Chapter 9 - Escape

Naiari knew without a doubt that she had to make a move immediately or else she would be caught in the middle of whatever it was that was that this royal family had going on with them and it would not end well for her.

She took a look out of the wide windows and saw that there was a vine plant which had grown so much that it had latched onto the wall and it was fairly close to the window. All she would need to do in order to get to it was shimmy on the ledge.

She quickly took off her dress and rummaged through her luggage until she found the least heavy dress which was a brown dress with embroidery around the bodice and sleeves. She poured all the jewelry she could find on a piece of fabric and fashioned it so that it looked like bag.

After she put on the dress, she slung the bag over her neck and shoulder then hurried to the window and got out then climbed down then ran along the building, coming to a stop multiple times when she heard someone's voice or footsteps. It felt like her heart was beating in her stomach.

She was startled by the sudden clanging of bells and she quickly ducked and stayed still when she heard multiple footsteps as they ran and when it went silent she got up and continued to move, crawling along the building.

She was worried that this plan to run away had not been properly thought out, how was she supposed to escape a heavily guarded palace that she was a stranger to? Who knew what they would do with her if she was caught. However she was too desperate and she found her feet propelling her along as if they had a mind of their own.

Some how, she found a narrow door against the wall and miraculously when she tried it the door opened soundlessly. She looked around, feeling highly suspicious about how easy it had been so far and when she saw no one she bolted out through the door and kept on running.

She noticed that there were not a lot of people on the street and the that few she met were running like her but in the opposite direction. She was too frazzled by her need to be as far away as soon as possible to think too much about what looked strange, she did not even connect a line between the ringing bells and the scarce number of people on the streets.

Naiari ran until she had gone past the limits of the city and even when she got to the first line of trees she did not stop and ran until she had gotten deep into the forest and she was forced to stop in order to catch her breath.

So far she had not heard sounds of anyone coming after her so she felt a little more comfortable stopping but she remained alert, listening for the slightest noise.

As she stood doubled over, her chest raw from the exertion she greedily swallowed huge gulps of breath before she straightened up and had a look around her environment. She located a fallen over tree and sat on it to rest her throbbing legs while appraising her current condition.

She was in the thick of the forest, with no idea where to go from there, no idea what the future held and if she would even be able to survive past the night. She was afraid of the future and what it would bring but she could not bring herself to turn back. There was nothing there for her.

She realized that she had been letting people dictate to her about how her life would be and so far it had brought her nothing but misery, it was time for her to take charge of her life and chart her own course.

She figured that the next step to take was to get off the log and keep walking until she got to the nearest village then she would pawn off a little of her jewelry and find transportation to a crowded city far enough that no one would recognize her and no one would come looking for her.

Having a clear direction in her mind at last, Naiari got up and prepared to start walking when she suddenly had an eerie feeling, it like she was being watched. She slowly turned around, listening keenly for any noise and checking in the trees.
