As we stepped out of the building, I inhaled deeply, trying to shake off the suffocating feeling that had wrapped around my chest ever since Miss Helen dropped the bomb about Elaine's adoption. Harry walked beside me, his hands shoved deep into his pockets, and for a moment, we both fell into an uncomfortable silence. The crisp air felt biting against my skin, but it did little to cool the heat of anxiety pulsing through my veins.
I kept my gaze forward, focused on the parking lot ahead, though my mind was racing. I could feel Harry stealing glances at me every now and then, but I wasn't ready to confront whatever thoughts were brewing in his head. Not yet.
When we reached my car, Harry finally broke the silence.
