Chereads / A Wanderer's Lies / Chapter 35 - Scenario [2]

Chapter 35 - Scenario [2]

Author's Note: A lot of people have been pointing out the issue of power scaling, and I just want to say that was a problem I too came across. But I like to think I solved it well.

I apologise in advance for the info dump.

"A Wanderer? It can't be."

"I thought they were a myth."

"Is this some kind of joke?"

The classroom erupted in chatter as they darted their eyes between Isaac and each other.

Not only was everyone in the class currently staring at the frozen Isaac, while some even sized him up from head to toe, but even the usually distant Lucy couldn't help but avert her gaze for a second, taking a glance.

However, after a few seconds, a voice spoke from amongst the chatter.

"To think the first Wanderer in decades would be such a disappointment. F-rank, what a joke." Daniel spoke, snapping out from his trance and returning to his usual cocky demeanour.

A pause erupted in the class and soon, a few people started to nod their heads, and it wasn't long until many others joined in.

"He's right."

"He could be from an SSS-Rank world, but he's still just an F-rank."

It wasn't long until everyone turned their heads, losing interest and returning to their usual chatter and ass-licking.

'For once, I'm glad to be amongst complete sheep.'

Isaac sat back down and he sighed, slowly turning his head as he stared daggers at the whistling Oliver.

"You'll pay for that."

Oliver feigned ignorance as he continued to sweat, whistling and looking around the room.

-Slam

The door slid open, quickly slamming shut as a black-haired female with white strands along random parts of her scalp, wearing a white kimono walked in.

With an elegant glide in her step, she stood behind the podium.

'Katlynn.'

Isaac glared.

He still hadn't forgotten what she'd done to him. Leaving him to die without batting an eye.

'I doubt she'd act the same way if I shared my completion rank.'

Unfortunately for Katlynn, there was one thing she didn't know about Isaac.

He was extremely petty. He wouldn't forget to take his revenge.

"Quiet! Everyone take your seats."

Perhaps it was the seductive yet strict nature in her voice, or the radical lion's glare in her eyes that made everyone instantly do as she commanded.

Maybe both. It was hard to tell.

"My name is Ms Wilson, and not only will I be acting as your homeroom teacher for the day, but I'll also be teaching the first lesson."

'For the day?'

"I'll be starting from the bottom going up. Rank Undisclosed, Oliver Clover." She started, raising her gaze and glancing toward the boy he spoke, "Present!"

Pausing for a second, she continued.

"Rank 769, Isaac…" Katlynn flipped the page as if she were looking for something.

'Nice.' Isaac grinned after hearing his rank. He was very happy with his number.

"Present!"

"What's the matter with your registration? Your second name is missing. Get that fixed by tomorrow." Without waiting for Isaac to retort, and without sparing him a glance, she continued.

The registration didn't last very long, seeing as the class didn't exceed more than 30 individuals.

"Rank 6, Ava Longfield."

"Present!"

"Rank 5, Amara Khan."

"Present!"

"Rank 4, Colt Hale."

"Present!"

"Rank 3, Daniel Euro."

"Present!"

"Rank 2, Lucy Vanheart."

"Present."

"Rank 1, Cain Saffron."

"Present!"

Each one of these individuals was given a strong stare before Katlynn moved on. It was clear she was somewhat interested in them.

"Now, to begin our lesson."

Katlynn wasted no time as she began her lecture.

"Who can tell me what a Scenario is?"

She asked the class, to which a few individuals raised their hands.

"You."

She pointed to Oliver as he stood.

"A Scenario is a test, or chance, depending on how you look at it, forced upon Inheritors. No one knows the reason why they happen, however, over time, Inheritors have started to accept it as a force of nature."

"Correct."

Oliver sat back down with a smile.

"Upon entering a Scenario, an Inheritor is transmigrated into their Character, given a quest to complete."

"What's important to know is each verse, as well as character, is assigned a rank. From F to SSS. Despite being possible, any character and verse above A+ rank is extremely rare, while both at the same time is a 1 in 100,000 chance."

Raising her hand, Ms Wilson pointed to Cain.

"Which makes your classmate here a miracle. Seeing as how the Inheritor population can be rounded up to about a million individuals, statistically speaking, there are only 9 others like him in the world. But of course, this is statistics. No one can know the true number."

Isaac nodded in agreement. This made sense so far. He didn't know the rank of the HxH verse, but it must have been high.

He refused to believe a world with wish-granting beings could be ranked any lower than A rank.

"Additionally, upon entering a Scenario, an Inheritor creates what we now know as a 'Timeline'." Ms Wilson drew a straight line across a whiteboard.

'Timeline?'

"Each Inheritor owns their independent Timeline, from their first Scenario to their last. Making it impossible for two Inheritors to meet at the same time in a single verse."

'No wonder knowledge is so valued. Knowing future events, learning of something which provides a power-up, a new timeline is like a blank slate for you to do as you please, assuming you have the knowledge.'

"Upon completing a Scenario, an Inheritor is allowed to return with a piece of their character as a reward. Whether it'd be a Weapon, Perks, Arts or Abilities."

"However, there's a catch."

Isaac's ears perked.

"Depending on your completion rank, your rewards can vary. You could be the Inheritor to an SSS rank character, however, an F rank completion rate will not only see you losing immense potential, but the chances of surviving your next scenario also severely lessen."

'That's interesting. In the end, it comes down to the completion rate. Unless your opponent has a flawless record, each Inheritor is on somewhat level ground.'

"Therefore, Character and Verse do indeed matter, however, they aren't everything." Ms Wilson continued, confirming Isaac's thoughts.

"For example, Arts, which you can learn in both scenarios and the real world, can play a large role in strength. This goes for Perks too, although they are time-consuming. You're better off focusing on other things and letting Perks awaken naturally."

'Time consuming? I was able to unlock a new perk in two hours.'

The more time that passed, the more Isaac was starting to realise the Zoldyck Genes were a gem.

"Of course, things like Stage, or how many Scenarios one has completed, also play a large role. The general consensus amongst Inheritors is that a higher-stage inheritor usually holds the upper hand in knowledge and power than a lower-stage inheritor. But there are exceptions."

"Ms Wilson, I have a question." Heather stood after being given a small nod.

"What's to stop an Inheritor from being summoned to the dinosaur age, or a time where the world is coming to an end? It's no secret Inheritors are summoned to a time relatively close to each other, but I've never known why."

"Good question, and there's a simple answer for this. The system, which is accessible to us all, calls them the 'Revolvers'."

Heather sat back down as Katlynn spoke.

"We Inheritors have long noticed one's timeline usually starts around the same time these Revolvers are active."

"An example of this would be the Revolver 'Naruto', from the verse with the same name. It isn't known why they are chosen, however, it's common to see these Revolvers become powerful individuals, rising to legendary status in their respective verse."

"Usually, all characters under A rank see their Timeline starting around the same time the Revolver are on the rise, however, there have been cases where A rank and above Inheritors find their Timeline starting before the Revolvers are even born, or long after their death."

"And finally, if an Inheritor fails to complete their Scenario, not only will they die, but a Terror, which is a monster manifestation of your Character, will appear from your corpse."

Katlynn, ending her lecture, paused as a voice came from the students before her.

"What about Possession?" Daniel asked with a grin, Katlynn glaring at him.

"Possession?"

"What's that?"

"Possession, also known as the occurrence of an Inheritor dying, but rather than a Terror, their true character is the one to possess their body, is a rare and near impossible event." Katlynn replied.

"Impossible? But there have been…" Before he could continue, he was cut off.

"That's enough!" A sort of Aura suffocated Daniel, as he couldn't help but flinch a little.

"Tsk" He clicked his teeth, turning his head.

Taking a glance at her watch, Katlynn paused for a second before looking up.

"That'll be it for today's class. Your homeroom teacher will be arriving in a few minutes for your next lesson." Katlynn announced, soon walking for the door.

"I heard this is our homeroom teacher's first year teaching. He's some sort of prodigy, but also really lazy. I can't seem to remember the name they had for him."

As Oliver spoke, Katlynn slid the door open, only for a figure to appear standing before her.

"Oh, hello Katlynn. I didn't expect you to be here so early." A flat and dragged voice came from the door, as everyone turned their heads.

"You've gotta be kidding me," Isaac muttered.

"Don't call me by my first name before the students." Katlynn snapped at the man as he walked into the class.

"Don't be so stuck up. You might scare the kids." Walking into the class was a tall man with an arched back, his hands in his pocket and wearing a neat black shirt, tucked into his suit pants.

Despite wearing glasses, they failed to hide the man's drooping eyes, as if he were close to falling asleep.

"The name wouldn't happen to be 'Sloth's Paradox', would it?" Isaac spoke, as Oliver's eyes widened in realisation.

"Yeah, it is! How did you know?"

Isaac paused as he let out a helpless smile.

"Just a guess."

"Hello class, my name is Orion, and I'm your homeroom teacher."

Orion spoke with a lethargic tone, making his words seem sarcastic, all while his forearms bulged through his folded shirt.

Hope that explanation is good enough. There'll be more to come, but until then...

GIMME DEM POWERSTONESSSS! (I'm actually quite surprised how far we've made it on the ranking lol)
