Chapter 13 - A Father’s Decision

The sun was setting over the Briston Estate, casting a warm, golden glow across the grounds as Khione walked through the corridors. She had just returned from the port, where she had bid farewell to Lady Seraphine. The memory of their parting lingered in her mind, but now, her thoughts turned to the recent council meeting and the impending threat from the Lyrion Empire. She needed guidance and knew exactly where to find it.

She found her father, Duke Briston, in his study. The room was filled with books and maps, evidence of his dedication to both knowledge and strategy. He looked up from a scroll as Khione entered, a warm smile spreading across his face.

"Khione, my dear, come in," he said, gesturing for her to sit. "What brings you here at this hour?"

Khione took a seat across from him, her expression serious. "Father, I need to talk to you about the war with the Lyrion Empire. The council meeting today… it's clear that conflict is inevitable. I want to know if I'll be participating."

Duke Briston's smile faded slightly, replaced by a look of concern. "I had a feeling this conversation was coming. You're eager to protect our empire, and I'm proud of your courage. But, Khione, you're still young."

"I'm sixteen," Khione argued, her voice firm. "I've trained hard, and I'm capable. I want to do my part."

Her father sighed, leaning back in his chair. "I understand your determination, but war is not something to rush into. It's not just about strength and skill; it's about experience and wisdom. You have much to learn."

Khione clenched her fists in frustration. "Then when, Father? When can I prove myself?"

Duke Briston's gaze softened. "You will have your chance, but not now. Before you join the military, there is something essential you must do. You must attend the Asterios Imperial Academy. It's a tradition in our family and a critical part of your education."

Khione's eyes widened. "The Asterios Imperial Academy?"

"Yes," her father confirmed. "There, you will learn more about your magic, how to wield your polearm with greater skill, and understand military strategy and other invaluable subjects. The academy will prepare you for the responsibilities that lie ahead."

Khione's mind raced. She had heard stories about the academy—the rigorous training, the renowned instructors, and the powerful connections forged there. It was a place where the empire's future leaders were made.

"But I thought I was to join the military directly after my training here," she said, her voice tinged with confusion.

Duke Briston shook his head. "That was never the plan, Khione. We always intended for you to attend the academy first. It's essential for your growth, not just as a warrior, but as a leader."

Khione took a deep breath, trying to reconcile her eagerness to fight with the wisdom of her father's words. "When will I begin my attendance?"

"After your upcoming seventeenth birthday," her father replied. "You have a few more months to continue your training here. Use this time to hone your skills and prepare yourself mentally for the challenges ahead."

Khione nodded slowly, understanding the importance of what her father was saying. "I see. I'll do as you ask, Father. I'll attend the academy and learn all I can."

Duke Briston smiled, pride evident in his eyes. "Good. You have a bright future ahead of you, Khione. And when the time comes, you will be ready to serve our empire with honor and distinction."

Khione rose from her seat, feeling a mix of relief and anticipation. "Thank you, Father. I won't let you down."

"I know you won't," he said, standing up to embrace her. "You are a Briston, and you carry the strength and wisdom of our lineage. Trust in yourself and in the path laid out for you."
