'Manual labor huh. You got anything else? Something that isn't homework?' sans thought.

Although this seemed like a good way to make money, sans was very lazy. If there was manual labor to be done, he would try his best to get out of it. This time however, he was truly stuck. He couldn't think of another way to get money in these foreign lands, and some of these tasks were very simple.

In the end, he decided to suck it up, and grabbed a flyer he thought was rather simple, and had what he thought was a good reward.

'manual labor - pick specific plants, 1000¥'

"I dunno what these funky looking Y's are, but I guess it'd be better not to question it." It was obviously a currency, but sans didn't want to arouse suspicion by asking weird questions.

He didn't know what kind of attention his status as an outsider would bring, and conflict was the last thing he wanted right now. So he would keep it as an open secret for now.

Folding the flyer and stuffing it in his pocket, sans turned around and headed out of the village, even though the sun was still high in the sky, it would be best to move now. After all, he didn't want to sleep outside again.

He passed through the front gates again, greeting the guards and telling them his reason for leaving. He waved and vanished behind the tree line, but not before flashing his left eye blue and leaving a small, unnoticeable distortion in space behind a tree.

Vreom

Sans was thankful for the flyer having more information on the back. he doubted that he would be able to find the plants listed here without some descriptions. He had already collected 3 of each type. He just hoped they didn't need to be collected carefully, as he just ripped them from the roots.

"*Yawn*, finally got all the ones I need. I haven't had to move this much since I went trick or treating with Papyrus." Sans recalled.

"Now all I gotta do is turn in these funky plants at the location listed here... 'Kirisame magic shop, the Forest of Magic'?"

Sans raised an eyebrow. Wasn't that the place where he woke up? But he never encountered a shop like that. How the hell would he find it?

Confused by the directions on the flyer, he opted to finally ask for help. With the plants stuffed in his pocket, he went back to the village.

He was about to walk straight back, but decided against it.

He would use a shortcut.

Fwoom

As sans walked out of the tree line naturally, the guards immediately went into high alert. "Whoa, no need to be so on guard pal!" sans waved his hands rapidly. The guards quickly recognized him and put down their spears.

"Ah, we apologize sir, it's been a rough couple of days, you see."

Breathing out a sigh of relief, he asked, "yeah, tell me about. But hey, I just got a quick question for ya."

"? Go ahead sir." The left guard, replied.

And so sans inquired about the location of the 'Kirisame magic shop', groaning in anguish, as he was informed that it was in the forest, on the OPPOSITE side of town. Sans was utterly tired of walking. He never had to do it this much since he had his shortcuts. Hell, he probably wouldn't have even lasted this long without his new body. Sans looked up and saw the sun was now lower than before, which he knew meant that the day was almost over.

Sans begrudgingly got a move on, desiring a nap more than anything else. But he has a job to do, plus he was rather hungry.

"A man can only sustain himself with berries for so long. And while CHECKing makes the risk virtually non-existent, I don't want to slip up and die cus I ate something funky."

Sans desparately wishes he could eat something other than berries right now, as he observed the stalls and stands with food. But alas, he has 0 paper.

While sans was deep in thought, contemplating the mechanics of being broke, he finally reached the other side of town.

Walking through the back gate, he encounters more guards. Explaining his business, they tell sans to return soon, as the yokai roam about at night.

Ah right, yokai. Another thing he has no idea about.

Sans remembers that humans are not the only people living in Gensokyo. There's vampires, ghouls, werewolves, the whole package.

Which is weird, because all the monsters should have been killed, or sealed in the great war. Were there stragglers?

Or are yokai just completely different? Rumia said something about being unable to exist in the outside world. Why is that? Why just Gensokyo? What are yokai?

Feeling another headache coming on, sans once again pushes those questions aside. He currently has no interest, and no reason to dig deeper.

Thanking the guards for the warning, sans walks away, but not before leaving another shortcut behind a tree.

Taking a road this time sans walks at a more brisk pace, and comes to a fork in the path. Just when he worried about which way to go, he noticed a piece of wood sticking out of the ground.

"Heh, Talk about giving me a sign."

Sans takes the right path and walks for a small while, before finally coming across a small shop with an open window, and a bell on its sill. Sans briefly ponders if he should approach the window, or the front door. He settles on knocking on the front door. Right now, he isn't a customer.

"Knock knock." Sans both says out loud, and knocks on the door. Immediately after doing so, he hears crashing and cursing inside, causing sans to chuckle. After waiting for a couple more moments, the door forcefully swings open, revealing a petite blonde girl in black and white maid-like attire.

"I DIDN'T STEAL IT, I SWEAR! IM ONLY BORROWING IT FOR A WHILE!" Sans stares blankly at the girl in front of him before speaking.

"You're supposed to say who's there." He says while grinning. "Anyway, I'm guessing you're miss Kirisame?"

"Oh, Yeah, that's me. What're ya here for? Ya gotta ring the bell if you need my services y'know." She says pointing to the window sill and bell. Sans shakes his head. Passing her the flyer, realization passes across her face.

"Oohh, you're here for that!" She realizes. Taking the mushrooms out of his pocket, he presents them to her in the form a crumpled ball. "Hope you weren't expecting more grace from me. I didn't exactly have mush-room to work with."

Laughing out loud, Marisa takes the mushroom ball and tosses it back into her house. "Hahah! Don't worry, I'm not much for grace myself.'

'I could tell.' sans thinks to himself. But not exactly trying to offend his employer, he asks about his pay.

"Yeah, yeah, I got it... Somewhere around here..." She says looking back at her home. Looking over her shoulder, sans is appalled at the sheer volume of objects lying around. It almost looked like an episode of hoarders.

"Erm, this might take a while, you wanna come inside?" Marisa offers.

.

Sans finds himself sitting at a low table that's partially sunken in the floor. He saw these in alphys' animes, a 'horigotatsu' was it?

Crash

It was quite a novel experience, when he saw these in anime, he thought they would be pretty uncomfortable in real life. But he was happy to be proven wrong.

Crumple

While the majesty was slightly dampened by the mess that was on the table, it was still pretty cool. Sans wonders if alphys would be freaking out right now.

Crack

'crack??' At that sound, sans turns his head at the noise that has been accompanying his thoughts for a while now.

Marisa was sorting through her mysterious and, from what the first she said to him was, likely stolen items. It was mostly books, but there seemed to be the odd artifact or tool.

Looking at her back, sans thought she looked a little bit like those waterfall scavengers, sorting through the useful, and useless junk. It was a rather humorous connection.

"Ah! Found it!"

Marisa held up a brown bag that jingled when it moved. Opening the brown bag she started counting something. As sans patiently waited for her to be done, Marisa started to get annoyed.

"100.. 200.. 300.. 500.. wait why'd I skip 400? 100.. 200..... 750.. wait that's 100¥. Argh!"

Bursting out in anger, Marisa just slammed the bag on the table.

"Just take it all!"

'All of it?'

Sans was slightly surprised. She just gave up and threw the whole bag at him? Wasn't this too much?

As Marisa was grumbling something about liking borrowing(stealing) more, sans spoke up.

"You sure you don't wanna try again? I'm pretty sure this is too much." Sans tried to appeal, but to not success.

"Nah, It's fine. That's not my money anyway, so whatever is in it belongs to you."

'what do you mean not your money? Did you steal it??'

"Uh, sure, alright." Sans stoop up from the horigotatsu. Dusting himself off, he put his hand in his pocket, and then held it out for a handshake.

"The names sans, nice to meetcha." He found himself saying this often, which sans thought was a good thing.

Marisa smirked and accepted sans' handshake.

"Marisa Kirisame, an Ordinary Magician. Nice to meet you too-"

Pfffftttt

A fart sound rang out.

Marisa looked at the hand she was holding, finally noticing a strap around it.

Releasing the handshake, sans chuckled.

"Heheh, the classic whoopee cushion in the hand trick! It's always funny." Sans waves his hand, revealing the toy he got from his pocket.

Marisa takes a second to catch up before-

"Pfft, Bwahahahahah! Aw man, that's awesome! What is that thing!"

"A tool from my line of work." Sans said nonchalantly.

"Jeez, that's gotta be awesome! If I had that, I could prank so many people." Marisa's eyes sparkled as she imagined the face a certain shrine maiden would make.

"Well, it's not all that great, so don't gas it up that much." The skeleboy said while shrugging.

"*Snicker* alright get outta here you knucklehead! You got your pay, now shoo!"

Unfortunately, Marisa forced sans out before he could crack any more jokes, so they exchanged a couple more words before parting ways.

As sans was walking away from the house, he opened the bag of money he was rewarded with, before his eyes went black with shock.

Inside was silver colored coins, either marked with a 100 or a 500, and that funky Y. The bag was full of em, and a quick rummage revealed that there was approximately 10000¥ in the bag.

10 times more than what he asked for.

"Hah..." Sans held his head. Sometimes he can't tell if he has the best luck or the worst luck. Either way, sans gained a lot out of this, and it truly perplexed him.

Looking up at the sky that had turned dark, sans sighed again. Another thing he's been doing a lot since he came here. He quietly admired the night sky, the TRUE night sky, and all of its authentic stars.

He always did like his post in waterfall for this reason. The imitation of the night sky always soothed him, but compared to the real thing, he may as well been staring at the ground.

As he turned around, he noticed the presence of another celestial body.

'of course, the sun must be with its twin, the moon.'

The unobstructed visage of the moon, that couldn't before be seen due to the tree foliage, was dazzling. Not quite as radiant as its sibling, but unique and enjoyable in its own way.

The twin celestials that watch over the earth, were the subject of many religions according to some history books, but sans, never having seen it himself, couldn't understand why.

Now he does.

Managing to tear his eyes away, sans yawned, and took another glance at the bag in his hand. It should be enough for a night at an inn. Stuffing it in his pocket, sans began to truly feel like he could live, like he could keep his promise.

And that filled him with DETERMINATION.
