Chapter 23 - Night Shift Chat

"It's time for the Family Feud! Introducing the Boyd family, ready for action and adventure! And the McCarthy family, dressed to the nines! On your marks! Let's start the FAMILY FEUD!!!! Here's your host - STEVE HARVEY!"

Kai audibly groaned when the first sound he was greeted with upon returning to the nurse's station was the introduction to Family Feud. He knew he shouldn't have gone outside. Someone had taken the opportunity to seize the television remote and turn it to the Game Show Network.

Jack was seated in his wheelchair in front of the television, with his family seated in chairs next to him. The old man was holding a bucket of Wendy's chicken nuggets and was chowing down.

"These bitches slap," Jack's garbled speech could be heard between chews.

"Where did you hear that phrase, Dad?" A short, fat lady asked him.

"Kaylee. Kaylee said that word. "

Kaylee was Jack's 15-year-old granddaughter, who was on her phone, oblivious to the world.

Nancy was at the nurse's station with a look of sheer disgust. She looked up at Kai and rolled her eyes.

"Family Feud is so lame," Nancy said.

"I know," Kai sighed as he looked at her.

"Do you ever wonder how these people even had sex?" Nancy whispered, pointing at Jack.

"Not really," Kai answered. "I can't say I have ever had that thought."

"Really?" Nancy asked.

"They did it. What else is there?" Kai asked.

"It's disgusting," she mumbled.

"Maybe we shouldn't judge the elderly," Kai responded.

"You know what's more disgusting?" Nancy asked him.

"Do I want to know?" Kai sighed.

"I've heard the stories," Nancy whispered.

"I've heard Jack likes to watch, you know, indecent films."

"Okay?" Kai shrugged.

"Okay?" Nancy frowned. "He beats his meat with his door wide open."

"That's pretty gross," Kai said, raising a brow. "We don't get paid enough to deal with that."

"Right?" Nancy exclaimed. "How does he even do it? You think he can see past his belly?"

"Nancy, please," Kai groaned.

"Sorry," Nancy apologized. "I'm a little grossed out."

Kai groaned. "You're the one who started this. I-I'm behind. I need to finish my med pass."

Kai spent the next hour passing the rest of the medication. It was after 10 p.m. when he finally finished. He returned to the nurse's station and took a seat. He logged onto the computer and began to complete his charting.

After a while, he felt a pair of arms wrap around him. He knew exactly who it was. He was happy to be hugged but knew he shouldn't be hugged at work.

"What are you doing?" Kai asked as Liam hugged him from behind.

"I'm hugging you," Liam grinned, tightening his arms around Kai.

"I figured," Kai sighed.

"Am I making you uncomfortable?" Liam whispered.

"Not really," Kai stated.

"Good," Liam grinned, placing his chin on top of Kai's head.

"I have to work," Kai groaned. "It's a bit distracting."

"I know," Liam smiled and nuzzled his nose into Kai's hair.

"Liam," Kai sighed.

"Hm?" Liam asked.

"Why are you acting like a cat?" Kai chuckled.

"I'm not," Liam stated.

"You are," Kai nodded.

"So?" Liam asked.

"So, you're being weird," Kai noted.

"I'm not," Liam grumbled. "I'm just happy to see you."

"I'm glad you're happy to see me. I guess."

"I always am." Liam smiled and placed his chin on top of Kai's head again.

"Are you saying you're not always happy to see me?" Kai frowned.

"Of course I'm happy to see you, Kai," Liam stated in a serious tone.

"That's good."

"You're so cute," Liam grinned. "I want to squeeze your cheeks."

"Why?" Kai sighed.

"Because you're so cute," Liam grinned. "Do you not have mirrors?"

"No," Kai sighed. "I don't tend to stare at myself."

"How unfortunate!" Liam sighed. "If I were you, I would stare at myself."

"Oh, shut up!" Kai laughed. "You totally would."

"You're so cute," Liam stated again.

"Thanks," Kai said sarcastically.

"You're welcome," Liam sighed contently.

"Liam," Kai groaned and facepalmed himself.

"I'm serious," Liam told him. "I'm very serious."

"Whatever," Kai mumbled.

"Do you have any idea how cute you are?" Liam asked as he brushed his fingers against Kai's waist.

"Stop!" Kai frowned.

"You are so adorable," Liam whispered.

"Okay, now you're just making fun of me," Kai groaned.

"Kai, you are cute. Deal with it."

"Shut up."

"He's right," Nancy said, turning around to look at the pair. "You're cute, Kai. You're both cute."

"Thanks," Liam smiled.

"Nancy," Kai frowned.

"Just telling the truth," she said, shrugging and turning back to the computer. "Kai's cuter, though. I like my men pretty."

"Thank you," Liam grinned.

"Don't encourage him," Kai warned.

"Aw, but she's right," Liam smiled and kissed the top of Kai's head. "So pretty."

Liam pulled away and took a seat next to Nancy to help her with the nursing assistant charting.

Kai wouldn't admit it out loud, but he was a bit sad to not be in Liam's embrace anymore. He was half tempted to just invite him to sleep over at his apartment after work, but he was a little nervous. He wanted to be close to Liam, but he wasn't sure he was ready to take it further. It wasn't something he had really thought about.

He just knew he wouldn't be able to say no if Liam started something.

He was so far gone.

The night continued to be uneventful, with no major issues, save for Jack needing assistance with his bathroom breaks along with the usual call lights.

At around 11:45 p.m., Liam went off on break to check up on his mom.

Nancy stayed behind. A news program played in the background, which got the two's attention. Kai and Nancy got into a discussion regarding the most recent season of RuPaul's Drag Race because of a clip from the news.

"I was so pissed when Katya didn't win," Nancy admitted.

"Same," Kai nodded.

"I was so upset. But she was robbed," Nancy agreed.

"Trixie Mattel was so good too, though," Kai sighed.

"Totally. She won, so it's fair, but I was so pissed." Nancy smacked her hand on the desk.

"You think the judges had a problem with Katya's political stance?" Kai wondered.

"Oh, definitely," Nancy agreed.

"Right. She was too liberal." Kai nodded.

"Exactly. They had an issue."

"And Trixie Mattel is straight, which also worked against her," Kai frowned as he thought about it. "

"You know that was a factor," Nancy frowned.

"Right," Kai said. "The judges are straight and probably not very accepting."

"Yeah, exactly," Nancy groaned.

"They had to give it to the straight white woman," Kai continued. "So typical."

"Right," Nancy frowned.

"At least they let her be a finalist," Kai sighed.

"I still love Katya."

"Same," Kai nodded.

"Who's your favorite drag queen?" Nancy asked.

Kai frowned. "I can't pick."

"Same."

"Katya is the best."

"For sure," Nancy agreed.

"She was robbed," Kai sighed. "What a pity."

Liam walked back down the hall and raised a brow. "What the hell are you two talking about?"

"RuPaul's Drag Race," they both responded in unison.

They both then gasped in unison.

"You guys are weird," Liam said as he sat down in the spare office chair.

"It's a good show," Kai explained.

"Right," Liam sighed.

"What did your mom say?" Kai asked in a concerned tone.

"Nothing new!" Liam frowned. "She's going to be okay. I guess I have to wait till tomorrow to learn anything new. I hope she leaves Larry after this shit."

"I'm sorry," Kai mumbled.

"It's alright," Liam said, forcing a smile. "Don't worry about it."

"Liam," Nancy said, looking at him with a sympathetic expression.

"It's fine," Liam insisted.

"Alright," she nodded. "But we're here for you."

"Can we talk about something else?" Liam asked.

"What else do you want to talk about?" Nancy asked.

"I don't know." Liam shrugged.

"Did you see the new season of Riverdale?" Nancy asked.

"No," Kai responded.

"That show sucks," Nancy laughed.

"I like it," Liam laughed. "It's fun. My mom used to read the comics."

"That's because it's so gay," Kai laughed. "That's why you like it."

"Yeah?" Liam frowned. "You guys were talking about RuPaul."

"It is," Nancy agreed. "Riverdale is gay."

"Archie is so gay," Kai added.

"Betty and Veronica are a power couple," Nancy said.

"Jughead and Archie are too cute together," Kai grinned.

Liam rolled his eyes. The two of them being together was too much. Kai was like a catty woman around Nancy. No wonder the two got along so well.

"Let's do a bed check," Liam said to Nancy.

"Why?" She asked.

"Because we haven't changed them all night," Liam nodded as he stood up.

"Fine."

Nancy got up and followed Liam.

After a moment, Liam returned and sighed. "I have Judy in the bathroom. Will you help me change her linens?"

"Yeah," Kai agreed.

Liam gathered the fresh linens and brought them to the room. They stripped off the old linens and placed them in a trash bag to take to the soiled room, and then began to put the clean sheets on the bed.

Kai had to admit, it was pretty amusing watching Liam try to change the sheets. He was tall, and his limbs were long. He had a hard time reaching the corners of the mattress. He couldn't help but chuckle when Liam would have to go down on his hands and knees to stretch the sheet.

He watched the muscles in his back tense as he struggled with the bed. He had a sudden urge to run his fingers through Liam's hair.

Such lucious, black hair.

He knew it was inappropriate, but he couldn't help but think of Liam as sexy at the moment. Liam's shirt had ridden up his back, revealing his pale skin and toned back. It was his first real glimpse at his bare skin.

It was making Kai feel hot and bothered.

"Are you okay, Kai?"

Kai blinked, shaking himself out of his daydream. A very inappropriate daydream. It was one he never thought he would have about another man.

"You were staring at me."

"Sorry," Kai mumbled.

"Is everything okay?" Liam asked, turning around.

"I was just thinking."

"About?" Liam smirked. He knew Kai was thinking about him.

"You," Kai admitted.

"Why?" Liam stared into Kai's eyes.

"You're attractive," Kai said, looking down, breaking eye contact. "And I saw your back. I want to touch it."

Liam grinned. He was happy Kai was opening up to him more instead of just calling him dumb names when he got embarrassed.

"Can I ask you something?" Kai asked, tilting his head.

"What is it?" Liam asked.

Kai took a deep breath. He didn't know what had overcome him. It wasn't like he hadn't slept next to him before. The two had cuddled to sleep one night earlier in the week. Surely, his request would seem innocent enough.

He didn't necessarily want to cross any lines, but he really wanted to touch Liam and be close to him like that again.

"Will you sleep over at my place after work? While we sleep?"
