of uncertainty, and something seemed amiss.

Stone made a motion for them to move, and they moved forward, their footfall remaining noiseless on the concrete floor underneath them. By the time they got closer to the voices, Charlotte's heart was beating so fast in her chest.

Suddenly, the lights in the godown began to flicker on, temporarily blinding them. "An ambush!" Although Stone was raising his weapon, he yelled.

As the guns began to fire, the place descended into complete anarchy. As her heart raced, Charlotte hid behind a crate to protect herself. While her thoughts was racing with a mixture of terror and determination, she fired her weapon at the oncoming figures.

"Get back below!" In the midst of the chaos of the conflict, Jack spoke out, his voice barely audible.

Each member of the team moved in a coordinated and exact manner as they retreated. But as they struggled to escape the godown, Charlotte couldn't shake the sensation that they had walked right into a trap.

The environment in the hideout was tight when they returned there. Despite the fact that the mission had been a failure, Charlotte's thoughts was filled with uncertainty. She required clarification.

She was like, "Stone, what the hell was that?" Jack shouted, his eyes burning with rage.

The outlook on Stone's face was gloomy. "I'm not sure," she said. "The information is reliable. Someone must have provided them with information."

Charlotte's thoughts were racing. She spoke with a firm voice despite the agony that was occurring inside of her. "Or the intel was false from the beginning," she continued.

Stone's eyes started to narrow. "In what way are you indicating something, Charlotte?

The expression on her face was unwavering as she met his eyes. "What I'm trying to say is that we ought to take into consideration the potential that we have been given misleading information. That this person is attempting to exert influence over us."

Stone's jaw became more rigid, and his eyes flashed with something that was difficult to discern. "Are you implying that I am telling lies?"

Charlotte didn't bother to flinch. "What I'm trying to say is that we ought to exercise caution. It would be irresponsible of us to take any chances."

The tension in the room was tangible, and the silence that had been present for what seemed like an eternity continued not to end. Last but not least, Stone let out a sigh, his shoulders slumping. "You are absolutely correct. We need to exercise greater caution. But we can't give up at this point. We are too close together."

Charlotte nodded, growing more determined as she did so. "We are going to forward with our plans. On the other hand, we do it our way."

The expression on Stone's face changed, and for a brief instant, she saw a glimpse of something—possibly that of regret or comprehension. "I think so."

The days that followed were hectic with a lot of different things going on. The crew resumed their efforts to demolish the competing organization, but Charlotte and Jack stayed vigilant, their suspicions remaining ever-present throughout the entire process.

Charlotte's phone rang one evening as the team was getting together to discuss the most recent intelligence they had obtained. She gave the device a quick peek and noticed that there was a message from an unknown number.

"See you at the old church, shall we? At midnight. I have the information that you require."

There was a flutter in her chest. It is possible that it is a trap, but conversely, it could be the break that they required. With a frown on his face, Jack was shown the message by her.

"It's highly risky," he stated. "But it could be worth it in the end."

Charlotte gave a slight nod. Together, we will travel. We will exercise caution."

With its once-grand front now deteriorating and overgrown with ivy, the old church stood in the center of a neighborhood that had been abandoned for the past few decades. The moon was obscured by a dense blanket of clouds due to the fact that the night was dark.

Both Charlotte and Jack approached with extreme caution, keeping their senses on high alert. As they opened the doors of the church, the sound of the creaking doors reverberated throughout the sanctuary, which was completely empty.

Within the shadows, a figure could be seen standing at the altar. Charlotte's heart was pounding in her chest as they crept closer to her, and the sound of their footfall against the aged wooden floor was hushed.

In spite of the anxiety that was eating away at her, she maintained her composure and questioned, "Who are you?"

Suddenly, the figure emerged into the light, displaying a face that was already recognized. He spoke in a quiet voice and introduced himself as Alex. "In the past, I was employed by Stone."

It caused Charlotte's eyes to widen. "What are you going to provide us?"

Alex cast a circumspect glance around, his visage tight. "Stone has been playing jokes on you. The proof that you have against him is something that he is eager to obtain, and he is prepared to do anything to get it. Not to mention providing you with misleading information regarding the rivalry organization.

Jack's jaw became more tense. It was our suspicion all along. "Do you have any evidence?"

Alex gave a slight nod and then removed a flash disc from his pocket. "Anything you require is included in this. There are recordings, emails, and documents. All of it is present."

Charlotte's thoughts were racing. It is possible that this is the break they have been looking for, the evidence that Stone has been manipulating them. But this also meant that they were in an even more precarious situation.

The question was posed with a hint of mistrust in her tone of voice. "Why are you helping us?"

Alex's eyes became more resolute. "Due to the fact that I am aware of Stone's capabilities. What's more, I can't just sit here and watch him destroy people's lives. It is necessary to put a halt to him."

With a tiny tremor in her fingers, Charlotte lifted the flash drive and took it. "I am grateful."

Charlotte and Jack shared a look of determination with one another. It was clear that they had the additional evidence.

After returning to the secure location, Charlotte and Jack went through the stuff that was stored on the flash drive. Emails that detailed Stone's plans, recordings of his talks, and documents that outlined his plots were all presented as evidence, and they were damning. Everything was present and accounted for.

Charlotte's thoughts were racing as she attempted to put the puzzle together. Ever since the beginning, Stone had been utilizing them and exploiting them to achieve his own goals. And at this point, they had the evidence that they required to expose him.

On the other hand, while they were getting ready to confront Stone, she had a terrible realization. Assuming Stone was aware that they possessed the additional evidence, he would do anything in his power to silence them by obtaining and destroying the drive.

"Jack, we need to be careful," she continued, her voice shaking with the sense of urgency that she was feeling. "We are unable to let Stone know that we control this."

With a gloomy expression, Jack nodded his head. "I concur. A rigorous planning process is required for our future relocation. We just cannot afford to make any errors."

At the same time as they were formulating their plan, Charlotte felt the burden of their goal pressing heavily around her shoulders. They were engaged in combat with a formidable adversary, one who would not think twice about destroying them if given the opportunity.

However, it was too late for them to turn back at this point. They were going to engage in combat, they were going to reveal the truth, and they were going to bring Stone down.

All at once.

In the morning of the following day, the team got together for their briefing. Stone was seated at the head of the table, and his demeanor was as self-assured as it had always been. However, Charlotte and Jack's suspicions were more acute than they had ever been, and their determination was unshakable.

What kept surprising them most is how Stone had turned out to be a very simple man like a villager.

Stone's voice was strong as he stated, "Today, we are going to hit their main base." "This is our opportunity to deliver the final blow."

In a brief exchange of glances, Charlotte and Jack were able to communicate effectively through their silence. Even though they were required to cooperate, they were unable to relax their guard either.

Charlotte experienced a feeling of dread as the crew prepared for the upcoming event. She felt the burden of their task pressing heavily on her shoulders, and the atmosphere was heavy with anxiety the entire time.

On the other hand, they had a strategy. They would see it through to the end, regardless of the consequences.

Midnight was the starting time for the operation. It was dark outside, and the crew moved stealthily and with precision as they walked through the darkness. The magnitude of what they were about to accomplish caused Charlotte's heart to pound in her chest, and her mind to race as she processed the information.

As they got closer to the objective, Stone gave them a signal to stop what they were doing. He hushed, "Remain alert," as he spoke. "This is the end."

With her senses on high alert, Charlotte gave a slight nod. The moment she caught a glimpse of Jack, he gave her a comforting nod. They would be prepared.

As they made their way through the building, the group moved inside, and the darkness engulfed them throughout their journey. An uncomfortable quiet pervaded the atmosphere, which was filled with tension.

Right at that moment, the lights began to flicker on, and Stone's voice could be heard. Through the lifting of his weapon, he yelled out, "Ambush!"

As bullets filled the air, the room descended into complete and utter anarchy. As her heart raced, Charlotte hid behind a crate to protect herself. While her thoughts were racing with a mixture of terror and determination, she fired her weapon at the oncoming figures.

"Get back below!" In the midst of the chaos of the conflict, Jack spoke out, his voice barely audible.

Each member of the team moved in a coordinated and exact manner as they retreated. Charlotte was unable to shake the sense that they had walked right into a trap. But again Charlotte would wonder if Stone wanted to kill them, it would be very easy but why did he keep them along through this expedition of the purported rival group.

In less than a second, the phone buzzed. Charlotte looked and saw that this time it was a WhatsApp message with the sender inquiring where she might be. The sender who happens to be mark the editor continued stating that the reports are all over the police stations on your demise. Are you okay Charlotte?"

All reports have gone every media house regarding you. The funny thing is that your phone has been selective, it only selects certain numbers. Since I would not call with my own personal number for personal reasons, it would reject."

"Are you okay Charlotte? the authorities I reported to are already concerned and on look out for you."

"It has been several days of hectic search for you." Mark continued.
