"She is my sister after all." Her voice was quivering with panic and she shook like a dry leaf in the winters. Her body looked so frail as if it would fly away any second.
Max felt pity for the weak girl. He softly nodded without asking further.
"Alright, I understand. You do not need to worry so much." He consoled her but she could see the rage boiling on his face. She lowered her head and slowly nodded.
"There is a packet of snacks in the backseat. Eat something you must be hungry for. We will get there soon." she nodded and opened the packet. There were small gummy candies and beetroot chips. Her lips curled into a wry smile. In her past life, he had brought the same snacks for her daughter too saying they were healthy but Addie never liked them.
She opened the packet and ate them hurriedly. The man looked at Nora with his heart burning to save her. They must have kept her hungry too.
The car stopped in front of a large hospital.
"We will check your wounds and do some tests. So you have to live here for two days. Do not worry, I will make sure that your uncle and aunt could not come here. Alright?" he assured her again and again as if she was a weak child. Nora nodded, her eyes filled with genuine gratitude and warmth. She would remember this in her life.
He parked the car and guided her in the corridors. Nora felt proud when many nodded at him with respect. They walked a bit further when a nurse came running. Panicking, she whispered something and Max's face went grim.
He excused himself and went to the other side to discuss something with the nurse.
"You must be very busy." she whispered in a low voice. When he returned looking worried. "You can guide me and I will leave on my own."
He sighed in relief and nodded.
"There is an emergency. I need to see it." looking back, at the nurse, he nodded, "go to the left, room number 306. Change your clothes into a patient gown there and rest. I will send a maid to collect your blood and do other tests. She would help you with ointment too." she nodded and urged him to leave early.
He sighed and patted her shoulders before leaving. Nora noticed many gazes on her. But when she looked back at them, they looked away.
She smiled and shook her head as she walked to the number he said. The door was unlocked. She entered it and found three pairs of patient gowns. But as she picked them, each of them was in large size.
Frowning, she picked up the smallest one and changed into it. After that, she laid on the bed and closed her eyes.
After fifteen minutes, she heard the door opening. A young maid wearing the mask entered.
"Are you Leonora Stone?" She confirmed and when Nora nodded. She took out an injection. "The doctor had asked me to give you an injection. Lie down and make a fist of your left hand." Nora frowned. If they were doing any test, the blood should be drawn out of her body.
"Why do I need an injection?" she asked, tilting her head, waiting for the nurse to reply. The nurse frowned with her eyes narrowed.
"It must be for relieving your pain or medicine for your wounds. Why are you asking such questions when you are a patient?" she berated Nora as she walked closer. "Now do as I said or the doctor would be angry." she spoke through gritted teeth when Nora smiled.
"Is that so?" she asked with a smile that could not express the reasons, "then i must take it. But why are you using the mask when it is not an operation theater?" She slowly rolled her sleeves and made a fist. Her nerves protruded but the nurder did not take a step closer.
"I have an infection. I do not want to transfer it to you and other patients." she touched her hands, looking for the nerves when Nora held her hand with the other hand.
"What are you.." the nurse struggled. Her face went white in an instant. And her knees started to give up. Nora smiled at the young nurse.
"Who sent you? If you tell me honestly I will let you go." she warned with a cold look on her face. The soft and innocent girl was nowhere to be seen. She was replaced by a gloomy and dark girl whose face did not match her expressions.
"My uncle forget to remind you have i have been trained for hours to fight with people like you.'' Even when the nurse did not reply, Nora confirmed it with the shock registering on the face of the girl.
"What is in the injection?" she asked with a cold tone. The nurse was already covered in cold sweat. Her face was red and struggling.
"Hemlock! He had asked me to mix hemlock in it." her voice came out struggling that made Nora's eyes colder. Ha! So he did not think twice before giving poison to her. If she would have been hurt here, Maximilian would have been accused.
Even if she did not care much about her life, she did care about the image of her savior.
"Ha! Hahahah! If you have brought this rare poison here. It is my duty to put it to good use." she whispered and picked up the injection from the bed where it had fallen and then she pointed the injection toward the nurse.
"Do not thank me for my thoughtfulness."
