Chapter 16 - 16: The Smokescreen

The tension in the air at Vance Pharmaceuticals was palpable as Vance's lieutenants gathered in his office. Edgar Vance stood at the window, looking out at the protesters who continued to chant slogans and wave placards. He turned to face his team, a cold smile on his lips.

"We need to move quickly and decisively," Vance said, his voice steely. "Curt, what's the status of our plan?"

Dr. Curt, looking more haggard than usual, straightened his posture. "We've coordinated with our contacts in the government and police. They're ready to make the arrests. We'll accuse them of masterminding a scheme to introduce counterfeit versions of our Morterra drug."

Vance nodded approvingly. "Good. And the media?"

One of his PR executives stepped forward. "We've already prepared statements for the press. We'll paint the protesters as part of a coordinated attack on our company, using fake drugs to discredit us. The public will believe our version if we control the narrative."

Vance's smile widened. "Excellent. Make sure the news breaks tomorrow morning. I want this to hit hard and fast."

---

The next morning, Ethan and his team gathered in the lab, as usual, engrossed in their work. The television in the corner was on, broadcasting the latest news. Suddenly, a breaking news banner flashed across the screen.

"What's this?" Kai said, turning up the volume.

The news anchor's serious face filled the screen. "In a stunning turn of events, police have arrested several individuals accused of introducing counterfeit Morterra drugs into the market. Authorities claim these individuals were behind the recent protests against Vance Pharmaceuticals."

Ethan's heart sank as he watched the footage of people being led away in handcuffs. "No, this can't be happening," he muttered.

Anya looked up from her work, her expression worried. "This is a setup. Vance is trying to discredit the protests and distract from the real issue."

Joe, who had been monitoring security, walked over, his face grim. "We need to act fast. This kind of manipulation can turn public opinion against us."

Ethan nodded, determination hardening his features. "We need to expose the truth. Kai, can you hack into their systems and find any evidence of the setup?"

Kai grinned, already pulling out his laptop. "Consider it done. I'll dig up whatever dirt I can find."

---

At Vance Pharmaceuticals, the plan was unfolding perfectly. The media was buzzing with the news of the arrests, and the protesters were starting to disperse, disheartened and confused. Vance watched the coverage with satisfaction, feeling the pressure lift from his shoulders.

"This should keep them busy for a while," he said, turning to Dr. Curt. "Good work, everyone."

Dr. Curt, however, was less confident. "We need to be careful. If they find out the truth, it could blow up in our faces."

Vance dismissed his concern with a wave of his hand. "They won't find anything. We've covered our tracks. Now, let's focus on getting our profits back on track."

---

Back at the lab, Kai was deep into Vance Pharmaceuticals' network, fingers flying over the keyboard. "I'm in," he said, eyes scanning the data on his screen. "They really tried to cover their tracks, but I found a trail. Emails, transactions, and even some internal memos discussing the setup."

Ethan leaned over his shoulder, reading the incriminating evidence. "This is exactly what we need. We can use this to expose Vance and clear the names of those arrested."

Anya looked relieved. "We need to get this to the media. The truth has to come out."

Joe, ever the strategist, added, "We should also have a backup plan. If Vance tries to suppress this, we need to be ready to leak it through other channels."

Ethan nodded. "Agreed. Kai, send this to every major news outlet. Anya, draft a statement highlighting the real story. Joe, let's prepare for any fallout. We're not backing down."

As the team sprang into action, Ethan felt a surge of determination. Vance might have bought himself some time, but the truth was on their side. With each step, they were getting closer to justice and a real cure for Morterra.

---

Hours later, the news broke again, this time with a very different tone.

"We have received new, shocking evidence suggesting that the recent arrests and accusations against protesters were orchestrated by Vance Pharmaceuticals. Leaked documents reveal a deliberate attempt to suppress dissent and maintain control over the narrative."

Ethan and his team watched as the story unfolded, feeling a sense of vindication.

"Looks like we hit them where it hurts," Kai said, a triumphant smile on his face.

Ethan nodded, his expression serious but hopeful. "This is just the beginning. We need to keep pushing, keep fighting. Vance's days are numbered."
