The question had been on his mind for some time and while Theo didn't want to be rude about it, he had to ask.
He knew how horrible humans were to one another and while Samara's intentions could be good, he had to ask her himself. Theo was not going to risk getting manipulated by anyone.
"I don't mean to be rude… but I need to know." Theo added at Samara's silence.
"No… I get why you asked. It's weird that a stranger would willingly help out." Samara chuckled nervously before sighing. "And if I'm being honest… I do have a reason."
Theo stiffened at her words. "You do?"
"Yeah… I like you…" Samara went even redder. "As a character I mean. You are one of my favorite characters from the webnovel and it was like a dream come true meeting you…. Even if you freaked the hell out of me at first."
"So, you helped me because I was a favorite character of yours?" Theo asked, trying to wrap his head around the notion.
"Yeah… it's stupid." Samara murmured. "But I had another reason and that was empathy. I've read enough isekai stories to know landing up in another world can be scary… especially when you have no one to help you out.
"I mean most characters have plot armor but this is the real world and no one gets plot armor. Who knows what'll happen if I don't help? Besides, there was probably a reason you landed up in my living room and not somewhere else."
"Like fate?" Theo asked.
"I guess you could call it fate, destiny or whatever." Samara shrugged. "But all I know is there is something grand at work here or I'm currently high on drugs stuck in a psych ward. Honestly, hope it's the first one…"
Theo wasn't sure what a psych ward was but he could make sense of what Samara was saying for the most part. And he agreed with her thoughts of something grand being at play with this whole situation.
There had to be a reason he was suddenly able to teleport to this world. It didn't just happen by accident.
It could be something as simple as the Demon King using a spell that teleported him to this world or even one of the gods getting involved in the fight.
Now that Theo thought about the fight, the blinding light had been weird. Perhaps it was the cause…
"Anyway, if I've answered your question, I need to get back to work." Samara said, breaking Theo's train of thought.
He turned his attention back to her and noticed she was pointing at the counter where one of the café workers was waving at her. Seemed like her break was over.
Theo nodded in understanding and Samara got up, taking the empty dishes with her as she went over to the counter to help. He watched as she headed to the back of the café before turning away to gaze out through the large window.
The sun shone brightly into the late afternoon, a few people walking around the streets. The café was a little busy with everyone going about their day.
It was peaceful to say the least and very different from the normal battle stricken land he had quickly gotten used to. Theo wondered if he would ever be able to live such a normal life.
He had never really thought about the future after his battle with the Demon King. He was even willing to die as long as the Demon King died along with him. Revenge was all he wanted. Theo had no future besides killing the Demon King.
But things were different now.
He was stuck in this world whether he liked it or not. There was no more fighting the Demon King so he had to learn what he could to build a new life here.
The question was how.
Perhaps he could pick up the sword once more. This world did have armies so it would be easy to join one…
No.
Theo had only picked up the sword to avenge his family and village. Had the demons not killed and pillaged his village along with many others, it was unlikely he would have ever touched a sword let alone fight in a war.
For a moment Theo wondered what his life would have been like if the demons had never attacked his village.
But the thoughts quickly ended because no matter how much he would think about it, the past could never be changed. It was pointless thinking about things he couldn't change.
What he had to focus on was the future.
Theo turned his attention back to the pile of books sitting on the table. The topics in them had been quite interesting. Maybe if he kept learning about this world, something would spark a passion in him that had long since died.
He had some money so it wasn't like he needed to find work right away. Still, it was best to keep his options open.
Suddenly something flashed from the corner of his eye making Theo look up. A large car drove past the café, the side of it bearing an image of a familiar face along with some words.
Theo tried to place the face but before he could solve it, a voice interrupted him.
"Hey there, handsome." The voice murmured as Theo turned his attention away from the window. "You seem lonely… Want some company?"
Theo gazed at the woman who had appeared at his table, unsure what was going on. She leaned against the table on one arm and gave him a dazzling smile.
However, Theo couldn't help but realize what this woman was trying to do. He had seen it countless times at the taverns he'd stayed at while he was a knight.
This woman was a p-
"Theo, this woman isn't bothering you, is she?" Samara's voice interrupted as she placed a slice of cake on the table, grinning madly at the other woman.
The woman turned to her and gasped, "Oh… I didn't mean to… I'll be going then."
She quickly hurried away and Samara let out a sigh of relief making Theo laugh. One minute, Samara was a fearsome tiger and the next a harmless kitten.
"Thanks for that." Theo said.
Samara nodded in acknowledgement. "No problem… Signal me if you want me to scare away anyone else."
With that, she hurried off to help some customers before Theo had a chance to say anything.
