Chapter 18 - 18: The Escape

olice convoy sped through the streets, taking Edgar Vance to the station. Handcuffed and seething with anger, Vance sat in the back of the police car, glaring at the officers.

"You think this is over?" Vance snarled at the officer beside him. "You have no idea who you're dealing with."

The officer, unfazed, looked straight ahead. "Save it for your lawyer, Vance."

As the convoy turned down a quiet, industrial road, a sense of foreboding hung in the air. The lead car suddenly screeched to a halt as a black SUV blocked their path.

"What's going on?" the officer driving Vance's car muttered, reaching for his radio. "Dispatch, we have an obstruction on..."

Before he could finish, a hail of bullets erupted from the surrounding buildings. The officers scrambled for cover, but they were outmatched. Within moments, all the police cars were disabled, and the officers were down.

Vance, still handcuffed, watched in shock as masked men descended upon the convoy. One of them, a tall, imposing figure, approached the car. Vance's eyes widened in recognition. "Viper."

Viper, Edgar Davids, smirked as he yanked the door open and pulled Vance out. "Thought you could use a hand, brother."

Vance grinned, the fury in his eyes replaced with relief. "I knew you'd come through. Let's get out of here."

The masked men quickly disposed of the evidence and dragged the fallen officers' bodies into the SUV. Vance, still handcuffed, followed Viper to another vehicle parked nearby.

As they drove away, Viper glanced at his brother. "You okay?"

Vance nodded, though his hands trembled slightly. "I'm fine. But we need to act fast. This mess needs to be cleaned up, and I have some scores to settle."

Viper's expression turned serious. "What's the plan?"

Vance clenched his fists. "First, we find out who leaked the information. Then, we take down Ethan Moore and his team. They're the ones behind this."

Back at Ethan's lab, the atmosphere was tense but hopeful. The first phase of human trials had shown promising results, and the team was cautiously optimistic.

Anya reviewed the latest data on her computer screen. "Ethan, come take a look at this. The initial results from the first few volunteers are exceeding our expectations."

Ethan walked over, his eyes lighting up as he saw the data. "This is incredible, Anya. We're actually seeing a significant improvement in their symptoms."

Marcus joined them, holding a clipboard. "I've been in touch with the volunteers, and they're all reporting positive changes. We're on the right track."

Kai, sitting at his station, looked up from his computer. "Guys, you need to see this. Vance was being transported to the station and...there was an ambush. The police officers were killed, and Vance was rescued."

The room fell silent as they processed the news. Joe clenched his jaw, his military instincts kicking in. "This is bad. Vance is going to come after us with everything he has."

Ethan nodded, his expression determined. "We need to be prepared. Double our security measures, Kai. Joe, can you coordinate with some of your contacts to get additional protection?"

Joe nodded. "Consider it done. We're not going down without a fight."

Anya looked at Ethan, concern in her eyes. "What about the trials? We can't afford any interruptions."

Ethan took a deep breath. "We keep going. No matter what Vance throws at us, we keep pushing forward. This cure is bigger than any of us. We're going to finish what my father started."

As the team sprang into action, reinforcing their defenses and continuing their work, Ethan felt a surge of determination. They were on the brink of something extraordinary, and nothing—not even Vance and his ruthless brother—would stop them from reaching their goal. The path to a cure was fraught with danger, but with their combined strength and unwavering resolve, they would see it through to the end.
