Barbara got out holding her chest. The pain in her heart made it impossible for her to breathe. She felt as if someone was choking her, taking her breath slowly. Richard's voice before she left kept ringing in her mind.
"We will get married when you return."
"We will hold our wedding."
"I will wait for you."
She couldn't shake off the memory of those piercing words, like a knife to her heart. The pain was so intense that her entire body seemed to surrender to it. Tears welled up in her eyes and cascaded down her cheeks, a never-ending stream of sorrow and betrayal. Did he deceive her all along? Did he concoct a scheme to make her leave so he could break off their engagement and betroth himself to Aurora?
