Chapter 6 - A Talk

Alexander's POV

Alexander couldn't believe what he was hearing. It was what he was waiting for, but he couldn't help but feel a little weird. Why was she accepting so fast, and why did she sound so close to tears?

"Are you okay?" He asked, concerned.

"What, yeah, I am. I agree with your proposal. I'll be...I'll be your fake wife," she murmured, her voice shaking.

" Are you sure about this? You don't have to agree to this," he said, even though it hurt him to say it. He wanted her to be a willing participant, and she didn't sound so willing right now.

"What? I thought...I thought you wanted me to agree," she asked, confused.

"Yes, yes, I do. You know what? How about we meet today for lunch by 2? to talk about it better," he told her.

"Um okay...Yeah"

"Okay, see you by 2; I'll pick you up," he said.

" Yeah, okay," she hung up, and he let out a sigh. What did I just do? he asks himself, exasperated.

He fixed himself a drink, not minding the fact that it was too early in the day; he just really wanted to forget. He knew he did the right thing, though that didn't stop him from feeling terrible.

He dressed up and went to his office, ready to drown himself in a shitload of work.

Stephanie's POV

She has been restless since the phone call several hours ago. What did he want to say? What if he withdrew his offer? He was her last hope at this point. She needed to calm her nerves. She made herself a cup of chamomile tea; it always made her calm.

Although it didn't completely take away her anxiety, she felt way better.

She checked the time and saw that it was 1:37 already. Alexander could be here any minute. She checked through her wardrobe and decided on a nice pair of jeans with a casual shirt. She applied her gloss and was about to apply mascara before she stopped herself; she can't remember the last time she applied it. She didn't know why she wanted to impress him.

She wore her sneakers, unplugged her phone, and waited while she heard her doorbell ring. It made her jump, and then she breathed in. Here goes nothing.

She opened her door to see a handsome, as ever, Alexander standing at her doorway.

"Hey," she breathed out.

"Hi," he answered back. They stayed at the door, staring at themselves for a bit before he asked, "Are you ready to go?"

"Um, yeah, sorry. Let me just get my bag," which she did before she came back out, locked her door, and turned to face him.

"Okay, let's go," she said, looking up at him.

He guided her to his car and opened the door for her. She entered. He went to the driver's side, made himself comfortable, and then let out a breath of air. Which made her wonder just a little bit if he was as nervous as she was.
