Chapter 21 - Family Feud

"You okay?" Liam asked, looking down at the blonde.

"Yeah," Kai nodded.  "Why?"

"What are you up to right now?"

"Just thinking," Kai responded.

"About what?" Liam asked curiously.

"Life and living."

"Interesting," Liam said. "I have to go give Chester a bath. Want to join?"

"Sounds exciting," Kai said, shaking his head. "But no, I still have meds to pass."

"It's not," Liam sighed.

Kai patted him on the back. He knew how Chester felt when his bathing time came. He knew it would be easier with two people, but he didn't have the time to spare.

"See you," Kai told him.

The blonde continued his way down the hall. His mind was racing with thoughts. He stopped at the cart and blankly stared down at it.

"Kai!" Nancy yelled as she walked up the hall.

"What now?" Kai frowned.

"Jack's kids are coming by tonight," Nancy informed him. "We need to clean him up."

"Shit," Kai mumbled. "Of course they are."

"Yup," she nodded. "Brian wants us to do a walk through and make sure his room is tidy and we clean him up."

"He's always dirty," Kai sighed. "That's an impossible task. They know he's a gross old man."

Nancy shrugged. "It's not right, but he doesn't want to shower or bathe."

"I wish we could force him," Kai groaned.

"So do I," she agreed.

Kai had to admit that he was looking forward to seeing how Jack would react to his kids visiting during the evening. The last time they decided to visit Jack, he told them he was going to devour their souls and sell them to the devil.

Kai could use a laugh.

"Is this really necessary?"

"Unfortunately," she stated.

"Fuck," Kai grumbled. "When are they getting here?"

"Around nine," Nancy facepalmed herself.

Kai checked his watch. It was 8:15. They didn't have very much time to force the fat old man to take a shower.

"Damn it," Kai mumbled.

"Go see him," Nancy urged. "I'll meet you."

Kai went into Jack's room. He saw the man lying on the bed, staring up at the television, which was blaring loud enough to make the entire unit hear.

The old man looked at Kai and grunted. All Kai could see was Jack's penis dangling between his two amputated legs, tucked underneath his huge belly.

Kai grumbled to himself. He knew Brian had probably sent Nancy a text and was still out smoking. It would have been helpful if Brian were actually in the building to help them, but he knew that was wishful thinking. Even if Brian were in the building, he would come up with an excuse not to help.

"Jack!" Kai began. "I have to clean you before your kids get here."

"Fuck off," Jack huffed.

"I will not," Kai replied. "You need to get cleaned up. Can we give you a bed bath?."

"I don't want to be touched."

"It's either we clean you up or your family has to see you in this state."

"I don't care," Jack muttered.

Kai sighed. The man was impossible.

"Jack, please."

"I'm not getting a fucking bath," Jack growled.

"I'll have Nancy give you one."

"I'm not letting a woman touch me!"

Kai rolled his eyes. He wanted to kick the man in the balls, but he was a professional and would never think of harming a resident. Even if the resident was stinky, demented, and uncooperative.

Kai could smell Jack's bad breath. It smelled worse than an ashtray. He could tell he hadn't allowed anyone to brush his teeth in months. He wondered what type of ecosystem was festering inside the man's mouth.

"We're going to clean you," Kai stated. "We're not taking no for an answer."

"Fuck you," Jack snapped.

"You're being difficult."

"I don't give a shit," Jack replied.

"Let me put it this way," Kai began. "You can have a nice shower and allow us to clean you, or I can make sure Brian has an extremely bad night. It's your choice."

"How are you going to make his night bad?"

"He's the supervisor. I'm going to call the director and have her talk to him. Maybe I'll even ask her to check the schedule, see what his next day off is, and move it. Maybe she will make him take extra on-call days or write him up."

"That's stupid," Jack muttered.

"Yeah, well," Kai began. "It's what I'm going to do."

Jack grumbled to himself and tossed the blankets onto the floor. He had agreed. Somehow, it was a success.

"Fine," he sighed.

For some strange reason, Jack was fond of Brian. Kai didn't have a clue why. Of all the nurses and nursing assistants that worked at Shady Pines, Brian was the one Jack chose to like.

It didn't bother the blonde, though. He was sort of glad Jack didn't like him. It would make his job awkward.

What he wasn't happy about was that Brian wasn't doing it himself.

Nancy walked in, holding a few bath basins and towels. She put on some gloves and walked up to the bed with a smirk plastered on her face.

"You ready?" She asked, looking down at Jack.

"No," Jack frowned.

Kai sighed. He put on some gloves while Jack yelled out several curses. He didn't want to do this, but he knew Nancy needed help with the man.

"I hate you both," Jack mumbled.

"We're not here for your enjoyment," Kai responded. "We're here to help."

"I don't fucking care."

"Then why are you agreeing to this?"

"Because I want you two out of my room."

"Got it," Kai nodded. "I want me out of your room, too."

Kai began washing Jack's stump after he removed the dressings. It wasn't a pretty sight. They were covered in a thick, yellow crust, which was as hard as a rock. He had a few sores on his thighs, and it was obvious the man hadn't bothered to clean himself in months.

Nancy took his hands and began cleaning his nails. She gently wiped his hands with a soapy towel.

"Why are you being so nice?" Jack asked.

"I'm just doing my job," she stated.

"I don't think that's why," Jack said.

"Just stop and let us finish," Kai groaned.

"I'm going to sell you to Satan," Jack yelled out. "He'll eat your dick."

"That's nice," Kai replied.

"You'll like it," Jack said. "Satan is a top."

"I bet," Nancy wiggled her brows at Kai.

Kai felt like flipping Nancy off, but restrained himself as they were providing resident care.

"It's a lie," Jack began. "I'm not into gays."

"Sure." Nancy nodded.

"Evil," Jack continued. "I'm not evil."

"Okay, Jack," Kai sighed. "Gay people aren't evil."

"They're just people," Nancy mumbled.

"Evil people," Jack stated. "Satan will have your dick for dinner. Gobble it up like a turkey."

"That's nice," Kai mumbled.

Nancy was laughing at the comment. Kai had to admit that the old man's comments were hilarious. He wondered if Jack had been a religious nut when he was younger. He couldn't understand why so many old folks thought homosexuality was a sin.

"Are you a gay person?" Jack asked Kai.

"No," Kai said in a dry tone.

"Bullshit," Jack snapped. "You and that other guy are together."

"What?" Kai scoffed.

"Don't deny it."

"I'm not," Kai stated. "Stop."

"I figured," Jack nodded. "I have a sixth sense."

"Is that why you can tell that I'm not gay?" Kai snickered when he made the comment.

"Yes," Jack nodded.

"Okay," Kai stated.

"Are you done?"

"Almost," Kai told him.

"Then go the fuck away."

"Jack, please."

"I have a headache," he whined. "My ass itches. My toes hurt. Satan is coming for that booty."

Nancy was washing Jack down as she laughed her ass off. Word always got around fast in a nursing home, and somehow Jack even knew about the relationship between the two men. Though it didn't seem like Jack knew what he was even saying.

Kai was just thankful Jack was easily confused and that he could redirect the subject.

"There," Kai told him.

"Go now," he said.

"I need to cover your stump," Kai stated.

"Just get the fuck out of here," Jack grumbled.

"We can't."

"Why?"

"You need your dressings changed."

"I can do that," Jack told him.

The blonde nurse sprayed the wounds with the cleanser, then patted them dry with the gauze.

Kai gently wrapped Jack's stumps and made sure the dressings were snug. He didn't want the bandages to slip off and fall down. The last thing he wanted to do was change those dressings again.

"Done," Kai stated. "We'll leave. Enjoy your visit."

"Finally."

"You smell better now." Nancy smiled.

"I hope your soul gets eaten by a demon," Jack yelled at the pair, waving his fist in the air.

"It will," she smirked.

"Fuck you," he replied.

"Bye, Jack," Kai said.

"Die," Jack growled.

Kai rolled his eyes and walked out of the room, with Nancy behind him. They both sighed with relief in synchrony. They were glad to be done with the bath. Somehow, his room was not a mess, and Nancy was able to pick up the trash while Kai tended to the wounds.

"So," Nancy smirked at Kai. "Eaten a dick recently?"

"Fuck off," Kai groaned as he walked back to the medication cart.

"You love me," she winked.

"Sure, I do." Kai sighed.

Nancy chuckled. She loved teasing Kai.

Liam was watching TV in the common area. He was watching a reality show, which was a big mistake because the elderly residents were complaining about the show. They didn't seem to understand the concept of reality television.

"Who is this stupid person?" One of the old men asked.

"This is the Kardashians," Liam informed him.

"Are they the ones from the O.J. Simpson trial?"

"No," Liam sighed.

"Well," the man grumbled. "I don't like it."

"Too bad," Liam shrugged.

The man was a pain in the ass, anyway. He was a former lawyer who had made a shit ton of money. Now, he was in a nursing home, suffering from severe dementia, and was a total pain in the ass.

He was the prince of Shady Pines, though, according to management.

"Can you turn it to the news?"

"I guess," Liam groaned. "The news."

"Reality TV is stupid," Kai agreed as Liam switched it to the news.

"This is boring," another woman sighed.

"Too bad," Kai responded.

"Can you play the lottery?" She asked. "I want to see if they call me numbers."

"No," Kai stated.

"Can you put on Family Feud?" The former lawyer asked. "I want to watch Steve Harvey."

For some reason, the elderly really liked Steve Harvey. Kai couldn't stand him. He had read articles about the man online, and none of them said nice things.

"No," Kai frowned.

"Why not?"

"Because," Kai sighed. "You need to know what's happening in the world."

"Please," the old man begged. "Steve Harvey!"

"Steve Harvey!" The woman repeated. "Steve. Steve. Steve. Steve."

"No," Kai responded. He was not going to put on Family Feud.

"This is crap," the man replied.

"I'll be glad when this shift is over," Nancy said.

"Me too," Kai nodded. "Nine more grueling hours."

The elderly people were complaining about the channel but eventually gave up and were silent. It was a miracle. They were never silent.

Liam sighed and stood next to Kai. "Let's go on a smoke break. I need a cigarette."

Nancy grinned and looked between the two. She would handle getting some of them to bed while they took a break.

"What?" Kai asked her.

"Go on, lover boy," Nancy hummed. "You have ten minutes."

Kai sighed. He wouldn't normally step out at this time, but he figured he needed a breather before Jack's family made it in.

"Let's go," Liam nodded and began down the hall, with Kai following close behind.

Ten minutes. Even Kai felt like he needed a cigarette, and he had never smoked a single one in his life.

He also would take any chance he could have to be alone with Liam.
