The people living in the Lower Hill weren't oblivious to what was happening in the Upper Hill. Those who lived close to the Upper Hill immediately noticed the fires rising from the ascending slopes of stone buildings.
"What is happening, Fredren?" Adelin asked as she stepped closer to the window. She wrapped herself in thin night clothes.
"I think the city is under attack."
"What! By whom? We're in the middle of the country; how could they reach this far... unless Indel has fallen," Adelin said in panic.
Fredren shivered as he listened to what his wife had said, but he immediately rejected his worries. "Don't be so foolish. Indel wouldn't fall within a day... but start putting our clothes in our cases. Lock all the doors for now. We must prepare for the worst."
