Chereads / Investigation Gone Bizarre / Chapter 17 - It Was Just Foul Play

Chapter 17 - It Was Just Foul Play

A commotion could be seen in the newsroom. A surge of terror and resolve swept through the workforce as the news of Charlotte's disappearance spread like wildfire throughout the organization. As a result of Mark's decision to schedule an emergency meeting, the conference room was filled with people who appeared excited. Each member of the team, including Emma, Tom, Jerry, and the others, was present, and their concern for Charlotte was visible in the furrowed brows and strained postures that they displayed.

With a solemn expression on his face, Mark took his place at the head of the table. "All of you, I want to express my gratitude for arriving at such short notice. There has been no sign of Charlotte for more than twenty-four hours, as you are aware. We just got a communication from the people who are holding her captive. They demand that we should put an end to any and all investigations that are being conducted into Alexander Stone and his organization."

There was a wave of disbelief that spread over the room. Emma's eyes grew more wide. "What do they want in exchange for her release?"

A big breath was taken by Mark. "We are aware that Stone has committed a number of crimes, and they want us to produce a series of bogus stories that blame Stone's competitors for those crimes. In essence, they want us to clean his name and damage the reputation of those who oppose him."

A blow from Tom's fist crashed onto the table. "We are unable to accomplish that! There is a responsibility that we have to the truth and to it."

Mark gave a slight nod. "You are correct, Tom. However, at this moment, our top focus is finding a safe way to return Charlotte. We have to devise a strategy that will allow us to outwit Stone and his troops.

As Emma raised her voice, she could be heard trembling slightly. "Is there any way we can comply temporarily, buy some time while we figure out how to rescue her?"

A look of concern could be seen on Jerry's face as he reached forward. "They could be led to believe that we are compliant with the regulations if we publish a few pieces that are misleading. However, we need a strategy to locate Charlotte and free her before they become aware of what we are in the process of accomplishing."

While Mark was thinking about their choices, he nodded. "David Larson is already working on the investigation. He is searching for information and attempting to locate Charlotte in order to figure out where she is. In the meantime, it is imperative that we maintain our concentration and collaborate.

Each member of the squad took on a separate responsibility as the team dispersed. Emma began writing the deceptive pieces, her heart heavy with the knowledge that they were disseminating incorrect information. She was aware that they were distributing false information. As part of their efforts, Tom and Jerry gathered any further information that could be of assistance in locating Charlotte. The investigation into Stone's actions was coordinated by Mark and David in order to avoid bringing an excessive amount of attention to themselves.

In a room with little lighting, Charlotte awoke with a pounding pain in her head. In an effort to concentrate on her surroundings, she blinked her eyes. In the room, there was only a single, little window that was located high above her head, and the walls were made of concrete. While she was lying on a cot, she became aware that her hands were bound. This occurred as she attempted to sit up. But one thing noticeable to her is that she was alone with jack missing. She only remembers all of them alongside Stone being together in a room from a mission supposedly to dismantle Stone's rival company.

When the door finally opened with a creak, a figure entered the room. It turned out to be Stone, his expression a mask of phoney concern.

He spoke to Charlotte in a tone that was almost compassionate and said, "Charlotte, I'm glad to see you're awake."

She gave him a glare. "What do you want, Stone?"

As he sighed, he pretended to be sorry. "This is something that I never wanted to happen. My hand was pushed by you. The only thing I ask of you is that you put an end to your research and begin publishing the truth about my rivals. Did you not see for yourself as went for missions?"

With a sneer, Charlotte. "Is that the truth? These are the lies that you want us to promote, aren't they?"

Stone's expression became more resolute. "It is clear that you do not comprehend the wider picture. My competitors pose a threat, and if they are not prevented, more individuals will be put in a position of suffering. Charlotte, you have the ability to make a change in how things are."

"And what about the folks you've put through pain? "How about the crimes you have committed?" she retorted. "I know the truth, Stone, and I won't be part of your scheme."

Stone drew closer, his gaze chilly as he did so. "You are unable to make a decision. Each and every one of your coworkers, as well as your own life, is dependent on it. I recommend that you work together."

Even though Charlotte's heart was pounding, she did not show any signs of terror. "You won't get away with this."

Stone responded, "We'll see," as he turned to exit the room. Please consider my proposition. It is up to you to make a decision by tomorrow."

Stone turned back and slowly walked to Charlotte and gave her 30 seconds kiss while she just gazed at him.

As though that was not enough, he added a peck on her chick and said, "You never cease to amaze me young lady."

"Amaze yourself, idiot1!" she responded in harsh tone.

In the moment when the door shut behind him, Charlotte's thoughts were racing. She needed to find a way out of the situation and communicate with her colleagues. She didn't know how she could go about it.

When they returned to the newsroom, the team worked without stopping. David was providing them with updates on his investigation, and Mark had set up a secure line of contact with him just for this purpose.

Late at night, David received his most recent phone call. "All right, Mark, I have a lead. At the outskirts of the town, an abandoned house was observed to be entered by one of Stone's men. I have a feeling that they are keeping Charlotte at that location."

A wave of optimism washed over Mark. "David, that is very encouraging news. How does the plan work?"

David presented a plan for infiltrating the house. "We are going to require a distraction. Something that will divert their attention away from the building so that we can enter it and rescue her. "

After a little pause, Mark reflected. "We are able to put up a sham demonstration. Together with a few local activists, we will get together a group of our fellow workers. Attempt to make it appear as though it was an unplanned protest against Stone's activities."

"Indeed, that ought to garner sufficient attention."

David was in agreement. "Excellent... While they are not paying attention, we will move in. Make sure you are prepared to rally your squad."

The following evening, the personnel of the newsroom convened in a park that was adjacently located. By holding signs and chanting slogans, they were able to attract some crowd. With a commanding and unmistakable tone, Emma took the initiative.

"The crimes committed by Stone shall not go unpunished!" She said loudly, "We demand justice!" and the audience responded by echoing her comments.

In the midst of the growing demonstration, Tom and Jerry remained at a distance and kept a tight eye on the house. Mark maintained communication with David, who was in charge of directing the overall rescue operation.

Charlotte was able to hear the commotion that was occurring outside the house. She made an effort to hear, a glimmer of optimism appearing in her face. She was aware that her crew was getting closer, but she was uncertain as to whether or not they would arrive within the shortest time possible.

David and the rest of his squad moved quickly, making use of the distraction that was occurring. After neutralizing the guards at the door, they sneaked inside and made their way through the halls, which were only dimly illuminated.

"Charlotte?" David spoke in a low voice, and his voice reverberated throughout the deserted corridors.

It was in a raspy voice that she said, "David, come over here!"

She was still chained when they discovered her in the cramped room. The smile on David's face was one of relief as he immediately freed her. "We need to move, now."

A nod was given by Charlotte, whose legs were feeble yet determined. "Let's go."

As they made their way out of the building, they came across additional guards. The two groups engaged in a brief altercation, but David's side was able to prevail over them. They left the house, blending in with the noise and confusion of the demonstration.

Mark was standing nearby, his eyes frantically searching the crowd for something to see. He felt a sense of relief sweep over him the moment he laid eyes on Charlotte.

When he arrived at her side, he yelled out, "Charlotte!"

Shakely, she smiled at Mark. "It is my pleasure, Mark. My life has been saved by you."

After Charlotte returned to the newsroom, she was updated on the situation and brought up to speed on the latest developments. While the team was relieved to have her back, they were well aware of what would likely follow.

"We need to be careful," Mark cautioned. "It is expected that Stone will seek retribution. We must always aim to keep one step ahead."

Having reaffirmed her resolve, Charlotte gave a slight nod. "We need to give Daniel a go ahead regarding the evidence we had presented to him."

Emma asked, "What about the files you had before you were captured?"

She suggested. "Are you still able to access them at this time?"

The expression on Charlotte's face changed. "Yes, I do," she replied. "Part of it is what I gave Daniel."

The research that Tom and Jerry were conducting into the rivalry organization contradicted Stone's findings. It was made abundantly evident that Stone had been conducting a campaign of smears in order to divert attention away from his own criminal activities.

Jerry emphasized that information should be shared with the public. "The public deserves to know the truth."

While Mark was in agreement, he was cautious. We must employ a strategic approach. In the event that we release everything at once, Stone will be left with no other option but to punish us.

"We need to construct our case and make it as solid as possible."

While they were getting ready to announce their findings, the anxiety that was present in the newsroom was evident. Immediately, Charlotte called out, "Jack! Jack! Jack!"

"We were with Jack at the time when we were being foul played." She added.

"What do you think?" Mark asked.

"I do not know."

"Wait, let us deal with the matter at hand first, do not worry, Jack must be safe."

As the deadline for publication drew near, Mark pulled the crew together for one more briefing. "This is the end. Once we make our announcement public, there is no going back. Everyone needs to be ready for the consequences of their actions."

With a resolute gaze, Emma gave a head nod. You can count on us, Mark. Despite the fact that we are aware of the dangers, we cannot disregard this matter.

As a result of the hardship, the crew had become more cohesive and had developed stronger relationships with one another. Through their mutual dedication to the truth, Charlotte and Mark had formed a profound regard for one another, which was the driving force behind their progress.

With her inventiveness and tenacity, Emma had earned the admiration of her coworkers, and she had become an important player in the inquiry. Tom and Jerry, who had been competitors in the newsroom in the past, had finally come together to establish a formidable team. The combination of their skills made them a formidable adversary.

As they got ready to publish their findings, the team took a minute to ponder without any noise. They had a same goal in mind, despite the fact that they were aware that the path that lay ahead would be challenging.

The team gathered around the conference table on the morning of the publication, their nerves on edge as they discussed important matters. Before the articles were made available to the public, Mark requested that they undergo one more review.

With a steady tone, he stated, "Everything appears to be in good shape." "Let's do this."

As Charlotte was just about to press the publication button, the door to the newsroom suddenly opened, and a number of guys dressed in black suits and armed with firearms rushed in.

One of them yelled out, "Everyone, stay where you are!"

Mark moved forward while raising his hands in the air. "What do you want?"

There was a sneer shown by the group's leader. "Stone is sending his best wishes. He would like to speak with each and every one of you.

The knot of anxiety that Charlotte felt in her stomach was icy and deep.

"Until when would Stone stop this nonsense of he wants to meet..."

Desperate glances were exchanged among the members of the team as the men in black got closer. Now that they had put everything on the line to expose Stone, they found themselves in the midst of the lion's den.

The leader cautioned, his gaze icy and uncompromising, "Move, and you're dead."

Knowing that the following few moments would determine their fate, the men in black presented Charlotte a piece of information they wanted published at a gunpoint. While they did that Charlotte pressed the publication button secretly without their knowledge. As they presented the piece of information for publication, they had no idea that there is just some publication that is in few seconds time in the public domain. In pretense, Charlotte took the piece of information and started typing (while not scared) in preparation for publication. And when she finished, she proceeded to publish the article too and it got into the public domain.
