I sat with her for a while, watching as Elaine played with her toys, occasionally, looking up to smile at me.
There was a quiet innocence that made my heart ache. I had no idea what was going on – no idea about the storm that had been raging around her family and now, I had to protect her from it.
As we spent time together, I couldn't stop thinking about Amelia's warning. Harry. What did she mean when she said he wasn't who he said he was? How could I trust him after this?
But more pressing than the fact that I was now responsible for a child. A child who would be looking to me for guidance, safety and stability.
"Elaine, are you hungry?" I asked the child.
"A little!" she nodded looking up from her coloring book "But I'll eat later after I'm done with this."
"Alright dear, then you don't mind if I could go talk to your caretakers over there right?"
