Chapter 17 - A Lost Child

Destiny's POV

Daria's face brightened up like sunshine on a summer day as she linked her arm with Red and led him to the dining area since we were about to eat dinner before he showed up.

"What brings you here, Red?" She asked with excitement, and my heart was racing, afraid my ex would tell her the truth

"I want to borrow Destiny for a while; I promised to bring her back at a reasonable time," Red answered, and Daria was eyeing me with a quizzical look on her face as I shrugged my shoulders, pretending I had no idea why Red was in our house.

"Oh, that is nice; you can bring her back late. Even if you keep her for days, I would not mind." My nanny replied with a mischievous grin on her face, and my face paled as I looked at her horrified.

"Daria, I only asked Red to get some of my things before we leave the city. Don't let your mind wander and think of anything hilarious. Red and I were done and stopped hoping we would get back together because it would never happen. Not in a million years." I declared, and her smile vanished in thin air instantly as her face saddened.

Red's face was apathetic. I didn't see remorse or emotion, making me more bitter.

"You should eat, Red," she said, trying to change the subject, and got herself busy by serving Red the food.

"I always loved your cooking, Daria," Red spoke out as his ten thousand megawatt smile stretched out on his face, showing his perfect white teeth.

"Thank you, Red. I miss you so much. You should come and visit us sometimes." She responded, mirroring Red's smile, while I lowered my head and started eating my dinner in silence.

Red's laughter reverberated in our tiny house as he talked with Daria like I didn't exist, and I hated and loved his laughter at the same time. I missed how he laughed at my stupid jokes and little mishaps as he brought me closer to him, wrapping his strong arms around my waist.

I quickly poured cold water into my glass and drank it in one gulp, hoping my body would calm down. I should not be thinking about our good memories together since they have been overshadowed by anger and pain.

Daria left us alone as I cleaned the table and washed the dishes while Red sat at the dining table drinking his tea, watching me from behind. I felt conscious since I was still wearing short shorts and a spaghetti tank top; my long legs were on full display.

But I knew he would not be affected by my presence anymore since he now had Carmie in his life, with whom he had intimate moments together, and I tried to forget the image I saw that day by concentrating on the plates.

"Are you okay, Destiny? It seemed like the utensils had done something terrible to you." I heard Red's voice so close behind me that I dropped the spoons and forks in the sink.

The hair on the back of my neck stood up, and goosebumps covered my entire body instantly as he moved closer. I could feel the heat radiating from his muscular frame.

I cringed when he held my hand, and it felt like my world stood still as I felt butterflies swarming in my belly.

"Let me help you," he said before he snatched the sponge from my hand while his other hand was on my waist as he gently pushed me to the side.

"I can do this," I replied.

"I don't think you can finish washing the dishes without breaking the plates." He responded as he started washing them while I was left dumbfounded.

I wished to move away from him, but I didn't, as if my feet were cemented on the floor, and I stood beside him, feeling like a fool. The deafening silence was killing me as I watched him doing the chore, looking so hot and sexy.

"Have fun, guys!" Daria said as she sent us to Red's car.

"It is not a date, Daria," Red answered, and I could feel the pang on my chest.

"Yes, Daria, it isn't a date. Just go to bed ahead of me; I have my keys." I added, and she pouted her lips, and I wished to laugh at her immature behavior.

Daria waved her hand as Red drove away from our driveway, and the ride going to our mansion felt like forever. I missed riding with Red in my car or his car, but tonight, it felt so different knowing we had drifted apart after he betrayed me with Carmie.

I could feel the pain of his betrayal every time I looked at his face, but I had no choice; I needed his help, and I had to lower my pride.

"Why are we here in your house?" I asked, shocked that he pulled over in front of their house instead of our mansion.

"We can't just barge in there," he replied as he unfastened his seatbelt.

"Should I stay here?" I asked, confused.

"No, you are coming into our house with me." He responded, and I wished to protest, but I obeyed and climbed out of his car, saying nothing.

He opened the main door with his key and motioned me to follow him in silence as he put his finger over his lips.

I missed everything around here, but my heart suddenly felt heavy as we climbed the staircase. I remembered the day Carmie messed up my life.

"I should stay here outside," I said in more than a whisper as we reached his bedroom door.

"You are going inside with me," he responded, and pulled me by the hand, and dragged me inside.

I sealed my eyes closed as my breathing increased, and I felt my face turning crimson. I don't know if it was because I was alone with Red or it was because I remembered the episode I witnessed inside his room with my stepsister being naked.

"I don't want my parents to know you are here." He said, and I gave him a questioning look as I raised my eyebrows.

"They are fond of me, Red. Your parents adored me, and why don't you want me to see them?" I timidly asked.

"Destiny, I already helped you with this; please don't make things more complicated than they already are," he responded, pulling out something from his cabinet.

"You should wear that," Red added after he threw some clothes onto his bed, and my eyes widened as I realized it was a maid's outfit that consisted of a black dress, a white apron, and a headpiece.

"I can't take you out there with those clothes; you need to act as if you were one of the maids so it would be easy to get inside. Make sure your head is down all the time." My ex continued, and my objection died in my mouth as I looked at the seriousness on his face.

"I will be outside; I will be back in fifteen minutes," Red added as his cell phone rang.

"Hello, Love," he answered his phone call before he left his bedroom, and I had to take a deep breath and keep my tears from falling.

I gradually took a step closer to his king-sized bed, feeling sick. I knew he had been dating my step-sister after I found him on the same bed having an intimate moment, but it was still hard to accept that he didn't even feel sorry about what happened to our relationship.

I picked up the maid's uniform and went to the bathroom to change. I almost laughed when I saw my reflection in the mirror. I looked cute in it, and I felt naughty thinking I would be sneaking into my own house

"Are you ready?" Red asked the moment he came back. And his eyes scanned my body from head to toe, and I could see the same effect on him. I knew he had found me adorable with my costume as I caught his endearing little grin, but he quickly tried to hide it by scowling at me.

"What?" I asked, feeling pissed that he answered Carmie's call even if I was with him.

"Nothing," he answered as his gaze lingered on my face.

"Let us wait for a while, I am sure your father is still in his study," Red added, and I suddenly felt conscious that I had to stay with him in the same room.

"Can I go to the balcony?" I asked.

"No, you can't risk displaying yourself. Someone might see you." He replied.

"Oh, are you that afraid with your girlfriend?" I asked, and his face darkened.

"I am not afraid of anyone; I am worried that someone will see you." He replied with irritation as he walked to the sofa and sat leaning his back on the backrest while his hand was on the armrest.

"You can rest on my bed while killing time," he declared. I didn't want to be near him, so I lay on his bed and inhaled his familiar, manly, intoxicating scent that stuck on his sheets and pillowcases.

I groaned in frustration as I stood up from his bed and went to his bathroom. I smiled as I saw his bathtub,

"What are you doing here, Destiny?" Red's voice echoed in my head, and I felt disoriented as I opened my eyes to where I was; then, as I moved my head, I saw Red sitting on the edge of the tub near the faucet with arms crossed over his chest.

"I am sorry if I dozed off," I responded as I quickly stood up and fixed my hair with my fingers.

"I couldn't believe you chose to sleep here in the tub than in my bed," he said with dismay as he got up while I remained silent.

"Get ready; we will be leaving in five minutes." He added before he walked out of the bathroom.

I was left with uneasiness. I wished to get my father's DNA sample, but I couldn't deny deep in my core that I badly wanted to see my father. Behind my facade as a grown woman was still a lost child.
