In the dimly lit chambers of the palace, Kristie paced anxiously. The news of Barbara being caught the previous night surprised her, but seeing the imperial knights circulating her bedchamber made it clear that the matter involved both of them. She kept her composure, refusing to break into the prison to see Barbara until she knew what was happening.
Suddenly, the door swung open, revealing Crown Prince Florian, his expression grave. "Kristie," he said, his tone low but firm. "I'm sorry for not being able to do anything." His voice cracked with emotion.
The last few days of treatment had been difficult for Florian, and he could barely stand. His father, the king, had acted unilaterally, putting Kristie under arrest and imprisoning Barbara as well. Florian had even been turned away when he tried to visit the king.
"It doesn't matter," Kristie replied, trying to maintain her calm. "Is there any news?"
