The plane landed at Juárez Airport, and Bruno hailed a taxi, wrapping his arms around her as they got in. She stood there, hesitating, and said somewhat awkwardly,
"Um... why don't you go pick up Nola first? I think I'll skip meeting your parents for now…"
She didn't know why, but just the thought of meeting Bruno's parents made her nervous, even though she had met them once a few years ago and knew they were very nice people.
When Bruno brought her to meet his parents years ago, she hadn't felt this kind of tension. She wondered what was different this time. Perhaps it was the guilt she felt because of how her own parents had treated them. Or maybe it was just that she had been a carefree girl back then, not understanding life or its complexities.
Bruno found her reaction amusing and pulled her closer,
"It's not like you've never met them before."
She shook her head and stepped back,
"It's different! It's just different!"
